Cartoon Network's Cartoon Cartoons Appreciation Thread

I know there was a thread started about Courage the Cowerdly Dog, but I thought I’d start one about all the Cartoon Cartoons (my favorite being The Power Puff Girls).

First of all, I was wondering if anyone else out there loves Ed, Edd, and Eddie? Months ago, I remember reading someone’s dislike for this cartoon. I used to dislike it, back when it first came on, but I like it now. I especially love Edd, the way he’s so neat and proper. And the way his parents Yellow Sticky everything for him is funny.

Also, what do you all think of the new ones they have? Time Squad, Grim and Evil to name a couple…

I’ll stop there, knowing that others will chime in with their cartoon they love, but I do have one question: Whatever happened to Cow and Chicken?

Good choice, the PPG are my faves too, but I also have a special feeling for Dexter’s Laboratory. They should start showing new episodes of it again. I like the one where Dexter switches his mom’s body with his sister’s because of his “bad grade.” And the Speed Racer parody, and the one where Deedee and Dexer’s cereal prizes get switched. And when Deedee explores Cousie’s world. Great show, that, and I know Cragi McCracken, who created the PPG, worked for Dexter’s Lab.

As for the Powerpuff Girls- Super Zeroes, Buttercrush (hey I thought Ace was pretty cute, too), Telephonies, The Bare Facts, and Octi-Evil all were great.

I watched this other cartoon, “The Kids Next Door” about these kids trying to break into the pool during adult swim. Only saw it once, but it wasn’t half bad.

Spongebob Squarepants. I love that guy.

Dexter’s Lab is a great show as well. I happen to like all Cartoon Cartoons, which is why I didn’t name all my favorites.

monster, IIRC, Sponge Bob Squarepants is on Nickolodeon. Or is it on another channel?

BTW, thanks Ukulele Ike for editing my post.

You’re correct. My mistake.

But I STILL love that guy.

I am another admirer of both Powerpuff Girls and Dexter’s Lab. However, both of them fall far beneath the Justice Friends shorts they show on Dexter sometimes. That’s the funnest thing I’ve seen in quite some time, and I really want to see a whole cartoon made of it.

Who else wants to see a Dexter/Powerpuff Girls crossover? Can you imagine what would happen if Bubbles and Deedee got together?

I would love a PPG- Dexter crossover. Deedee and Bubbles would make quite the pair. I also love how they both watch TV Puppet Pals. Did you notice how in one episode of PPG, when the kids are all napping, Dexter is curled up sleeping too? I think that’s the one where the girls are framed, but I’m not sure. And I think I remember seeing a toy doll of Deedee in the “Ploys R Us” episode.

A Justice Friends spin off is in order, ultrafilter.
Hehe. “Teddy scared.” “Well Teddy doesn’t pay the rent!” And the episode where Major Glory is worried about his Uncle Sam coming to visit. Great show, that.

I saw the greatest episode of Justice Friends tonight! Krunk wanted to watch TV Puppet Pals, but Major Glory and ValHallen broke the TV, so Krunk made them act it out. It was hilarious!

I have an unnatural fondness for PPG, 3E (Ed, Edd & Eddie), Courage (and Muriel, and especially Muriel’s psychotic barber nephew, Fred), and Dexter. I haven’t really got into Time Squad, and although I loved the pilot for Grim I haven’t seen any of the episodes now that it’s joined the lineup.

Sadly, Sheep in the Big City seems to have bombed. I quite liked it (and in fact named myself for it), but I guess it never developed much of a following - its humor was probably a bit too adult for its time slot. (And I don’t mean “adult” as it “Nasty Sluts Now!” I mean adult as in many-layers-of-meaning.)

What do folks think of Samurai Jack? I’m not sure if it’s being marketed as a “Cartoon Cartoon,” but since it meets the literal term (Cartoon Network-produced Cartoons) I’m including it. Their scheduling hasn’t been convenient for me and I’m afraid of my VCR (it does bad things), so I haven’t yet watched it. Visually it looks like a total treat, but do the scripts work? (And if you’re wondering why there are no new Dexters, look no further - SJ’s producer and creator in Genndy Tartakovsky, previously of Dexter fame.)

Oh, and Cow & Chicken, my introduction to CN, has been relegated to the after-school slot, along with its sibling IM Weasel - I imagine they might return to evenings at some point. Johnny Bravo seems to be suffering the same fate, which bothers me less - I’ve always thought the concept was a bit more interesting than the execution, Brenda Vaccaro notwithstanding.

Sheep in the Big City is cool. I like the episode where he finally catches Sheep (Sheep gets away eventually) and Sheep is strapped to a dolly with a face cover ala Hannibal Lecter. I also like the Clearance Day! episode. I was chanting the little Clearance Day song for days.

It’s too bad that Cow and Chicken was moved. For some reason, I never liked IM Weasel. Johnny Bravo is still hanging on, he had hosting duties a few weeks ago. Personally, I feel that Scooby Doo should be moved from the Primetime slot into the afternoon, and therefore Cow and Chicken could be bumped up. No offense, but Scooby Doo is on every five hours, it seems. I am one person who is not a Scooby Doo fan, obviously.

I loved the Johnny Bravo and Scooby Doo cross over. I especially liked the scene where Velma and Johnny both lose their glasses.

Velma: “Oh no! I can’t see without my glasses!”

Johnny: “Oh no! I can’t be seen without my glasses!”

Or something like that.

I love Ed, Edd and Eddy. The way they react to each other and Ed’s fascination with chickens and really bad horror movies is hilarious.

The new Adult Swim is the funniest thing I ever seen lately. Sealab 2021 is balls out funnier than anything on right now. I only wish they showed more of Harvey Birdman (the was the Quests were skerwered had me rolling).

Also, have you seen the shorties? They are made by other people and are small revisions of classic characters in music videos. The JabberJaw one was ultra cool, as was the Johnny Quest board game.

According to the IDMB there is an episode of Dexter’s Lab which is unsuitable for the kids. It’s called “Dexter’s Rude Removal” and has been circulated places, like conventions, but never aired on TV. Has anyone seen this episode and if so, would they enlighten me a bit? I’m very intruiged. I know they have shown Dexter in the nude in a previous episode, the one where he and Deedee change rooms. Is this a very racy episode?

I just realized something. I love saying and typing Deedee’s name. It’s just so fun!

Zoggie I have not seen that episode either, but AFAIK the missing episode is really an in-house only short:

The Powerpuff Girls is my favorite Cartoon Cartoon.

I saw the pilot episode of Samurai Jack twice. It’s much more intense than the other Cartoon Cartoons, which is probably why it was given the Monday timeslot. I’m not much of an anime fan, so I can’t talk about SJ from that standpoint, but I was very impressed with it. The visuals and the animation were unlike anything I have known Cartoon Network to produce–sharp edges (but no black outlines), fast yet smooth motion, incredible detail. The storyline is powerful enough to ‘work’ with the animation. It’s a great cartoon.

Besides Sheep in the Big City–which I also enjoyed–were there any other Cartoon Cartoons that “bombed” soon after their debut? I think that Mike, Lu, and Og might fit into this category, but I can’t remember any others.

I used to like Johnny Bravo, but it seems that the whole style of the show has changed. Most noticable to me is the animation–the lines of the characters seem a bit thicker and more rounded, and Johnny’s movements aren’t as sudden and jerky as they used to be.

Dexter’s Laboratory is some of the funniest cartoon material I’ve seen in a LONG time. Between Dexter/DeeDee and the Justice Friends, that show usually has me rolling. (Especially the episode where Dexter travels to Japan as an exchange student and finds that all the Japanese students have bigger and cooler robots than he does… Fantastic stuff!)

I’m not as big a fan of Powerpuff Girls, but in all fairness I haven’t watched it much. But Johnny Bravo, albeit not up the the par that DL sets, is still hysterical.

Courage is unquestionably my favorite, but I watch several of the others intermittently. I’m hooked on Samurai Jack now–the animation is very interesting, edgy without being annoying, and the storyline is epic (as Phoenix has already noted). Also, I’m a sucker for a good, over-the-top villain like Aku.

As for Sheep, I always liked the Ranting Swede bits at the end best, although the whole show was amusing. I’m collecting the episodes via TiVo to make a “Best of the Ranting Swede” tape–I work for a Swedish company, and I’m considering looping it on one of the TVCRs here when April first rolls around again.

“Ya knaow vaht really staheams mhy lutefisk?!”

Anybody else remember the first time we saw Dexter’s Laboratory on the Space Ghost Coast to Coast show? It was part of this competition and I just fell in love. This guy Genndy is so creative. Yes the Speedracer ep. The newspaper ninjas, foreign exchange boys, Monkey! Monkey! The opera ep. And my personal fav. ?“No not Justice fruit pies the sweet snack you’d have to be crazy to hate! Oh I give up!”? Everyone who’s read comics back in the day must have been rolling when they saw that, I was.

He also does the Powerpuff Girls which is NOT my favorite but still has some really smart episodes where they play with cartoon conventions. I think the closest they came to a cross over was when Bubbles wanted to bring over Koosy but was outvoted.

Mike, Lu and Og has an awesome theme music. I’m thinking about making it my wake-up call in the morning. And I enjoy watching it.

Ed, Edd and Eddy has had some awesome scripts lately. When the Ed boys make a city and everybody changes. Plank is without-a-doubt one of the funniest characters ever. And the Canker sisters. Ooh it’s on right now! I also like there theme music.

Most of the rest I just don’t get. They kinda feel like Looney Tunes circa 1965. They just rub me the wrong way. But to each his own. Sheep in the Big City and {b]Courage** are smart but I just don’t connect with it.

Samurai Jack isn’t really cartoon cartoon but it is a Genndy creation and is just brilliant and I loved every moment except for one. When Jack put his oil dripping sword back in it’s scabbard without cleaning it I jumped up and yelled NOOOOO!!! Stupid!! That’s rule #1 when you have a sword, you do NOT do that, even if it is magic. Ever! Oh, and who couldn’t love a villian who names a drink after himself “Drink Aku!”

Curiously, the blonde Canker sister bears a strong resemblance to one of my ex-girlfriends.

Cartoon Network’s originals have single-handedly revived American animation from the embarrasing state it sank to during the darkest days of Hanna-Barbera. It’s a grand sight to see. Samurai Jack is a work of art, and pretty much everything else they make is good in its own right.

…except for Cow & Chicken…this, I cannot stand. Only two things on Cartoon Network invoke a spasm in me towards the remote when they come on: Scooby Doo and Cow & Chicken. They show both of them way too darn much (but at least the latter is now relegated to a timeslot during which I don’t have the TV on)
