Castle - Nathon Fillion vehicle

Did anyone catch last Monday’s episode? I thought it was one of the best yet–an interesting case with unexpected (but not overtly stupid) twists and turns, some great casual banter between our two leads, and a heartfelt, well-handled B-plot w/his daughter. I like how the rollout of the book is going to be a larger arc for the season, and Beckett’s “date” with Castle was irresistable. And while I don’t want him to become a regular, it couldn’t hurt to have CIA-guy back one day.

I watched it. CIA-guy struck me as a competent version of Col Flagg from MAS*H. I hope he comes back sometime too.

I thought it was excellent. The B plot was handled a little oddly (I thought Castle’s attitude to the violin teacher and his family’s reaction to him were not quite believable) but the final scene was touching. I really like seeing Castle grow into being a considerate person.

I also noticed, happily, that it’s the first episode in which Castle does not get some kind of hint from his family that turns the case. The bit about him recognizing his fatherly overprotectiveness and thus going to Mr. Finnegan almost counts, but at least it wasn’t some contrivance coming out of Alexis’s mouth. I love the characters, but I’m getting a little tired of that formulaic touch.

The initial scene with the murder video was beautiful. Castle said it. “That was awesome! I mean, it was horrible, but!”

Good episode, but I thought the part with the daughter was a little odd. I did not think Castle was so out of line about wanting to check the music teacher’s references. I don’t think that was so flip-out worthy.

Also, Kate sets aside the whole night to read Castle’s book (with wine and a bubble bath no less) but does not make it to page 105?

Apparently there was a Firefly reference in the latest ep. I missed it, did anyone catch it and/or is able to explain it?

Well, Fillion’s Twitter has a new update pointing out that it was the “two by two, hands of blue” ref, but I have to admit that went by really fast and subtly. About 6 minutes in while Castle and Beckett are walking along, Castle’s playing with the blue gloves on his hands and very briefly makes the V sign with both hands. Two by two, hands of blue. I’d be amazed if anyone actually caught it when they weren’t looking for it.
He’s wearing blue gloves, and at one point makes the gesture ‘two’ with each of his hands.

Two by two
Hands of blue
I’m a pretty big *Firefly *fan and I missed that completely. Interesting that he did it on purpose.

I think the show keeps getting better and better. The characters are comfortably settling into their groove and losing much of the “over the top” aspects that were a bit, well, over the top.

For example, the character of Castle’s mother is not as shrill or wild as she appeared early on.

And Castle’s glib manner is more subdued.

I really enjoyed this episode. And not just because in real life my son was on a webcast to schoolchildren from Antarctica this past winter – but the parallel scene sure didn’t hurt my enjoyment.

Maybe she’s like me. Every once in a while I get the idea that it would be nice to soak in the tub and read a book.

I get all settled in and about 3 minutes later I realize that

A) It’s not really a very comfortable way to read a book (especially a big one); and
B) I’m about to drowse off and will drop the book in the tub.

So after 8 minutes I’m back out of the tub.

I’ve seen the book in public, I’m surprised to discover it even has a page 105. That is one slim volume.

Be amazed. My husband caught it and said “hands of blue!” but I would have missed it if he didn’t spot it.

Thus, am I amazed.

I saw the blue hands, but I totally missed the “two by two” part.

Oh, and I bought Heat Wave for my Kindle, because it’s not quite full price. It’s cute. It’s by no means high literature, but it actually does sound as if it were written by Castle, and it’s a fun read.

Of course, because I’m reading it as an e-book, I don’t have page numbers, but I’m waiting eagerly for 105.

Okay, I’ll admit that I bought a copy of Heat Wave. I was curious, and I had a 40% off coupon, plus another coupon for $5 off as well. I agree with your assessment of it. And I just looked up page 105 (I meant to do it earlier after seeing the show Monday night), and sure enough, the bedroom scene (I hope that’s not too much of a spoiler) begins on page 105, which is the first page of Chapter 10.

Totally coincidental sighting: in the TV show “Flashforward” everyone went unconscious for a couple of minutes, during which they saw a point six months in the future. The lead guy, an FBI agent, saw this big bulletin board with notes and pictures and all in his office. During the ‘fill in newbie’ recap of this week’s episode they showed him tracing along a connection line on that board to a card that reads “Mosaic” (which is the name of the FBI project) and then apart from that it reads “Blue hands.”
Hmmmmm.

Just for fun I Hulu’d the episode and grabbed a screen print of the flash: Two by Two Hands of Blue

This was imo the best episode of the entire series. I loved Castle “That’s amazing!.. Ehm and very sad of course.” “Best case ever.”

I agree with Castle (and others here) that was the best case ever.

A very fun episode - I hope the season keeps up this quality. I’m only sorry that I haven’t seen Firefly, so I can’t watch for the references like some of you guys - that is a lot of fun too!

As far as I can tell, that’s been the only one so far. Castle isn’t a Joss Whedon show, so I wouldn’t expect too many references. I swear it feels like a Whedon show, though, with the snappy writing and of course Fillion.
