Castle - Nathon Fillion vehicle

I only saw about half the Firefly episodes when they were aired, and haven’t seen the movie Serenity.

But after this Castle episode with the Firefly insiders recognizing the blue hands reference, I went out this weekend and bought the Firefly series on DVD. I’ve only watched the first episode so far, yet I’m already reminded how much I really enjoy the witty and creative writing on both shows.

And Fillion has this quality of having his characters show their “heart of gold” even while being a jerk (often on Castle) or a hard-ass (usually on Firefly).

I still wish more people were watching.

The highlight of this week’s episode was in the preview for next week’s Halloween episode. The preview showed:

Castle in what is OBVIOUSLY a Captain Tightpants costume, long-barreled pistol and brown coat and all!

Well, so far, the tie-in Castle book is getting a big thumbs up from fans.

I’ll likely buy it eventually. I think it is a fun tie-in.

What’s funny is Captain Hammer in Dr. Horrible is the inverse: a heart of dickishness wrapped in a cuddly exterior.

I’ve never seen these. Are they still available to view online?

Right here! (Free with a few commercials.)

–Plus a preview of the Castle Halloween episode here.

Thanks Bridget!!

Everyone remembering to watch this tonight? Told all your friends to watch? This episode has the potential to bump the ratings up a bit with all the Firefly buzz… I hope it does.

In addition to the obvious Firefly reference there’s something from the set of Firefly that Nathan Fillion has placed on the set of Castle somewhere that I think we may see tonight.

Firefly fans may also be interested to know that next week’s episode was written by Jose Molina who wrote the Firefly episode Ariel and co-wrote Trash as well as being Story Editor for the whole series.

Seriously? Awesome. If Whedon didn’t actually work on this show, then its creators are definitely fans.

Has anybody found some good frame grabs? Like whether Castle had the actual gun that Malcolm used?

The banter with his daughter over the Captain Tightpants outfit was hilarious. I damn near fell out of my chair.

I don’t have screenshots, but both Firefly and Castle are on Hulu, so I looked back and forth. If it’s not the actual prop, it’s damn close. I think the rest of the costume may be an imitation, though, the coat doesn’t look quite right. Honestly though, I wouldn’t be surprised if Fillion managed to get the original costume and gun.

Silly people… he is merely dressing up as a “Space Cowboy”.

But didn’t he wear that costume, like, five years ago?

Fillion is a huge Firefly nerd. Several cast members have confirmed that he kept tons of costumes and props. Jewel Staite said that she’s been to his house on numerous occasions where he dressed up in the costume. Of course, she also said that she caught him in one of Morena Baccarin’s gowns…

It’s the original costume. It’s probably been, er, let out a bit since then.

Well, they do call him “Captain Tightpants”…

And here I thought this xkcd plot (that strip and the next 4) were total exaggerations.

Right, but there needs to be a boundary between that and “Captain Muffintop”.

Well last night’s episode isn’t going to win any awards.

Lamest attempt to pass off an implausibly obvious setup as surprising ever? The Castle/daughter stuff was pretty lame to boot.
