Casual Subjects for Cafe Society (CS4CS)

This is an experimental thread that’s similar to “Mini-Rants” for the BBQ Pit. It’s for little random comments or observations you want to make on topics relevant to Cafe Society, but for which there’s not currently a thread open and it’s really not worth starting a thread to discuss as there’s probably not enough interest (e.g. “Damn but Ville Valo is sexy as hell” or “I think *Porkys III was the greatest film of all time and here’s why”).

I’ll make a post below in order to leave this as the instructional O.P… You can either comment on that post, or make a “mini-post” of your own about something that’s also "probably not worth a whole thread but is worth a post.

The trailer for Mike Myers’ The Love Guru just looks absolutely horrible. There’s nothing that funny except for the parts that are recycled from Austin Powers (e.g. the “moley moley moley” obsession only this time with the word ‘midget’ for a character played by Verne “Mini-Me” Troyer). I think Mike has gone to the well once (or actually two or three times) too often, and this one just seems to recast Austin Powers with an Indian theme. I’m hoping it’s not successful or there’ll be Love Guru sequels in which Myers plays the love guru’s televangelist and archbishop doppelgangers; Mike’s a funny guy but he just isn’t Peter Sellers.

OTOH, for those interested, you do get to see Justin Timberlake in bikini briefs.

There’s this book I’ve been dying to read called “Casseroles for the Dead”*, but I guess it hasn’t come out yet. I keep on looking in the bookstores. If anyone knows where I can buy a copy, I’m really looking forward to getting one!

*working title, possibly wrong, but I’d recognize the author’s name.

My husband picked up the DVD for No Country for Old Men. I’m looking forward to watching it.

May looks like the best month in a while for new releases.

I’ll just add that I happened to see Mike Myers in a Starbucks perhaps a month ago (maybe longer). He was an asshole to the counter-person, dragged his girlfriend (the poor girl who was with him at any rate) around like an errant dog, and snarled at some poor shmuck kid who had the gonads to say “Wow! You’re Mike Myers.”

Aww, give the poor guy some slack, he hadn’t had his coffee yet!!

Nice idea for a thread Sampiro! This is the kind of thread idea I will think of in the middle of the night then forget by the time I wake up in the morning and sit down at the computer.

*** I’m waiting on pins and needles for the new Battlestar Galactica episodes!! It’s bittersweet though because this is the last season. I can’t wait to see what they come up with for the series ending.

I wish I had gone to an anime high school.

Great idea, Sampiro!

This is gonna be one of my all-time favorite movies. I watched it twice over the weekend and then loaned it to my daughter or I’d be watching it again.

On another note, I’m hoping TCM will adjust its schedule and show some Richard Widmark movies soon – they often do that when a major star passes on.

Yay! They’ve done it: TCM Remembers Richard Widmark (1914-2008).

I just spent about 40 bucks and I’m getting a big box of new books from Amazon.com AND I had a free shipping coupon that worked.

I went to my favorite genre: Sci fi then requested the list be shown price lowest to highest. I found hundreds of books for under $10 - there are repeats/different editions but so what! I’m getting about 12 books, some hardcover. Yay!

I picked up the latest book by Sara Paretsky recently. Bleeding Kansas.

I almost didn’t read it when I realized it wasn’t a V. I. Warshawski mystery.

I’m really not sure I like it–give me escapist fluff anyday–this is kinda unrealistic in an all too real way.

I’m just now working my way through the first couple of seasons of Battlestar Galactica. I’ve hit a few clunkers, but overall it’s a great show. I love the look of the sets. The mix of sci-fi and old technology (corded phones, etc) is a stroke of brilliance.

I want to see John C. Reilly in more movies.

I still miss Bob Edwards

Oh, and I’m reading Wicked, pushed on me by my daughter. I think I’m getting more out of it because, unlike Ivygirl, I have read all of the Oz books written by L. Frank Baum, so when they talk about Lurline and Tiktokism and Ozma Tippetarius, I have a reference she does not.

I initially began watching the show at the start of it’s third season; liked it, but it was much to complicated by that point for me to just easily jump in & start watching it. So, I’ve gone back and watched it from the beginning, am a little over halfway through the second seasons. Watched “Downloaded” last night, which disappointed me as it seems to retcon ‘Number Six’ in a way I don’t like.

BTW, I don’t want a specific spoiler, but does it ever get explained why Baltar has visions of Six in his head, since it’s been revealed he doesn’t have a micro-implant in his brain?

Dunno. I think you’re a couple episodes ahead of me. We just finished the two-parter “Home” last night. I didn’t care for that installment, but I’m looking forward to continuing.

Nope it’s never fully explained. Hope they are able to tie up loose ends in this last season, but they like to keep us guessing!

I rented The Vicar of Dibley on DVD from the library and found that on one of the discs there is a special feature with Johnny Depp! Mmmm, Johnny Depp…

I’m dying from lack of new House episodes! And does anyone know when So You Think You Can Dance will be back on?

Hey, I get to mini-rant and mini-CS in the same post!

A hearty eff-you to (in order) CBS, Comcast, and the NCAA – the three parties who conspired to make sure that I missed Dexter this week.

After watching Idol lats night, my wife and went to fire up this week’s DVR’d episode, only to find Cold Case, the show that runs before Dexter. It would seem that NCAA basketball ran long, so CBS bumped the show back.

Screw CBS for not scheduling filler material when they know the tourney would bump shows back.
Screw CBS and Comcast for not having a system in place that would inform the DVR box that this is the case.
Screw CBS for not rebroadcasting it another night this week at 3am or something like NBC does with many of their shows.
Screw either CBS or Comcast, whichever one is responsible for not having the show available on the On Demand channel.
Screw cbs.com for not having the full episode available online.

Hey CBS, this isn’t your normal series. If I miss an episode of Without A Trace, then yes, there will be one or two running plot points I’ll miss out on. But if you want to import a series like this – in which missing a single episode will completely skew my viewing experience – then do me a favor and don’t even fricking start showing them in the first place.
