Then he said he never said “never”. Period. Full stop.
Not really. It’s the actual “Dio Show” he gets off on. Notice how he keeps popping in here with a typical one line “show” post. He’s trying desperately to get one going, but in this thread, he’s being largely ignored, so he waits a while and does it again.
He’s hoping to start another one, so he can get off, because the way the thread is currently going just isn’t doing it for him.
This is a total mischaracterizatiom of what happened. I pointed out that something you posted contradicted other stuff you had posted. I didn’t know you, but we had several other posters caught posting bullshit stories before. And FYI, I didn’t play detective. A couple of other people PM’ed me with the info and asked me to post it. I didn’t “decide you were lying.” I asked (at the private request of other posters) why you had posted contradictory accounts of your childhood. I also accepted your answer and didn’t argue with you about it and have never questioned you since.
One more time, I did it because others asked me to do it, not because I did any investigating on my own.
This trope that I get off on any of this or ever consciously seek this kind of attention could not be more wrong. I find it bothersome and distressing and it ruins my day. This is also a perfect example of people posting unsupported opinions as fact. You don’t know what I think or feel, and I would appreciate if people didn’t make factual declarations about what I think or feel.
So if you find it bothersome and distressing to get the attention, and we find it bothersome and distressing in the small percentage of cases where you attract the attention by your behavior…perhaps consider modifying your behavior?
There is nothing wrong with my behavior. I just have some strong opinions. I’m not going to change them to make people like me, but it’s also never my intention to get anything going. If anything I may posts a little more stidently when going against the group think just out of annoyance.
Ya know…
Most people tend to avoid doing shit that ruins their day. Perhaps you should quit cranking up Dio shows on a regular basis if it bothers you so much. I know this whole cause and effect thing is complicated but I think you might be smart enough to figure it out.
If I tried to do a parody version of a stereotypical “Dio Show” post, I couldn’t do better than Dio’s last series of posts in this thread.
Clearly and plainly incorrect to anyone with at least a nanogram of self-reflection.
Does it give you any pause whatsoever, any moments of introspection, to see that nearly every single person on this board - including from people who often share the same political opinions as you - thinks this about you?
How do you convince yourself that the entire world is wrong, and you’re right?
I don’t have a problem with Dio, but then I’m not usually one to participate in lengthy debates/arguments on here. I actually find him kinda entertaining, and the way he gets everyone’s panties in a twist is so predictable, it gives me a laugh.
.
And I’ll never forget when people were arguing about the writer’s strike and he wrote a pretty impressive episode of House. I can’t remember what everyone said about it, but knowing how the majority feels about him, they must have hated having to admit he did a pretty good job.
Chimera speaks the truth.
Nonsense. People acknowledged that he did a pretty good job for an amateur for an amateur who knew nothing about TV script writing. This surprised nobody. IT was alsoultimately meaningless , since that challenge came in the wake of Dio’s claim about how easily replaceable TV writers must surely be. (There was also a more-than-passing claim on his part to be able to “piss out” a decent script, thus implying far more than just being “pretty good for an amateur.”)
No one’s asking you to change your opinions, just to slow down for five minutes and post a few decent posts rather than a series of repetitive rapid-fire assertions. It’s not your content that starts these pittings, it’s your specific style in a very few cases.
I’ve been guilty of this more than I care to admit even to myself, but there it is. We all do it to some degree and more often at some times than other. The idea that someone we dislike is ALL EVIL.
Of course he’s not all bad. We don’t think he’s Evil in every aspect of his life, completely incompetent, worth only contempt. No one is. So the whole amateur script thing is a red herring. The point is that his behavior is not normal, it is not socially acceptable, and we (meaning not all but a great many of us) would like him to recognize that it is disruptive and that he needs to do something about it.
Unfortunately, the reaction we just got is “I’m not doing anything wrong”.
Yes, yes you are. I keep telling you what it is, others put it in their own words. It doesn’t make you a bad person, it just makes you extremely frustrating to deal with and disrupts our ability to converse with you and, more importantly, with other people.
Dio, I hereby suggest that you take a long sabbatical from this board, in all seriousness, and not necessarily because I feel that we need a break from you. I just checked your posting times from the last 24 hours, and I counted 40 posts from yesterday midnight, only interrupted by what I would assume was you sleeping, and a 6 hour bloc from mid-afternoon to mid-evening which I assume is your job. Heck at this point I probably need to follow my own advice (I need to start exercising, something I’ve been putting off for far too long, even tho I’m only 25 lbs. over my target weight), but you are clearly addicted to this place, and need to quit cold turkey. Go take your wife for a long romantic weekend somewhere, a long bicycle ride of quiet contemplation, anything but sitting in your chair typing out your little missives. This place ain’t worth it frankly.
I am going to post my pet theory about (one of the reasons) Dio bothers so many people on this board. In every other forum on the Internet, it’s considered typical for posters to loudly spout their opinions and basically engage in shouting matches until one side gives up. But the Dope is about fighting ignorance. One thing I admired about this board when I first lurked is that if one poster provided a cite proving another poster wrong, the second poster would accept the correction with grace and say, “Ignorance fought.” That is the culture of this board: you provide evidence for your assertions and you are open to learning about new evidence. It’s the scientific mindset.
My first encounter with Dio, I noticed that he had used some education terminology incorrectly. I provided him a cite showing him the correct usage, but he just responded, “Well, I worked in special education, so I know better.” I provided another cite, and another, and he just kept repeating the same old, “I worked in special education.” I could have engaged him in a dick-measuring contest with my own special education credentials, but I am aware that “My post is my cite” is not a valid debating technique.
The point is, I came to realize that Dio is not a typical Dope poster. He will never back down or allow himself to be wrong, not matter how much evidence you show him. The only solution for it, to use some behaviorist terminology, is extinction: total ignoring. Of course new posters will stumble into his trap like I did, not knowing what he is like, but the reinforcement he gets from headbutting against regular posters will be greatly reduced.
That’s exactly why the moderators need to stop giving Diogenes a free pass. Ignoring the guy would be a good idea in principle, but it would never work as a practical solution.
It’s time for the mods to start holding the guy to the same standard as everyone else.
That’s a good point, Pyper. I think one of the worst insults on this board (other than cunt, of course  ) is to call someone a dishonest debater.
Why didn’t you tell those posters to post the info themselves? Why did they need you to be their hitman?
