Catch-All Dio Pitting

Yeah, but you’re just as much of a tool when discussing whether or not a person can be injured by having a sharp stick jammed in their neck.
(Oooh, aah, the thread started with a discussion about pepper spray and a kid. Therefore, due to hot button overflow, all topics on the thread, even one which are tangential and normally open to fact and citation are now only amenable to Dio’s unsupported opinion. In distinction to the other thread, this is specifically a point about you.)

Just the opposite is true, actually. It was supposed to be taken as settled fact that the kid had a “deadly weapon,” and that the cops were in mortal danger. Any skepticism or deviation from that dogma was unacceptable.

I have zero respect for people who don’t have the stones to present and defend their own opinion. If they’re that worried about getting jerked around, they should be worried enough to bring up the subject. If they’re not that worried, they can sit and stew on it.

It just makes me think of a bunch of junior high school boys standing in a corner poking one of their friends in the arm saying “Go ask Susan if she’ll go to the dance with Jeff!” I’d be the one in Susan’s posse asking “why doesn’t Jeff grow a pair and ask her himself?”

I have been the one to voice a dissenting opinion on a message board and my reputation took a big hit for it (it was a board about koi and goldfish care, fer Christ’s sake) but I knew full well I was going to take heat for it and never regretted it.

The PM’s I got later about “I felt the same but didn’t want to be the bad guy” were kinda less than comforting

I like what **Nzinga Seated **said about “silent support being no support at all”

For the record, it’s not like I haven’t been challenged on the Bible stuff, and haven’t stood up to it.

Ha, fair enough.

Personally, I think there are two things going on here. One, Dio is an obnoxious ass who tends to derail threads with his posting style.

Two, some people are very gleeful about the prospect of having a target of harassment, and will bring up “Dio Show!!” even when inappropriate.

Both things, IMO, are obnoxious. I mean, the guy clearly bugs me, but I don’t engage him anymore. I’m discussing him here, but I feel like that’s appropriate because it’s a Pit thread specifically about him.

The thing is, even though the people who are somewhat stalkerish with the “Dio Show” stuff are being annoying about it, and contributing somewhat to thread derailment, they’re not creating the problem in the first place. I really feel like Dio’s behavior hasn’t changed that much, at least not in the past few years. I get the sense that people are on him about it more these days not because he’s gotten worse, but because a lot of people have realized, oh OK, it’s not that he’s not aware of the problem, or that it’s a temporary thing caused by stuff going on his life or whatever: This is permanent, and he doesn’t give a shit, and he’s not going to change. Some people react to this by just disengaging completely, and some people are following him around yelling “Dio Show!” a lot, and I’d guess the vast majority of people won’t really be aware of the issue at all until they run into Dio in one of his pet-issue threads. Categories 2 and 3 are why this will continue to be a problem as long as he continues posting in this fashion, and even if category 2 went away, you’d still have 3, which is pretty sizable.

And I would just like to say that it is really rare for me to run into someone online that I simply will not have conversations with. I’ll get into arguments and debates with anyone. I love that shit. Conservatives, liberals, Flat-Earthers, anti-vax nutters, whatever. Bring it on. But trying to have a conversation with Diogenes is like talking to some kind of robot that is programmed specifically to piss people off. I can’t deal with that.

Diogenes is a polarizing figure. You, on the other hand, are universally despised.

Odd choice of words for a non-victim.

Let me do what I can to allay your fears. It may be many years ago now but I did intensive studies on early Christianity, heresies, the Clementine literature, the Ante-Nicene Fathers, etc and I’m here to tell you, in these and other Bible-related areas Diogenes knows whereof he speaks.

Has anyone called him “Doggy Knees” yet? I like that one, makes him sound like a cute, widdle, rabid puppy dog.

I lurked during most of the pay-to-post years, and I remember one thread from several years ago (can’t find it through search) where the OP was grieving because his wife had miscarried, and Dio came in with something along the lines of “it wasn’t really a child at that point, and saying you lost a child is insulting to everyone who has.”

So I personally had him pegged as Someone to Watch Out For since before I started posting.

I tend to avoid threads where he gets on his high horse because I know I’ll never change his mind and the “oh, no, the Dio show ” that accompany it is just as annoying to me as anything Dio comes up with.

Unfortunately I waded into this thread because the “get someone else to post so I don’t take the heat” is one of my biggest pet peeves.

For the sake of the board, which I do care about, I will make an effort to be more thoughtful about how I say what I say instead of just popping off. I know I’m hyperbolic. In real life the bombast comes off as less literal amd serious than it does in pure text. I have a tendency to feel that I know I’m right, that my point is reasonable or that I at least have a right to my opinion, so what are they getting so upset about, but I will hereby resolve to take some time before I wade into controversial topics and really think through what I say and how I say it, because I think I do have reasonable points underneath the bombast if I will just get out ofmy own way.

Not that I would expect anyone to notice, but I’ve already backed way off on some topics because I have, I admit it, been exposed as blowing hard sometimes without really knowing what I was talking about. For instance, I got really tired of having my ass kicked by Bricker and have been very careful lately about what I say in legal threads.

I think I’m just going to avoid posting at all on my hot buttons. Everybody knows how I feel about adults and underaged kids having sex, fr instance, and I don’t have to say it anymore.

I’m going to try to dial it back in the football threads too. Last season was a horrorshow. My worst nightmare. Thank God the Superbowl was cancelled. I don’t know what would have happened to my sanity if the Packers had won.

Oh, and my apologies to Packer fans. I went a lttle nuts there.

The fact that some people are now saying that they don’t know if they can trust me on Bible discussions does bother me some. It’s the one topic where I not only really do know what I’m talking about, but which doesn’t push any hot buttons for me.

I’m hearing you guys, ok. I’m going to try.

I will pay a million dollars to everyone who doesn’t say, “good on ya” and other such stuff.

My point was, you read those PMs and decided “this is the kind of thing where I’m going to take input from other posters and take action on it”. Whereas, with all the posters saying “could you please change your annoying posting style”, you decide to blow them off. If you did the reverse I wouldn’t be thinking that you are courting controversy at the boards and enjoying the fights you participate in.

P.S. Just saw your last post. I hope that what I said in the previous paragraph was wrong.

P.P.S. Good on ya, Diogenes the Cynic! (Nzinga, Seated: I don’t need no stinking million.)

Good on ya.

Oh, I really still feel confident that this is true. Don’t get me wrong. It’s just the difference between absolute confidence and … something slightly less than absolute confidence, I suppose.

Oh, you fancy huh? You don’t need a million dollars. Ok.

I really don’t want to get into all this again, but that was a case of a false pregnancy, not a miscarriage, and the thread title was “my baby died.” I thought, at that time, that the thread title was misleading and manipulative. When I said “there was no baby,” I wasn’t ridiculing the belief that a fetus was a baby, but was pointing out that there literally was no fetus. Nothing died.
People can feel however they want about me doing that, but I at least want the description to be accurate.

Look, I know that you really love to get the last post in on these Diogenes pit threads. It just ain’t happening this time.

Aww. Ok. I can accept that.
