Okay, so I feel kind of dumb but I’m not quite figuring out directions for me. I’m coming from the Williamsport area, north central. Theoretically I could take 15 South straight down, right? Or no, because Mapquest is making things more convoluted than that…? ::whimpers:: I’m confused, help?
Well, I’ll be right out as far as the microbrewery is concerned; I love 'em, too, but we’ll have the young 'uns with us. DancesWithCats, thanks for responding about the time thing. I was afraid I’d missed that part. Steelerphan, the itinerary looks good to me!
For anyone who doesn’t know, we’re situated about halfway between G’Burg and Baltimore/Washington; our house is small, but anyone who cannot afford/doesn’t want a hotel, but doesn’t want to make the drive all the way home, we could put up a couple of people here on the sofa bed or floor.
Fear not, AntaresJB. I’ve driven 15 from Mansfield all the way down. There may be sections of construction, but this is to be expected-you’re in PA. Once below Sunbury/Selinsgrove continue south until you reach route 30, perhaps 15-20 miles south of the turnpike. Then follow the directions previously posted, and feel free to email for a cell phone #. Williamsport to Gettysburg is ~125 miles, but much of the travel is not limited access highway.
Hmm, maybe I will come (partially depends on when I get paid) now that my car is finally up to making a long trip. (I lost the clutch two weeks ago on my way to State College. I never thought a hill would stop me like that.)
Yeah, there’s something I never understood, and I’ve lived here almost all of my life…if they work on the roads so much, why are they all in such lousy shape?
I’m gonna go ahead and assume, based on possibility of being carded, that we won’t be making a trip to the brewery (fizzy ain’t legal yet), but if folks want to leave their nonlegal personnel with us for a bit, I’m sure we can find something to do, what with all that food and all those electrical outlets…
It’s a restaurant too, so I am sure you could get in. It’s not just a bar, from what I understand from their website.
Well, the offer still stands, but after checking my geography, it would be stupid for anyone to want to do this; turns out, going back to DC/Baltimore would take less time from Ghettysburg than coming to my place would! It would only make sense if you were coming from certain parts of WV or Ohio.
As far as the brewery is concerned, I’m guessing kids would be allowed since it’s also a restaurant (we have something like that here, too; Uncle Tucker’s Wood Fired Pizza and Brew House, and families go all the time), but the 4-year-old isn’t good with restaurants for any stretch of time. Plus, she’ll probably be exhausted from all the running around and stuff, and that makes her irritable.
Gettysburg isn’t too far away, but I’d be up for splitting a hotel room.
There’s a secret line item in the state budget that goes towards road deconstruction. They don’t call it that though, they misdirect us by using the sneakily phrase of “road improvement”. Each night, the road deconstruction crew works on small sections of roads, tearing them up with jackhammers. Then, every year right around February “construction season” starts. Only thing is they aren’t really building anything, and the state just needs an excuse to show off all those pretty cones, barriers, and flashing signs.
Truthfully, I think it’s the combination of bad weather and shoddy repair jobs.
You know the joke: What’s orange and sleeps six? A PENNDOT truck.
So was that place we went after the Melting Pot, but I didn’t feel comfortable having my kid there for too long in the smoke. I think we’ll decline to join you all after the picnic grounds.
When I talked to the nice lady at the Parks and Rec Department at the borough, I arranged to get the pavilion from 11 a.m. until dusk. Given that June 19 is one of the longest days of the year, I’d say we’re getting our money’s worth.
Oh, and it will be marked with a sign that says SDMB. I didn’t care to elaborate to the nice lady.
Robin
Prolly a good idea. Which one are we assigned? Kiwanis, Lions, or Firemen?
Darned if I can remember. I can’t find the piece of paper with all my notes on it.
The check hasn’t cleared yet, and if it doesn’t by Friday, I will call the nice lady and ask again.
Robin
Okay. Just got off the phone with the nice lady.
We’re good. She got the check and mailed out the receipt and permit. We’ve got the Kiwanis pavilion from 11 am to dusk.
Robin
Thanks Twickster, ScubaBen! I will do my best to be there, water wings and all!
I was just talking about iampunha and fizzy, who are adults. I never meant it was a good idea to bring children!
For those who want to stay the night in Gettysburg, I have proposed the idea of sharing a hotel room/rooms. I did a little research and found a few reasonably-priced hotels, see below. Another idea would be CAMPING! There are a ton of campgrounds and they are much cheaper! They all look really nice! Anyone interested? We could have breakfast in town on Sunday and visit the battlefield or tour the town.
