I’d peeked at this thread earlier, but punha just drew my attention back to it.
I’m kinda sad at the prospect of missing out of this big shindig, but I work weekends until 6 p.m. How likely is it that things will still be shaking around 7:30?
No takers on the computer idea? I guess without Internet access, so that we can post from the gathering, it would be a little too cumbersome.
But, I can bring cameras!
I forgot to mention that I have a NERF football to bring as well. If there is room, maybe we can have a friendly game among the football lovers that will attend.
I’m still wondering if there is power available. I can bring a good air-roaster and if anyone wants to bring something hot I can bring a couple extra crock-pots to keep it warm, assuming we have electric.
I was going to bring the acoustic/electric. If there’s power bring yours and we can electrify
Any drummers out there? We could have a full-blown Doper Band
I could see you coming down with a bad case of Dope Fever. The best remedy is to call in sick, grab that_darn_cat and get out to the country! If you ask nicely, you might get Qagdop to write a Doctor’s note for you.
Regrets, but I think I’m going to have to miss this one. I’ve got a lot of traveling going on recently, and I’m not going anywhere that I don’t have to. I really am going to make it up one of these days.
danceswithcats has been putting the pressure on me to weigh in here. So here I am, to say I can’t make it. I’m going to be in Chicago doing BIG IMPORTANT SECRET THINGS!
Two questions answered: The pavilions have electrical receptacles! I’ve got three large cords, an expander box, and portable GFCI in the work truck, so that’s covered. Also, the park permits bringing cooking equipment. So, I’ll stuff the propane grill in the truck along with an extra bottle of gas and we can heat/cook to our heart’s content.
I’d like to come, but I have a bunch of resumes out there, so my future is kind of fluid. Also, I know I don’t post very often, so is this just for the dopers who know each other? I must say, it does sound like it will be a blast!
Come one, come all! I’ve got a friend who I’ve recently turned on to the greatness that is the Dope – he’s registered, but I don’t think he’s posted yet, and he’s thinking about coming.
It is absolutely a matter of “the more, the merrier” – hope your fluidity will be such that you can swim by and wave a water wing at us.
Speaking for myself, many of these people I know by having met them at Dopefests. So I suggest you attend, schedule permitting, and meet us all in person. We’d be glad to have you!
OK, so what are we doing afterwards? I don’t want to drive all the way up there to have a picnic and drive all the way back. Just a quick Google search turned up this place… Gettysburg Pub & Microbrewery: http://www.gettysbrew.com/ I’d love to try some Gettysburg microbrews! Anyone else interested in going in on a cheap hotel room? I know there will be some people traveling long distances…
Well it looks as if I’ll be in for this one, and seeing as how my drive is pretty much the same (and I’ll probably be carpooling with other people from around here), I’m totally in for a night and a cheap hotel room in rockin’ Gettysburg.
It looks like the events are sorting themselves out. So far, we have a big picnic, outdoor games, board and parlor games, and an after-hours hangout.
I have been organizing a family reunion for my wife’s family for the past few years. It never goes as planned, but that’s partially because many of the family members don’t talk to each other due to old insults and transgressions. This attituse follows family lines, so you can see that they’re a fun bunch.
On to the point: I suggest this as a sample itinerary-
[ul]
[li]We meet as the picnic area becomes available, and set up for lunch. We should get the food out of the way early, at least any dishes that would need refrigeration.[/li][li]We organize any physical games for the better fit, and the less able can cheer them on. Maybe some meaningless trinket prizes for this and the board games, like G’burg souvenirs?[/li][li]Don’t forget to say hi! to Opal.[/li][li]As the afternoon goes on we play some board games, play music and finish off the food. If anyone wants to tour the battlefield, this is where we can get together to tour.[/li][li]Pictures can be taken all day; a group shot could be set up.[/li][li]As those who need to go leave, those willing to stay after cleanup can move to the alternate location (whatever tavern is OK)[/li][li]If some would like to continue games and such after dark, the ones wanting hotel rooms might get rooms near each other for convenience[/li][li]Everyone rushes to post their stories about the gathering[/li][/ul]
Add and subtract as you like. I present this as a place to begin.
Only a few motels are right in town, the majority are on the outskirts, but Gettysburg isn’t that terribly big to start with. A handful are located on Steinwehr Avenue adjacent to the Battlefield, and another group is located on York Street, a.k.a. Route 30 on the east side of town. I’m pretty sure that’s close to the brewery which nyctea mentioned. Word to the wise: anybody who is thinking about a room had best make haste to reserve it-this town is overrun with touristas during the summer. Email me for phone numbers of motels if you’d like: danceswithcats@att.net
Regarding times-that hasn’t been determined AFAIK- it depends on the permit being obtained by MsRobyn.
