Central PA Dopefest?

Scuba Ben has beaten me to my offer to bring Fluxx, but I do have a pretty decent assortment of games. I’ll contribute Wizard, a variation of Oh Hell, Zobmondo, a game in which a person is given a choice between two really bad alternatives, and everyone else has to figure out which one he or she picked, Chronology, Chrononauts, and anything else which looks interesting. I’ll throw in a couple of decks of cards for those willing to subject themselves to Double-Deck or Triple Deck Hearts and a backgammone board. Twickster, count me in for Outburst. I also play frisbee and volleyball. Basically, if it has rules (this may not include Fluxx) or makes music, I’ll try to play it!

CJ

Fluxx does too have rules! The rules just keep changing, that’s all.

I’m game for Outburst and Chrononaughts. I was a wild-card contender in Chrononaughts at WorldCon 2001, and I haven’t played in a few years. Somewhere I think I have a copy of the Beatles Reunion CD from 1985-alternate.

Zobmondo sounds very fun. Hey, let’s play 'em all!

Speaking of games, naked twister, anyone? Or naked slip-and-slide?

Eh, I bet the park won’t allow that either :frowning:

I have no games to bring, but I’m thinking of dragging along my guitar so any other musical Dopers and I can jam or something. Good idea, or no?

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Should I be able to make it I’ll brng my bass along.

Central PA Dopefest directions

From Phila:
PA turnpike westbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit (was I-17, now I-236), take US-15 south. Take ramp right onto York Street US-30. Follow US-30 into the center of town to a circle. Go ¾ of the way around and follow US-15 Bus/SR-116. US-15 Bus/Baltimore Street to where US-15 bears right and becomes Steinwehr Avenue. Long Lane will be on your right.

From Pittsburgh:
PA turnpike eastbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit. After that, follow above.

From Washington:
I-495 inner loop to I-270 towards Frederick, MD. Follow US-15 north, into PA. Take exit for US-15 Bus/Steinwehr Avenue. Long Lane will be on your left.
Anything lacking-shout!

Oooh, oooh, I love to sing! And am moderately good at it.

Thanks, danceswithcats!!!

I will still make a visit to the park when I get back home. If you have questions, ask away!

Robin

Through the marvelous courtesy of Triskadecamus, it will be possible for myself and the Skulldigger to attend. I’ll have to consult with her at more length on what manner of bizarre foodstuff we can come up with that will take a seven-hour drive and be appropriate for a Dopefest.

The town is just not going to know what hit it.

How big does the group have to get before you have to get a festival permit to hold this thing?

I don’t know about “bizarre”, but stuff like tortillas and salsa travel well (are my prejudices showing too badly? ) Also, they’d go well with the chili cook-off. Just a suggestion, of course. I’m sure you’ll figure out something appropriately wonderful.

danceswithcats, I’d just like to extend a thanks for keeping tabs on this; also, to Ms. Robyn for thinking up the whole thing! Robin, do you think that since the park doesn’t allow alcohol, maybe I should make all the fruit salad G-rated, or do you think the vodka would still be okay?

Something with which to console yourself after you both lose to me yet again at Boggle:D (No, I am never going to shut up about that. If YOU were me, would YOU be quiet about TWICE beating the Patron Saint of the SDMB, and his wife, at a game not involving physical skill beyond being able to properly operate a pencil and paper?)

It seems to me that we’ve got tons o’ food, but relatively little on the way of libations non-alcoholic (the other kind being verboten, evidently). With 15 groups/people bringing food and two bringing drinks, I’d say you’d be fairly safe hieing yourself up with more beverage-type material (bonus points if it’s found in The South but no so much up north, though what there is of that beyond sweet tea is beyond me), especially since you can just piggyback it in Tris’ cooler.

I’d keep the fruit salad G-rated. I know this crowd well enough that no one will get sozzled, but at the same time, it’s not something I’d be willing to risk.

Robin

Not to mention, if there’s fruit, that’s a safe food for me. No alcohol, please!

Ginger, I was originally planning on making two fruit salads, one with the vodka, one without. But I will certainly abide by Ms. Robyn’s wish to make it all without.

If I can make a suggestion to those who can’t cook, don’t want to cook, or who’s best recipe won’t survive the drive, we’re going to need paper plates and bowls, napkins, silverware, pop, chips, etc. Judging from the response, I’d say we’re going to need a lot of them!

See you next month!
CJ

It turns out that the previous directions are wrong. I used an online map utility to locate Long Lane, and there are two of them in Gettysburg, the utility showing the part we don’t want. Thankfully, I did a drive-by while enroute to the Edward the Head bon voyage barbecue and discovered the screwup.

Central PA Dopefest directions

From Phila:
PA turnpike westbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit (was I-17, now I-236), take US-15 south. Take ramp right onto York Street US-30. Follow US-30 into the center of town to a circle. Go halfway around the circle, continuing to follow US-30, street name now Chambersburg Street. At the traffic light where US-30 bears right, turn left onto West Street, and proceed south. West Street dead ends at Long Lane, and the park is to your right.

From Pittsburgh:
PA turnpike eastbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit. After that, follow above.

From Washington:
I-495 inner loop to I-270 towards Frederick, MD. Follow US-15 north, into PA. Take exit for PA-134/Taneytown Road towards Gettysburg. At the traffic light where PA-134 crosses US-15 Business/Steinwehr Avenue, the name changes to Washington Street. Proceed north several blocks and turn left on Gettys Street, which will dead end at Long Lane. You will be facing the park.

Park recon: Several ballfields, playground equipment such as swings, slides, and the like for kidlets. Three pavilions, called Kiwanis, Lions, and Firemens. The first two are located closest to Long Lane & Queens Street, with the latter a block North at Long Lane & Gettys Street. I checked out the Firemens pavilion (natch) and it contains 10 large picnic tables which should accommodate 6 BPT* with comfort. The other two looked quite similar from the parking area. Wait for a future post from MsRobyn regarding the one to which we’ve been assigned.

For those who wondered about purchasing foodstuffs locally-there is a Kennies supermarket on Middle Street between West and Franklin Streets, less than ¼ mile away.

Any Dopers who would like a backup contact can email for my cell phone number: danceswithcats@att.net

*BPT=butts per table

Sorry to have been a :wally and caused confusion.

We are at the smallest picnic pavilion, but damned if I remember the name. The lady at the borough hall said that it’ll hold 45-60 people. When I remember and/or ask, I’ll post.

Robin

I’m on the silverware detail. Plates of high-quality plastic (none of that falls apart with a touch of water paper junk), napkins, bowls (for chili and fruit), plus utinsels.

Meros, where are you planning to plug in your bass?

Frisbee sounds like a blast as I haven’t played any Ultimate in a long time. The most I do now as some disc golf.

I can’t wait to see everyone there. Bring cameras!
