Norinew, I volunteered potato salad, but my ego got me involved in the Chili Challenge. If you want to bring potato salad, I can switch over to German potato salad, as well as the winning chili . Actually, I’d rather do the German, since, as no one else I know likes it (fools), it only means more private stock for me.
Will Airman be in attendance, or is he on duty? I’m looking forward to meeting him. I owe him a beer.
Speaking of which, anyone on beverages? I realize the park may be “dry”, so if it seems we’re covered on food, instead of German potato salad, I can pick up a few cases of soda (assorted–cola, diet, caffeine free, lemon-lime, root beer, orange, whatever). Juice boxes for the kiddies? Coolers I might need help with…

Well, I am supposed to be off in June, for the entire month. But, no assurances have been forthcoming from the powers that be that I am actually going to be off at all. Go figure these folks.
I will hereby assume that I am either going to be off, or that I am going to be sick that day.
So, I have a Toyota Corolla heading to Gettysburg, with three empty seats, leaving Springfield VA, that day, at a reasonable hour of departure. (Mapquest says an hour and thirty eight minutes to downtown Gettysburg, I figure two, cause I drive slow.) Detours to pick up other dopers are certainly a reasonable change in agenda.
I will bring a cooler of ice, a bunch of soft drinks, and some kim-chi. (Unless I burn myself out on kim-chi between now and then, in which case I will bring something else.)
So, at some time or other, I will be coming back to Springfield, and I imagine that will be later the same day. Or, that’s my plan, anyway. So what time are we starting this shindig, and bout how late will it run, do you spose?
Well, actually, I was just suggesting potato salad to fizzy, since she expressed confusion about what to bring. I don’t even eat white potatoes, so I’m all out as far as the potato salad goes. In addition to the mac and cheese, maybe I’ll make some whole-wheat pasta salad, too. Or, perhaps my “grown-ups only fruit salad”, which involves melon, strawberries and such, all steeped in vodka for some number of days. I can set some aside for the kiddies and non-alcohol drinkers, too.
That’ll be me, as I doubt fizzy will want to drive back from PA.
Now, I had thoughts about getting a gallon of Generic Chocolate Ice Cream and a half-gallon of something more edible, and putting them both in a Cheap Generic Cooler with Some Ice. I would assume that those will travel well enough to last at least as long as a snowball in hell, and possibly longer, but assuming folks don’t want ice cream with their chili salad and pasta flambe, maybe that is not so much the option.
Tris, any possibility of Poly and wife hying (ow, I think I misspelled bthat twice) their bodies (and some other stuff, as I doubt either wishes to be nude in public) up near you and carting them to meet admirers? Perhaps this fest falls under fees collected by the Polycarp Appreciation Society…
Don’t forget that Gettysburg isn’t entirely stuck in the 1860s and has supermarkets. If you want to bring something that you’re not sure will travel, you can always buy it there.
Day Before: Get icecream and other things you might need (anyone need a wet noodle?)
Day of, Noon: wake up.
Shortly After Noon: do other things **fizzy[/b makes you do so you don’t smell quite so heinous as you otherwise might.
After That: Drive to Gettysburg (picking up gobear and goboyfriend is contingent upon one of them letting one of us know they wanna be picked up from whatever place isn’t horribly far away from us … Tibet, for example, would be a bad pick-up location).
Some Time After That: Go back home.
I’m planning, see, on driving there, then sogging for a while without driving at all, then grudgingly driving back because fizzy won’t want to. Any other driving I do, short of “Blast, dwalin cut off his left leg? Ah, well, to the emergency room, if I MUST.” … not so much. Plus I’d have to ::SHUDDER:: ask directions to the grocery store, and That Isn’t Done.

Driving Mr. and Mrs. Carp from anywhere, to anywhere falls into the “It would be a pleasure” category. Money is not a factor, assuming that Poly ain’t going to be driving south from where he lives now before I pick them up.
I don’t seem to have a current email for Polycarp, so, Poly, why don’t you write me, and we can work this out. I am off (well, hopefully) that month, and do plan to come to Carolina to visit Lib, some time or other, maybe this can all string together, and you can get a ride all the way. Or, whatever is best for you.
That more or less brings my Toyota to full, though, unless one other small person wants to squeeze in.
Okay, put me in for a 5# batch of chili (no beans), decent sized batch of German potato salad, and one beer-on-the-sly for Airman. I’ll leave the mayo based potato salad to someone else. I’ll also have a bottle of Tabasco in the holster, just in case…

See the problem with potato salad is…well I don’t know how to make it. That’s the biggest problem.
If I make something it’ll need to be something that travels well (from SoVa) since I’ll have to use my kitchen to make it (especially if it involves an oven).
I’m thinking about just finding a new recipe for something desserty and bringing that.
For some strange reason Patrick really, really wants to bring a cooler. I think that’s the whole reason he wants to bring ice cream. The big weirdo.
