We’ll go simple and bring a cheese tray, with crackers and maybe some pepperoni, something that can sit out for a while safely.
We should make rain plans- we can still meet, but we will need somewhere indoors to gather. I was also interested in asking if anyone wanted to get together as a group for a battlefield charter tour?
Triskademus, I do have a current e-mail address for Polycarp, so I’ll pass the contents of your post on to him. I hope I do get a chance to meet you. I’ve admired you for some time.
I’ve also got a recipe for cheese bread I’ve been wanting to try out, so I’ll bring that as well as the sausage rolls.
Finally, since it looks like we’ve got enough drivers from Pittsburgh, I’ll be happy to travel with someone. My e-mail address is in my profile. I don’t get carsick; I do navigate, usually well. I’m also willing to chip in for gas, turnpike tolls, etc.
I’m looking forward to seeing you, both those I’ve met and those I haven’t met!
I’ve never been to Gettysburg, so I’m not clear what the situation is – can we all just show up, or, with a crowd that size should we put in a reservation or request or dibs of some sort with … whoever … ?
I am thinking of bringing a tray of mini-sandwiches, maybe tuna salad, egg salad, and cold cuts and cheese. How’s that sound? I would bring something dessert-y but it looks like there is already a ton of sweet stuff.
I did a little research and came up with the following:
The picnic area in question is behind the Visitor Center, and is rather small- we may be forced to move elsewhere, due to space.
There are no park regulations requiring us to register; but if we would like we can hire a battlefield guide. If we’re more interested in socializing with each other than touring the park, maybe someone can scout a good hotel or restaurant where we could sit in comfort. I wouldn’t want to impose, but do we know anyone in the vicinity who would volunteer to host?
This is the only listing I could find for any official events on that day:
June 18-20, 2004
Gettysburg Brass Band Festival
Band ensembles participate in many musical events along Gettysburg’s “Historic Pathway”, including workshops, concerts, and performances

Siege, if you would like to carpool, you can drive to our house and leave your car. We can carpool and save a little gas. Anyone else? I may rent a van if there is enough interest.
There appears to be a picnic area of indeterminate size in the southwest corner of the park, Warfield Ridge. It’s been a long time since I’ve been at the park, but it appears to overlook Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, the Peach Orchard. Anyone more familiar with this part of the park?
Sounds good to me, although I may change plans if I can talk a certain gentleman into joining me. I’ll let you know closer to the date. As for the Brass Band Festival, that’s an extra attraction for me – I grew up on good brass band music!
Congrats on surviving Hell Week! Do they permit temporary tents? If we’re two days out from this event, the weather looks yukky, we could still meet and have a point of refuge should it only be semi-yukky. I can rent tents from several of the contractor yards in Hanover or Gettysburg. A pavilion would be ideal, but I don’t think the park has them, do they?
BTW-I’m updating the what and who list every time I visit the boards, but will only post it when the thread needs to be bumped, or every week or so.
There are a lot of DC and Phila Dopers who haven’t spoken up. We know who you are, so make out the plan, Stan, load up the bus, Gus, no need to be coy, Roy, just get yourself free- for the 19th (with apologies to Paul Simon)
TruePisces has told me that neither she nor Verrain will be in attendance, as they will be out of town on the 19th. I intend to come, though I don’t know if transportation will work out (read: hopefully I’ll have my driver’s license by then). I don’t know about the other PhillyDopers.
Frankly, I doubt he’ll join us, but I’ll give it a shot. Maybe if I explain it’s kind of like an RG . . . ? I don’t suppose any of you folks would be willing to give Double-Deck, Cancellation, Guts, Go-Fish Hearts a try, would you?
Hell, if he drives into Center City (and spends half an hour driving around looking for a parking space), you know he’s not going to cavil at driving to Gettysburg!
