And I’m telling you I don’t think it’s funny. I’m tired of half the board thinking the people who chat are twofaced idiots, or jerks, or worse. And this did nothing to help.

Doesn’t look anything like any SD chat that I’ve ever seen. Since when does anyone ask for an a/s/l? Since when does one person only say ROFL @ _____? Unless you were making fun of people who DO chat like that, I’m wondering if this was a real chat. If you were, it would probably be a good thing to indicate that somewhere.
If not, you’re mischaracterizing what goes on in there, and making every chat regular look like vacant teenage wastes of air. And I know you want to feel a kinship with people, Freak, but that’s not the way to go about it.

I get into chat frequently myself, and am often amused by the seemingly random cascades of thought. I don’t see the readers or participants as jerks; I simply find humour in how nonsensical the conversation can seem to one who has not been involved in the whole thing, especially when there are multiple conversations taking place, as is obviously the case here.
Thought this was a particularly good example, actually.
Have to mention, I didn’t even see the #straightdope at the top. Shows you how good my reading skills can be.
Did you notice the silly nature of the names? It wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. And I have seen someone ask a/s/l, a few times in fact. And every time it’s done by someone who obviously doesn’t belong there. For instance, one time someone drifted in and asked what the channel was about, then asked the a/s/l question. Notice that nobody amswered studguy? That was the point, he was out of place.
The main premise of the joke that you’ve now picked apart beyond recognition, is how garbled it can look if you’re only there for a couple minutes. Try it sometime, log in when the room is pretty full, and then log back out in two minutes. You’ll have no idea what anyone was talking about. At least, I don’t. It always takes me a few minutes make sense of what’s going on.
The chatroom is like any other place. It has it’s idiots and it’s geniuses, it’s assholes and it cool people. And everybody there has a different idea of who falls into what category. Just like any other place.
I stand by mine and Drain’s comments. NOT funny.
My question to you (in general):
I don’t recognize any of those characters from their Screen Names on the SDMB. Who are they?
And Freak, did you just sit and record this?
BTW I go to chat almost daily and I, for one, haven’t ever had a convo like this except for when we were pretending to be a teenchat (BSB RULZ! NE1 want to CH@ w/ 27/m?).

BTW Freak I don’t find it funny at all. And if you’re going to make fun of it, at least TRY to make it somewhat realistic.
The sad thing is, it took Freak a while to do this, probably . . . time wasted, IMNSHO.

I think you’re being incredibly defensive. Yeah, there’s a lot of people on the board who think chat is dumb and “high school like”. So who gives a shit what they think? There’s also a lot of people IRL who think the message board is dumb.
It’s like making a drunk Irishman joke. I’m Irish, therefore I can make jokes like that. I’m also a chatter. Besides, we all know the stereotypes aren’t true, and shouldn’t be taken seriously. And those who don’t, fuck’em.
I think Freak was making a joke… unfortunately it was a little poor in taste and not at all reflective of the way #straightdope actually is…now if he had titled it #teenchat…
In all seriousness, if people want to know what goes on in chat they should come and see for themselves. If people think poorly of me because I participate in chat, so be it. I doubt I will lose any sleep over it either way.
Freak, maybe a bit in poor taste, but no more so than other chatroom antics that have previously been posted. I can see where some people might get defensive, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out you were joking around.
I don’t go into the chat much anymore. I used to really enjoy it, but being that I don’t go in often enough, I’ve lost touch with some of the people I really enjoyed yakking with which sort of renders me semi invisible when I do go in.
