dear lord i have a tale to tell you thanks to spectrum cable and hp "smart "friend tech support and my own inability to communicate …
Ok what happened was apparently last Wednesday night there was a planned internet outage as at some point well be switching from cable to fiber optic internet stuff that and there was email sent out about it that i overlooked (or wasn’t sent to us)
Now i didn’t try to get on to the internet until late after noon Thursday i didn’t know what happened … and nothing worked i figured ok reset the modem and router … i did this 3 or 4 times and nothing … So i called spectrum and we tried resetting everything again and even tried all the software resets and nothing … So he sent me to hp tech support (and aunt shelled out 49.95 sign up and 14.95 a mo. to use )which had me putting in dos prompts i hadn’t had to use since the early 90s and it was decided that the network stuff was corrupted and needed to be reloaded
Problem with that is thus computer came with windows 7 and upgraded to 10 (8 was only put on long enough to get to 10 because it had stuff 10 used) So it was decided to do a factory reset and at first I couldn’t do one because of program conflicts but after several calls back and forth eventually someone remembered the win 7 way to do it and we did and wiped everything back 15 years …
My cousin came over Saturday and i told him what happened and he did the exact same thing i did a dozen times and o and behold it came back on …and then he told me about the planned outage … and wondered why the spectrum guy didn’t tell me what happened … after he left I called HP back yet again and said ok we can re upgrade … and we then found out we couldn’t … after trying various things hp decided my ancient network card died and i had ot get a new one
Well cousin came back over Sunday and he tried to redownload windows 10 … and that’s when we found out 7 is so old and outdated it couldn’t even load the webpages we needed so 450 dollars later we have a brand spanking new computer with a nice huge hd and a graphics card that will work for the next 5-10 years and win 11 and well i dont like some of the changes im discovering … aunt is not happy right now lets just say
The Missus has a 17-inch HP laptop running Windows 7. For some reason, it stopped playing the games she’d bought. I’m not sure how old it is, but she bought it when she was still in Nursing school – so at least a dozen years old; maybe as old as 14. She ended up buying a new 14-inch HP laptop with Windows 11 last week. She still can’t play her old games, but she’s found at least one new one she likes. She still has the 17-inch computer on her ottoman, but it looks like she’s mostly using the new computer now.
She’s still using the Amazon Fire HD-8 I bought her for Christmas four and a half years ago, mostly for reading ebooks.
This is how I feel most weeks re the MMP. I read, and then think, “nobody wants to hear about my boring life!”
I do think we’re very close to an official mortgage approval though. Since neither of our actual jobs can be considered in the decision, they told us we have to set up monthly withdrawals from the IRA we inherited from my FIL to serve as our income. I told them we have access to that account in any amount at any time; shouldn’t that be enough? Nope, there has to be a regular recurring payment to be considered “income.”
So we told our guy to go ahead and set up the payments starting in January. A couple months’ worth will serve as the minimum annual distribution anyway, and then after we’ve closed on the house we can cancel the monthly withdrawals. It’s a ridiculous and unnecessary hoop, but we keep jumping through ‘em. Hopefully this will be the final one, and we can get our rate locked in before it goes up again.
Been taking it (30MG pill once a day) and it doesn’t seem to have affected me (doesn’t seem to help my BP either). Hope the problems go away or the Dr. can prescribe something else.
Shady, that’s quite a tale. I only use my laptop when traveling and it seemed pretty slow at times, may need to get it diagnosed. Not ever sure which Windows it has.
Taters, safe trip and a better meeting than expected.
FCM, good news on Mom-unit.
Nettie, can’t help with the ivy, I’ll let others here provide advice.
VanGo, don’t know how old brother is, but 15 hours is a massive drive. Hope he makes it ok.
Wheelie, I don’t understand why your jobs can’t be considered but the IRA needs withdrawals for approval. Just glad I’m done with that business.
Glasses fixed, shopping done, sammich procured (they were out of chips so I settled for a brownie…). Will look to go swimmin’ at the gym in about an hour which should give me enough time to clean up and look presentable at the lawyers. Everybody take care.
Some of have to work. Your Amazon order won’t crush itself, ya know.
Small was done early, and good thing. the PDC supervisor forgot to schedule loaders for Orange 32. So I was split sorting and loading a truck. Then I had to fish irregs off the back of the 200, including a 138lbs entertainment center. I am sore. And storms are on the way.
I always thought it was the drivers who slung them somewhere near the door. (Actually, my local Amazon drivers are generally good, and I do OK with UPS. FedEcchs, OTOH…)
I will need to leave my job to move out of state, so that one is understandable.
But Mrs W irks remotely and will continue to do so. The mortgage company asked for a letter from her employer stating that she’ll get to keep her job after the move. The employer refused to provide said letter, so here we are.
I saw on the news this morning that all vessels, including canoes and kayaks, are required to have a PFD for each person onboard. As I said, if we spilled we could just stand up. But it’s The Law. I’ll have to see if I can find mine, and Wifey will need to get one.
Take care Taters and have a good trip. I hope it’s not too stressful.
Nettie I concur on the heat. I am not happy. Not happy at all. I propose that you don’t have much energy because you’re working in the heat (bad) and because you’re still recovering from being sick (also bad). Try not to overdo and drink lots of fluids. I’ll turn this over to Nurse Boo now…
WetOne I hope your leg heals up quickly. How long until you leave on your trip?
Day 2 of petsitting. Daisy (Mom’s dog) is not feeling well, poor thing. I can see why my mom frets about her.
I actually was done attacking ivy well before 7, when temperatures were still reasonable. I’m very likely going to wait until late night/early morning to check the mail again, since when I did that about 45 minutes ago now, I already thought it was a tad warm out. Will make sure to hit the fluids, since I’m still not 100% (lower digestive system is still not exactly settled).
Right, but everyone wants to know about my laundry schedule! Yanno, the nice thing about the MMP - if people want to skip over your post, you’ll never know. It’s not like someone is standing there yawning in your face! Not that it happens to me - I know all of you live for the daily updates of my life.
Keep it down with the whining!
Just got interrupted in my reading by the dentist offering FCD an earlier appointment. I accepted it on his behalf, so he’ll have 2 days in a row at the dentist - first for a cleaning and then for a temporary crown. Can’t wait till he wakes up so I can tell him. Meanwhile, back to my book. I’m reading Wil Wheaton’s Still Just a Geek - he has a very conversational style, and it’s an easy, fast read. I’m enjoying it bunches!
We have done this with white vinegar and epsom salts and dish soap. ( For some unknown reason we had a large quantity of epsom salts laying about.) The white vinegar doesn’t smell as strongly as apple cider vinegar. Anyway, it works.
I feel your pain. Sorta. My old desktop, which I put together myself lo these many years ago, is still running Win 7. There’s something in Win 10 that my hardware can’t handle and my 'puter still runs great just as it is, so I don’t worry about it. I suppose someday I’ll be forced to ‘upgrade’, but I ain’t doing it voluntarily. When I do, I’ll prolly get one of those itty-bitty NUC boxes. It’ll take up a lot less real estate on my desk.
Well, we’re moved, for the most part. There’s still stuff we need to do at the old house, and a storage locker over there full of stuff, but I don’t think we can stuff any more crap treasures into this little house.
The ‘kids’ that live around the corner are still trying real hard to put together a deal with us. They had an estimate from their foundation guy for $85,000. I’m surprised they still want to do it. Wifey is letting another flipper that’s been pretty persistent have a look at the house to see what he says, but we really want the ‘kids’ to get it if they can find a way.
We’ll see.
You have my sympathy, I’m glad you were able to get everything accomplished quickly. Hubs gaming comp issues took almost two weeks to fix.
I’ve been reading that mortgage rates seem to have topped out for a while. Hopefully you will have time to get all of the folderol dealt with.
Nettie, I love puttering around in our garden but I’ve never had ivy. It’s pretty and such, but hubs absolutely refuses to have ivy in our yard. It probably wouldn’t do very well out here anyhow, I never see it growing wild.
Mom used to have it growing up the side of the family home until she looked up and saw that some ivy had pushed its way between the roof and wall. Dad spent the next couple of weekends destroying every bit of the ivy, beer, bad words and fire were involved as I recall.
OWOWOWOW!!! No crippling yourself the first month of retirement! I hope you are pain free for your trip.
Its just before 1300 and 91F outside. The AC guy will be here Wednesday morning. Today will be about the same as yesterday, it will be a little warmer tomorrow and then we will start getting serious heat on Wednesday. I sure hope the AC guy doesn’t have to order parts.
Happy Moanday, everyone! I started posting multiple times over the last couple of days but kept getting interrupted. I went for a long walk in the gorgeous weather on Saturday and paid for it with the worst aching hand and foot joints I’ve ever had. I did so well in sunshine last summer, I wasn’t expecting this. I don’t know if this means I’m out of lupus remission and don’t want to know. There’s nothing docs can do if I AM out, so I intend to just scowl at my hands and feet when they act up. I’m better today, and it’s cloudy out.
My Al Vocado has developed the same old leaf issue. I’m going to see if new soil helps. If not, there’s really nothing left to try. All my other pets–I mean plants–are thriving.
wheelz, post away! It’s not called the Mind-blowing Monday Post, ya know. I LIKE reading about all the pet antics and FCM’s laundry schedule and what swampy’s having for dinner.
Taters, good luck on the trip!
shady, sorry about the computer frustrations.
nettie, heat or not, your body still may need more time to recover than you might think. Good luck with eradicating the ivy. I can see why with Buddy coming 'round, you wouldn’t want poisoned ivy.
Afternoon all. I am now the possessor of a duly legal-type Last Will and Testament, all nicely typed and signed and witnessed and legal looking. Now I can put it away for another 20 years (one hopes). I’ve also put up my vacation pictures in Facebook, if you’re not a friend already, message me and I’ll send you the URL.
I went for a walk down the beach (2.64 miles r/t). I returned home to an email from the Chamber of Commerce, in answer to an email I sent them Saturday. I suggested they sell walking stick medallions for our little seaside community. I replied with a picture of the one I have on my stick, and links to pics online (google searches). I had to go to the corner market, so I thought I may as well drive down to the CofC’s new digs. I showed the guy my hiking stick, and he thought medallions would be a good idea. I told him I’d buy a couple if they did it.
I have logged off and shut down both work laptops…another Monday, in the books!
After three days of heat and storms, it was sooooo nice to be able to have windows open again today! The breeze and cloud cover made it a touch chilly at times, but I had to close my home office’s window at 2:00 (I had a call, someone nearby had a power tool going, and I like to use my Logitech speakerphone) and by 2:30 the room was feeling a little stuffy. I was glad to open the window again.
My best friends’ son – who will turn 21 in a few months and has called me “aunt” since he started talking – broke his foot yesterday! He tripped over something at home. He’ll be having surgery on Thursday. His summer plans are ruined. His mom is helping me think of something to send him that might help him feel better. At least he finished his final exams/moving out of his dorm last week.
He doesn’t just crush Amazon boxes…
Awww, you didn’t have to leave me so much!
(Someone had to say/do it!!)
And with that, I shall decamp to the living room for some television watchin’ and dinner eatin’…
I’d love to see the pics!
An Alaska cruise has been on my bucket list for years; unfortunately, Mrs W has a different bucket.
One of these years I’ll talk her into it.
