Chips are a valid sandwich condiment!

The article says by 1959 eight of ten households served canned tuna once a week. Many added chips. Kenji prefers barbecue for taste, and kettle-cooked to resist moisture. Possibly placing chips between melty cheese and the tuna.

Never did this in my house. But similar crunchy things are often added to gyros or to hot dogs in many countries. I find it does not much improve things.

My wife, when offering to make me tuna salad, will mention that we have chips to add to the sandwich as an enticement. I add more to the plate, as they are also useful for scooping up the tuna that falls out of the sides of the sandwich. Sometimes I just forgo the bread and scoop the tuna with chips - Fritos scoops are really good for this.

As a kid, we’d buy buttered kaiser rolls from the candy truck that parked down the street from the HS, along with a bag of BBQ chips - which makes a really delicious sandwich.

I am a proponent of chips on a sandwich. You can also match certain flavors of chips with a sandwich. Salt and vinegar were mentioned, but barbecue chips might be nice or something with cheese flavor like Doritos.

Just two caveats. As said earlier, you have to put them on right before eating or they will get soggy. And I’d also add that this works well with flat chips (potato and tortilla chips in particular), and Fritos can be good, but a chip like Cheetos can be awkward. They tend to fall out and get messy.

Another nice one is Funyuns. They add crunch and an onion flavor that is nice on a variety of sandwiches.

You’re speaking of fries, here, and I completely agree. It makes my mouth dry just thinking of that.

Agree!

The first time I saw anyone put chips on a sandwich was at the Hamburger Hamlet in Westwood Village in the mid-70s. It was a German tourist couple, and they put the chips on hamburgers.

You aren’t adding enough condiments.

Sometimes too much is too much.

The 3 or 4 times a year I eat a sandwich from Subway I always buy a bag of Cheetos and add them to my sandwich. Gives it a nice crunch with the cheesy goodness.

I had one just the other day on the way home from Harrisburg.

Herr’s recently released a line of chips specifically for this purpose: Herr’s Sandwi-chips

Bobby Flay puts potato chips on the burgers at his burger restaurant.
