Pork chops are in the oven, potatoes are boiling, and the gravy is made. Starting my first mai tai. Dinner may be as early as 17:00.
I can understand that, for sure. My mother always made piroshky from a recipe she got from a Russian woman in Juneau. It’s a PITA to make, as it requires raised dough wrapped around a ground meat mixture and then deep-fried, but the smell of the rosemary is a powerful memory of my mother, who loved that herb.
Cross-posting from QZ:
Our State Senator (we’re in Whatcom County) has died.
It doesn’t say that he died of COVID-19, but…
Last month Ericksen tested positive for COVID-19 in El Salvador.
He was taken to a hospital in Florida where it was reported that he was in stable condition and on the road to recovery.
FTR: I didn’t vote for him.
Welcome back obi! Hope you get your belly woes sorted out soon.
Sis is out on the patio talking to BIL. We et Greek for supper. See y’all tomorrow.
Howdy Y’all! I cleaned collards and did a load of laundry, so I can say I was a productive adult today. Go Me! Of course, chillage and slack were accomplished the rest of the day.
obi welcome back. Glad the belly woe is not sump’n horrible and hope you find out what it is soonest.
Nellie sorry your back is not any better today. Hopefully soon.
It’s supposed to be rainin’ here, but not yet. Weather app keeps sayin’ rain is comin’. Bring it on and let it rain all night I say. I like goin’ to sleep to the sound of rain.
Evening all. Got up before 7am, left the house at 7:40 and didn’t get back inside until 4:15pm–rest of the day was spent on indoor soccer, which was fine because it poured down rain for a couple hours during the afternoon. Dinner has been dined upon but think I’ll be heading off to bed early tonight.
Got a note from Brother, they are still sorting things out in their new house (not a big surprise to any MMP’ers) and I got a hotel reservation via Hotels.com (surprisingly low rate for 22-26 December). Also have my deposit in for the May '22 Alaska cruise, so that is my Xmas present to myself.
Bah! It was a Jedi mind trick… Seriously, hope the GP can come up with a reason and a fix for your pain.
And while we’ll hoping for pain alleviation, here’s hoping nellie can get some real relief.
Taters, stay after the HOA on the neighbors. Courtesy is something everybody needs to practice. Good luck.
OK, that’s about all I’m capable of this evening. Tomorrow is another day. See all y’all then.
Boston Cream
3 cups sugar
1 cup clear corn syrup
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup chopped black walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla
In a heavy saucepan combine sugar, syrup and cream. Bring to a boil and cook till the mix reaches the soft ball stage, about 236 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove from heat and beat long and hard as the mix cools and thickens. You can beat by hand if you have a strong arm, or use a heavy duty mixer. The mix should become paler in color, almost an off white. The beating is the secret. Just before it’s too thick to spread blend in vanilla and black walnuts, then spread in a buttered pan. When cool cut into small pieces to serve.
I list this recipe with black walnuts because the family has never used anything else. It’s my guess that the nuts were free, as the tree is so common around here. One time only I made it with pecans, and while it was tasty, it just wasn’t the same to me.
if anyone tries this let me know how it came out, and if you like it.
Waves to everyone, I’m trying to keep up, but things are happening here.
Hub’s best friend is in the ICU with heart issues. He doesn’t have anyone to extort him into getting vaxed like hubs did which seems to be an issue. The heart surgeon refuses to schedule anyone who isn’t fully vaccinated which means the idiot (hub’s friend) will probably die at home and be eaten by his cats. I have so many things to say about mental illness, I’m going to move on from this subject.
I stitch to relax. I have grooves in my fingertips from holding needles and laying tools because I’m REALLY relaxing right now.
I’m kinda frustrated with my current piece. It has a lot of blackwork (which is done exclusively with back stitch and looks the same on the front and the back). I didn’t get along with blackwork back in the day and I don’t get along with it any better now that my eyes are worse and I’m stoned all the time. If I don’t get it figured out soon, I’ll remember that life is too short to pretend to enjoy something you hate.
Sorry for being cranky, but I hate this time of the year. Before I retired I dreaded going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark, but sitting at home when it’s dark until 0800 and gets dark at 1800 still bites.
I will say that I’m really happy how well the Secret Santa is going. I organized it this year because I enjoyed shopping for someone last year and am really happy about the results. I was really worried about the post office not playing fair, but it seems as though they really are delivering.
nellie Are you able and willing to play with THC and stuff? My back is trashed and I will be talking to a surgeon in a couple of weeks, so I promise I know what pain is. Pot doesn’t stop the pain for me. It gets me stoned so I tolerate the pain better. “Whoo dude, I hurt so much I can’t get up out of my chair to get more thread, but that’s OK, I’ve got a cat. Puffpuffcough”
Currently I have big spikes of pain shooting up my spine into the back of my head and smaller ones shooting down my left leg. Am I aware that I’m in pain? Yes, yes I am. Do I care?
No, not really. I’m heading off to my soft sided heated waterbed shortly. Once I found the right water level and heat, I started sleeping all night and waking up pain free. Of course I start hurting as soon as I start walking around, but just being able to sleep pain free really helps a lot.
Ice and heat help as well. Get a gallon freezer bag and put a cup of rubbing alcohol and two cups of water in, seal it up and put it in another bag that you will also seal. Leaks happen. Freeze. Now you have a nice big slush bag that you can mold over your body instead of lumpy ice or little blue ice bags.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 64 Amurrkin out and rainy(ish) with a predicted high of 71 and mostly cloudy for the day. The rain shall go away shortly. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization. I have Chalice duty this mornin’. N.O,L. shall be at the good seafood place as a gnawin’ and a cravin’ for fried shrimpies is upon both of us. The rest of the day shall be spent in general sloth.
Nameless I like the idea of the rubbing alcohol and water. Next time I have need of such I shall remember that.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then purtification for deheathenization must commence.
Happy Sunday Y’all!
Been up since before 3 - I could not fall back to sleep, so I foresee a long day. Fortunately, we don’t have to go anywhere. Except we need milk - I noticed last night, the sell-by date on our milk is Dec 2, and it barely passed the sniff test. But other than a milk run, I got nothing.
It’s a very mild 50° but today’s high is just supposed to be in the mid-40s - I suspect we’re on the downslide towards the 20s tonight. December’s back.
Found out my MIL still hasn’t put a credit freeze in place - she’s been busy canceling all her store credit cards. She’s obviously unclear on the concept, so FCD is going to get the necessary info from her today and do the freeze on line. I just hope no one has tried to get a loan on FIL’s identity.
And as we begin the last week in run up to Christmas, let the panic begin!
Happy Sunday!
baker, your Boston creams sound like a similar formula to pralines. The big differences are cane syrup instead of corn and pecans instead of walnuts.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and saw Sis off. I’ll see her again Thursday when I go down to her house.
Sunday chores, prescription pick up, printing up my new auto insurance cards, filling the car up and making a pot of Italian wedding soup are on the agenda for the day.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
Afternoon, mumpers! My 'pooter says it’s 3C/37F and foggy here. Just goes to show the 'pooter can’t see out of the window just to its left, since it ain’t foggy at all. Weekend has been good so far, I went to the gym yesterday morning and then straight to the hairdressers for a cut, then back home for a restorative cup of tea. Lunch out at the good Chinese place, errands and a pleasant walk back home from town, leftovers from the freezer for dinner and an evening of films and champagne, just 'cos we could.
I’ve finished work for the year, went to our last gig of the year on Friday night, and am now hibernating in the house until Wednesday when I’ll be potentially seeing a friend as it’s her birthday, and then going to the pub with two friends (if no pub, I’m dropping off their xmas gifts instead). Thursday morning will be an early drop-off at the moggery for the cats, then home to await our scheduled video appointment for lateral flow tests…and (appendages of all sorts crossed) if they’re negative, we’ll be heading for the airport.
My favourite singer in the entire world is doing a “live from the living room in Spain” on Thursday evening so we should be comfortably ensconced in our hotel room by then, armed with a tablet and able to join him and his lovely wife for a couple of hours of songs.
nellie sorry to hear about the back woes, that does sound quite horrible. I hope you find some relief for it.
mooooom I think a Scotsman piping on the beach is an excellent graphic for a boat. FCD will have to be convinced that the Mumpers have spoken!
obi Welcome back! Good to hear that you don’t have a hernia, and I hope the GP can get to the root of the problem for you.
Cupcakes welcome back to you too!
Dicey safe travels, hope it’s not too stressful for you.
Right…'tis Sunday and therefore slothage shall ensue
I signed up for the Hulu with live local channels. Holy crap on a cracker is it a pain in the butt to navigate!! I’m pretty sure I’m going to drop it before the free trial is up. I don’t understand why these streaming services don’t assign numbers to the channels so you can go from one to the other without scrolling thru the entire list. And there’s no “back to last channel” option. Not impressed.
Aggravated… that is all.
Good morning. It’s currently 34 degrees and cloudy/foggy.
I have much to do today and must pick up Polar’s meds too. He has enough to get through tomorrow, but I need to get them picked up today. I have some additional errands to run as well.
After that, it’s back home to do laundry.
I hope all goes well with your trip, boofae.
I am sorry you’re aggravated, buttercup. I sure hope that whatever the issue is, it sorts itself out.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. it’s rainy and dreary enough that the street lights didn’t go off till 0800, but “Princess Pretty Paws” did do his business.
I’m not panicking. But I’m more excited about having my Facebook pic planned out than the actual holiday, so there.
There is a channel listing feature in there. I just don’t use it, as I find the category listing easier to use. YMMV.
I hope you can get some relief from you spine woes, nellie. And {{{{hugs}}}}
{{{{Butters}}}}
Enjoy the trip, boofae. One of the bands I follow is doing a live feed tonight. ![]()
Can it be edited? On YouTubeTV, you can delete the channels you don’t watch, so you don’t have to scroll down a long list. I haven’t been able to figure out if it can be tailored.
It’s just long sighted- it’s really foggy here today. I couldn’t see the buildings over the road this morning, though it’s thinned a bit now.
I’m doing a whole lot of nothin’ today. I vacuumed the floor, and I think I shall head out into the mists shortly for walkies- sunset’s before 4 today, so I can’t leave it much later- but that’s about it.
That I don’t know.
Morning all. Reading the Hulu/You Tube/all the other TV options reminds me how old I am, with three main channels, 1-2 grainy “UHF” (or was it VHF) channels, and a little later public TV. Now we have so many choices…
41F this morning and not getting much warmer during the day, the rain yesterday brought in a cold front. But supposed to be back in the 60’s by Xmas (when I’ll be 400 miles away).
So everyone have a good Sunday now.
