No items? I love items. I love the whole Ebay thing - I just find it fascinating.
Ahhh…
I’d been wondering when I’d find a SDMB thread about my favorite game.
Been more or less my favorite game since I started playing. Sadly, I don’t get much time to play anymore – most of my time is spent answering y’all’s petitions.
Ayup. I’m a Testmaster. Datz me.
Got questions? I can answer 'em pretty handily, though not all of them. I can say this, though – we have had almost no negative feedback whatever about the game from people who have played it. They’ve said “I think you need to change this” or “You should do that instead”, but almost nobody has said “Dude, this game sucks!” after having played it. And the few who do get roundly trounced by their fellow players on the beta boards.
Hmmm. Seeing all this has made me want to play some more. Whee!
Does the game have a “hook” besides being about superheroes? It seems odd that there is no pvp or no items. I loved Freedom Force so the idea of making my own superhero sounds appealing (though it would be great if you could create a book of powers like in that game), but does the game have any interesting strategic elements as far as mmorpgs go? Thanks.
I’m a little concerned about the lack of items myself. Seems like one of the reasons to play an mmorpg is the accumulation of stuff. Surely you should be able to find a repulsor glove or jet boots or wonderful wand of Watoomb in your journeys. Is there even any talk of that being implemented?
What about vehicles? Any possibility of a Batmobile or Quinjet in the future?
I just got my first mission where I was granted a “temporary” power – “here, try out this cryo-gauntlet for us and tell you what you think.”
So I think there is some framework in place that could be used for items. That said, I don’t think there’s a need for it. I like getting cool stuff – I spent a couple of years rather addicted to Diablo II – but the point of the game seems to be to be expressly not about crafting or getting phat lewt. It’s about being a hero.
I like the feeling that my character is advancing. But I also like the feeling that everyone gets to advance more or less in the same way, choosing powers from your initial set and the power pool.
I’m happy with the way the game plays now. I hope the higher-level stuff is as cool as reported. I hope there are big world events that I can play a part in. I hope that I get to team up with other heroes and make a difference, even if it’s just taking out some Hellions who are snatching purses in Atlas Park. Because I like being a hero.
Also, technicnally, there -are- items… They’re just rare and not as item-y as one might think. For instance- my character went to Pandora’s Box (the shop that caters to magic-types and mutants) in Steel Canyon, and just picked up Lin Kuei’s candle and… Someone or other’s earings. They are both enhancements, just the same as ‘training: damage’ or ‘training: accuracy’. The candle is a healing enhancement for my healing powers, the earing increases damage on one of my attacks. What makes them different is that they are ‘dual origin’ enhancers (mutant and magic), and thus only work for those two types of characters. The enhancements are supposedly (and apparently) better than standard, generic training ones. Later on, there are Single Origin enhancers that are even better. These drop -very- rarely, and never until around level 15. I think in my entire time in beta, I’ve seen two drop, and both were for origins that I was not (they were both DNA resequencing, which, IIRC is ‘mutant’ and ‘science’ origins).
So, long story short, yes, there are items. Easiest way to get 'em is to buy 'em, but I’m betting at higher levels that may not be the case.
Hmm. You ask me the tough questions.
Let’s see if I can answer this. There’s strategic elements in making your character, for starters…some powers, for example, do DoT, some slow your opponent, some knock him down, some are just very accurate most of the time, and some refresh themselves almost instantly. Among the Tanker powerset, Super Strength, for example, does relatively little damage per punch as opposed to, say, Battle Axe, but Battle Axe takes longer time to use and use again. You’ve got to swing that thing an’ all.
And then there’s making a party – granted, you can have a group of all big huge hulking Tankers, but what do you do when you’ve got that blasted Tsoo Sorcerer teleporting all over the place? Either chase him or wish you had a ranged attacker, or have one person bang on another of the Sorcerer’s friends until he comes back to fix him up, and then dogpile the Sorcerer…
And that’s just fighting one particular sort of bad guy. There are tactics, and they’re more fun to fiddle with than any other MMORPG I remember. But then again, I’ve never been a huge MMORPG fan. I’ve always liked them, but ehh…this one, however, has really caught my attention.
For Priam and all else who still have CoH on the brain…
Yep, I’m going to pick up my copy Thursday (that is when it hits the shelves isn’t it?) and I definitely am interested in joining the Ignorance Fighters or what have you. Should we start an official roster or something. Actually, shouldn’t someone who is already in the game and knows from whence they speak start an official roster or something, and let the rest of us know how we handle meeting up?
We need a Hydrobase or Watchtower or something
This sounds great, and I’d love to join in, but I have a rather outdated computer. Anyone know the ‘minimum’ and ‘reccomended’ system requirements?
Any experiences like “I’m running XYZ and had horrible lag” or things like that?
Thanks.
I’ve got an 800 Mhz Pentium III running Win 98, and the beta worked peachy for me; it was the listed minimum for the beta.
Paragon City-
A representative of the Adams Academy of Arts and Science unveiled a closely held secret today: The school is the headquarters and training ground for a dedicated band of heroes. Their numbers and identities are still under wraps, but these humans and metahumans are dedicated to fighting the dark forces that threaten to wrap our fair city in a shroud of ignorance, superstition, and fear.
I’ve avoided MMORPGs so far, but this one is tempting me, particularly with the prospect of a Doper super-team.
Unfortunately, team bases aren’t in the first release of the game. Everyone in the pre-release forums was hoping that such things would be added in a later version, but Cryptic never quite said that this is being planned.
I’m so in, gonna have to pick up the game, is there some sorta roster someone is making?
My resolution to never again buy a MMORPG on opening day is fading fast…
OK since I dunno who else currently has the live version of the game, I’m just going to toss this out there.
Unless anyone can think of a good reason otherwise, consider Guardian server to be our new home. I’m currently working my character up to level 10, at which point I can form us a Super Team. Until then either post on this thread indicating your character name and type or e-mail my character in-game (The Fallen Saint - Level 7 Blaster). I will then network with you and give you any names you may be missing. It’ll be a pain until we can form up officially, but at least it’s something.
Sound good?
The Crusade against Ignorance has only just begun!
Okay, I’m gonna get CoH as soon as possible, do you think they’d have it at CompUSA today? I saw a message on the site saying the servers should be up 11pm CDT today, so does that mean the release copies are out?
When I get a copy I’ll be happy to meet with you Priam, no idea what name yet but hopefully “Ryle” or “Ryle Dup”
Servers have been up in a live state since the 25th allowing access for those who received a pre-order box with code, which is how I’ve been playing. According to what my e-mail said, the pre-order window does end sometime tonight or tommorow morning.
Yeah I read about the headstart thing just now, I checked all my local stores and none of em have it, maybe it’ll be in tomorrrow
Heres hoping I can get a copy and the servers will be up tomorrow.
I picked up my copy at BB on the way home tonight. The servers go live tonight at midnight so I may stay up long enough to create a character.
See y’all in Paragon City!
Alright, I think I’m gonna get the game tomorrow. I have a pre-order at EB, so I got a copy waitin’ for me!
Ok, so Guardian server, is it? Alright, look for me. I’m not sure what I’ll be (during the Beta, I was a blaster and tanker, liked blaster a lot, so probably that,) but my name will be Levinworth, unless that is taken.
