I’m probably gonna buy the serial code online, though I have it pre-ordered through EB. I already know pretty much how the game runs, so the instruction manual is fairly useless to me. Need to consider this a little further but until I get a retail code I’m locked out.
I tell a lie. I didn’t consider, just bought it online. I’ll get back to you in a few with an update about server conditions right now.
Right now the servers are running better than they were even over the past few days, but I put that down to their practically being deserted. The true test period will come this evening when all those people come home with their retail version in hand.
I’m taking a break because I’ve just died three times too often and its making me frustrated.
Oh, geez, I’ve been in the beta since March and I didn’t even think about looking for Dopers.
Virtue is the unofficial RP server, and I suggest we congregate there. I suspect people may find more congenial players over there in general. La Pucelle / Lift Lass over there.
I’d have to say CoH had the smoothest launch day I’ve ever seen for an MMORPG… well, until last night, when I found out that, even though I paid for the game weeks ago, I won’t be able to play until my copy is delivered by FedEx. That DEFINITELY could’ve been done better.
But I’m not bitter, dammit.
Anyway… Guardian server it is… With any luck, I’ll be, uh, Lightnin’. So how’re we going to get together? We really need Uncle Cecil to be our fearless leader, or somethin’.
E-Sabbath: With launch day coming upon us today, I wouldn’t hold my breath about unofficial stuff remaining true. I say we stick with Guardian server for now.
Lightnin’: Interesting idea. I think I’m gonna try to create an Uncle Cecil as we speak 
Yeah, but I’m already up to 8th level with my scrapper. 
Trust me, what happens is that the people who planned ahead will stick around, and it’ll have a more stable middle game with cooler people on a planned server.
Also… Guardian is the EU server. (I think Victory is UK) It’s going to be hell to team on it, with people on different time zones like that.
Yes, it’s unofficial, but if you spend a bit of time checking out their forum, and the people who you want to play with, will have, then you know where to go. Grab any forum… Warcry, CoH, Gamespy, and search for Virtue, it’ll pop up.
Y’all can argue that out as you like and I’ll abide by whatever, but my experience on planned servers is that it just ramps up the drama between larger guilds because it increases the sense of turf and rigidness. Just my experience, though.
Just piping in to say that, as a newbie to MMPORPGs, you guys are totally speaking Greek to me. Go easy on us…some of us are ignorant. Fight it!
Kay, Max. Take my post and point out the confusing bits?
Server: On each server is a world. People playing on one server can not have their characters meet with someone on another server. This becomes annoying when people have put time and effort into their characters on one server, and they have a friend on another. It’s the first choice you make when generating a character.
RP server. People have unoffically gotten together and said, hey, if we divide the servers up, it’ll be easier to find each other on them. Thus, all the people in the EU, if they have spent some small amount of time checking the CoH forums, will go to Guardian. Then they’ll find people playing at the same time they are… imagine trying to play on a server loaded for Japan? Everyone’ll be vanishing right when you want to go on a mission. One of the traditional server designations is RP. It’s for people who want to… you know, actually pretend they’re superheroes, as opposed to people who want to level their characters and kill things as fast as possible. There will be more people willing to be social on a RP server.
There will also be guilds. Guilds are organizations of players that look to help each other out in a game. If we all went in, we’d be a guild, if somewhat disorganized.
Any other questions? (Note, by the way, since there are no real items in CoH, guild negatives are mostly negated… there’s no camping or anything worth a darn, and no uber powerful gear.)
So then is it possible, after you’ve created your character and selected a server, to change servers at some point if you find all of your friends are on another?
EU=Europe? I feel totally a tool for not knowing that if it is. And if so, would UK not be part of it? Or is EU somehow the server for the US?
Yes, Max, you can change servers. It’s just that you’ll have to redesign your character and start over from scratch.
EU is short for the European Union. Nah. Victory, I think, is the United Kingdom server.
Just got my game from CompUSA, installing it right now.
I think I’m gonna be a scrapper or a tanker, not sure which. So is Guardian in Europe? Because I need to play on a US server so…
Anyways, I definately will not be on the unoffical RP server, (can’t stand roleplaying) so if Guardian is US I definately hope to meet some of you there!
Ryle: According to E-Sabbath it is a European server, which raises problems. Since its not an “official” RP server, I’m inclined to go with Virtue if only because we’ve got one member there nearing the level 10 needed to actually form a SuperTeam. What I am going to do is compose a new thread and link off it here with the details of the group and how to join up right now. Keep an eye out in a few minutes Suffice to say, don’t get TOO paranoid about the roleplaying thing.
Well it looks like I won’t be playing any time soon, my ATI Mobility 7500 is not supported and I’m a laptop so I can’t upgrade it, sigh, all the characters and things appear as blackish silhouettes, and everything is very dark, oh well… sigh.
