Since I’ve been here at the Dope I’ve started 4 or 5 Pit threads about other Dopers. Of those, I have asked for 3 of them to be closed because I too think pile-ons are ugly-- especially if the poster being pitted seems to be being attacked just for the sake of being attacked or if the reason for the pitting is cleared up.
I am not asking for this thread to be closed. Cllint was a jackass and is still a jackass and all the attacks against him are deserved. Plus, he’s enjoying himself. Jackasses like attention even if it is negative.
Never been out of the USA and Canada, true. Never been out of Kansas? Hardly. Besides, that’s irrelevant to this thread, anyway.

I can think of a number of opinions that would result in immediate banning. Nostalgia for the holocaust, say, or a call for the re-instatment of African slavery. Not that I’ve ever seen them anywhere on the boards.
In the context of an all-text message board, I’d say there’s precious little difference.
The situation is not nearly as black and white as you paint it. There are unpopular opinions, and there are unacceptable opinions. “Star Trek sucks” is an unpopular opinion, yet somehow I’ve yet to be banned. “It’s okay to kill Palestinian children because they’re just going to grow up to be terrorists” is an unacceptable opinion in civilized company, and I’m more than a little disappointed that Clint wasn’t immediately banned for it.
And I don’t have a problem with some opinions being unacceptable here. Most of what Clint “thinks” is so far off the social norm that he adds nothing to debate, and serves only to derail it by shifting attention from the matter at hand to his own reprehensible ideas. Not all opinions are equal, and not all opinions should be given equal time.
It’s depressing that this needs to be pointed out, but being called an asshole on the interent is not remotely comparable to being beaten by a mob.
At any rate, pile-ons don’t happen because the Dopers as a group sent blood in the water and attack a guy just 'cause everyone else is doing that. Pile-ons happen because somebody does something that offends a whole lot of people, and every one of them wants to get their two cents in. Every person in this thread is attacking Clint because they feel personally insulted by what he says. It’s not about being part of a mob: it’s precisely the opposite. Most of the people here would be responding the same way if they were the only person in this thread. The fact that the same things are being said over and over shows that there are a lot of people so angry about this guy that they simply have to express it to their face.
I completely agree, unless you’ve left a “not” out of that last sentence. 
Let’s not forget that there’s holding opinions that are unacceptable, and then there’s expressing opinions in an unacceptable manner. The latter will get you banned much, much faster than the former.
