As an attempt at civilized discussion I would opine that it is bad policy to close threads simply because they are not going the way the OP wants them to. Coldfire is a good mod and need not explain his reasons for closing a thread to me, or anyone else.
I would hope though that “the request of the OP” is not a magic bullet to get out of a mess of your own making. I actually agreed with IDBB and her ilk (though it pains me to admit it), but if people were offended there is no reason she should get a free pass to stop her own thread.
I would expect that if I stir up trouble with an OP that offends people I will need to stick around and face the music. I would not do as IDBB did and ask the thread to be closed just because I don’t like what some people think about it.
Ummm… in case you missed the bus here, that’s exactly what I’m arguing about… the fact that the conversation was cut short. I’d have argued until I was blue in the face, or definitively proved otherwise, but the thread was closed.

It’s been my experience that the Mods often don’t close threads just because the OP asks. If they do close a thread after being asked, it’s usually because they feel the thread has become moot or headed for a trainwreck.
Starting another You might be white trash if… thread = bad idea.
Starting a thread purely to discuss stereotypes = good idea.
Obviously, but to tell the truth, I’m not too shocked that you did miss my point. And dantheman’s point. And Diane’s point. But I wouldn’t worry if I were you. It was only there in really large letters telling you that you could start a new thread to continue the conversation, instead of bitching about a closed thread.

Okay, taking this away from the ever-fun game of “Who’s an Asshole,” I can see a damn good reason for closing the other thread. IDBB is a controversal poster; she has expressed some half-thought-out ideas, and she’s taken a lot of shit for them, including shit from me. I’m not gonna search her posts and tally up her hang-out forums, but it seems to me that recently, she has been avoiding the Pit in favor of MSPIMS and IMHO, forums where she doesn’t have to hear a litany of things that other posters think is wrong with her. I applaud this as it seems to be psychologically healthier.
She posts in MPSIMS; some posters take offense at her views; as the controversy has begun, there is no choice but to move the thread to the Pit, where the controversy heats up accordingly. And even though the topic shifted (to what, IMO, was an interesting discussion), even though she wasn’t even participating anymore, there was still the risk that someone would blow in and bring up the time IDBB went off half-cocked about her mother-in-law, or preppy teens or something. And, as she was the OP, it would be perfectly valid to do so.
Look, the saying goes, “If you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.” IDBB decided to get the hell out the kitchen, and it’s within her rights to do so. Now, if anyone wants to talk about the validity of using white-trash stereotypes, he or she can open a thread about it–without attacking IDBB. And if anyone wants to flame IDBB, he or she can Pit her (she, of course, can choose to ignore any thread).

You have one mod saying, ‘Hey, we’ll keep it open as long as it takes’ and then comments about how lessons need to be learned around here. When lessons aren’t apparently learned, and people begin questioning those that brought up the ‘This is wrong! Think about the children for god sakes!’ type posts, and it’s obviously headed into a different direction, the thread is suddenly closed ‘at the request of the OP’, when it wasn’t hours earlier… and a reasonable discussion was beginning to take place.
OK then, help me out. Outside of others telling me I’m an asshole, and why the other thread NEEDED to be closed, explain to me what their point is?
