In this thread, Serenata67 links directly to a specific post in another thread. What’s the code for doing this? I could play around, but I figure this is the easiest way to find out.
Click the little number directly to the left of the red exclamation point at the top of each post (ie #1). It will open a new window and you can copy that particular URL.
Or simply right click it [post number] and chose “copy link location” from the drop-down menu…
There are two ways to link to a post:
[post=2105600]and this way[/post]
The first way you would do by right-clicking on the post number and saying “copy link location”, as mentioned by RedFury. Then use the link with the tag. If you do this, the link will bring you to a page with the post all by itself.
The second method is superior in my opinion, because it brings you to a page showing the post at the top of a page that also shows the entire thread. The second method uses the [post] tag. To use this second method, you pull out the post number from the link you got by right-clicking on the post number and saying “copy link location”. Then you put “post=” in front of the post number.
e.g. I right-click on the post number, copy the link, and get this after pasting:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=2105600&postcount=28
The post number is the number after “?p=”, in this case 2105600
To use the [post] tag with this post number, I would type in something like this
[post=2105600]This is a much better way of linking to a post[/post]
and it will show up like this
[post=2105600]This is a much better way of linking to a post[/post]
With the vB upgrade, there’s actually an easier way of doing Arnold’s second method without using the [post] tag and hunting down the post number.
1.) Click on the post number as explained by everyone else in the thread.
2.) When that new screen comes up, you’ll see a clickable “Thread” line at the top, right-hand corner. Click on that URL and it will take you back to the thread with that specific post at the top of the screen (what Arnold just described).
3.) Copy the brand-new URL in your address bar and use that in your post.
Actually, if you really really want the easiest way of coding in general, if using Firefox, you can hardly go wrong with these two extensions:
They both appear on your right-click menu, are self-explanatory and do all the coding for you.
PD-In the case that occupies us here, you’d simply right-click, do the “copy link location,” highlight any text in your message that you want to link to that post (or write your own) and then right-click again to find “BBCode” –> “clipboard” –> “make selection URL” and voilà! takes you right back to my last post.
This way is easy enough for a luddite like me – thanks!
