College Football 2022

Michigan won, and that’s all I have to say about that.

because my heart stopped several times, and I need to conserve the breath.

Yes, thank goodness. As upsetting as it would be, I could at least live with losing to Ohio State next week since we would be undefeated as hoping to be and Ohio State is a very difficult opponent.

I was really hoping Baylor and Illionois would have knocked off the undefeateds leading late. But it was pretty goddamn predictable endings to both those games.

Shit.

Watching USC v UCLA

Gus Johnson’s suit, PERFECT for radio!

Oh! Oh! Targeting!

Targeting with his dick!

DTR cryin’ again! Love it! Looks like I got something to do Dec 2nd.

That was a helluva game. So nice to see both home jerseys on the field. Nothing prettier… (well, that’s just hyperbole).

I don’t think that’s what “leading with the crown of the helmet” is supposed to mean.

Tennessee got annihilated by four-loss South Carolina, and there goes their chances of making it to the CFP after such a promising start.

CFP still very much up in the air, after Georgia and the Ohio State/Michigan winner (assuming that the winner wins the B10 championship game.) Will LSU make it if they beat Georgia. Does the loser of Ohio State/Michigan get in? How about USC?

I’m predicting that TCU will lose to Kansas State in the B12 championship game and not make the CFP.

Bowl Eligibility Update for 11/20 (the 40th anniversary of “The Play” - the five-lateral touchdown with a possible assist from the Stanford band at the end of the 1982 Cal-Stanford game):

There are 82 bowl openings, and 75 spots taken (including the Ball State-Miami Ohio and Appalachian State-Georgia Southern winners)

* indicates a 5-win team
Numbers indicate four-year APR, followed by one-year APR when needed to break a tie

  1. * Rice (994), 5-6
  2. Iowa State (986), 4-7
  3. UNLV (984), 4-7
  4. Virginia (983/1000), 3-7 plus a canceled game against Coastal Carolina
  5. * Michigan State (983/993), 5-6
  6. * Auburn (983/983), 5-6
  7. * Missouri (983/974), 5-6
  8. * Miami (982), 5-6
  9. Army (980), 3-6 (plus a second FCS win) with 2 games remaining
  10. * Georgia Tech (979), 5-6
  11. * Miami Ohio (977/987), 5-6

After this, it would require a 5-7 team to decline a bowl bid:

  1. Rutgers (977/978), 4-7
  2. Indiana (976), 4-7
  3. Georgia State (974/987), 4-7
  4. * West Virginia (974/971), 5-6

“How can Virginia get in?” If it beats Virginia Tech and cannot reschedule its game against Coastal Carolina, it can ask the NCAA for a waiver to be treated as a 5-7 team in light of the circumstances that led the game to be canceled

Also note that Buffalo and New Mexico State can ask the NCAA for a waiver to be bowl eligible if they finish 5-6 and cannot reschedule their postponed games

The NCAA has granted bowl eligibility waivers in the past; UCLA got one when it finished its regular season 6-6 but lost the Pac-12 championship game
(this prompted the NCAA to add the “conference championship game losses aren’t counted in bowl eligibility” rule to the bylaws)

Besides Ball State, Miami Ohio, Appalachian State, and Georgia Southern, these teams can also reach 6 wins:

Alabama-Birmingham
Buffalo (which also has a postponed game against Akron; it only needs one win)
Florida Atlantic
Louisiana
New Mexico State (which has a postponed game against San Jose State; it needs two wins)
Southern Mississippi
UTEP
Vanderbilt
West Virginia

Note that all of this assumes three things:

(a) Central Connecticut gave out enough scholarships in the past two seasons for Connecticut’s win against it to count
This only matters if there are 82 bowl eligible teams besides Connecticut; otherwise, count it anyway.
(Note that this rule does not apply to teams with two FCS wins. It used to, until 2017. A 6-6 team with two FCS wins is considered to be 5-6.)

(b) Wins against James Madison count as “FBS wins”
If they don’t, then Marshall needs to win its final game to be bowl eligible, and Georgia Southern cannot make it.

(c) James Madison is not considered to be in its “final year of transition to FBS”
If it is, then it is put just ahead of the 5-win teams (and behind Connecticut, if (a) applies).
However, you would think that James Madison would have said something in public if it was considering asking for bowl eligibility.

They cannot get to six. You have the wrong record. I didn’t check your others for mistakes, but this one stood out.

I missed the edit window…
Add Ball State at 5-6 below West Virginia, and remove West Virginia from the “they can reach 6 wins” list.

Lane Kiffin to Auburn is getting a little spicy on Twitter tonight.

There’s enough smoke there to convince me he’s going to Auburn.

Virginia and Virginia Tech have now mutually agreed to cancel their game against one another. So both their seasons are officially over.

A fun article on ESPN today, on what I’ve always found to be a fascinating tradition: the helmet stickers on Michigan’s and Ohio State’s football helmets.

I’ve always been amused by the college football helmets that look like a player wasn’t vigilant enough and let my 8-year-old daughter cover it in stickers.

I’ve always thought that the Cincinnati Bengals’ helmets look like they were left alone in a room with a 5-year-old, who was armed with a black Sharpie.

Even as a youngster I always wondered why Ohio State had stickers of marijuana leaves on their helmets.

They do have a bit of a Lisa Frank vibe to them.

I wish Lane Kiffin would get hit by a bus.
