My team’s season just got worse with the passing of Larry Munson, the voice of the Georgia Bulldogs. RIP. Damn good Dawg.
I’m a big Razorbacks fan, and I agree. They’ve been over-ranked pretty much all year. What they have is a truly monstrous juggernaut of an offense and not much else. Their Strength of Schedule is 65th, I think (none of the Top 10 have even a Top 20 SoS, though). There’s several 1 and even 2-loss teams that could kick their ass tomorrow. However, with that offense, they’re never out of a game, and they’ve come from way behind several times this year. I don’t think they’re going to beat LSU, though it might happen.
Yeah, That’s right ! I’m razorbacks fan too
Mark Twain Quotes
How do you feel about the other sports? I think the Big 10 is a little better in basketball than in football, how do you think you’ll do there? You’ll probably rule in baseball. And why don’t you get a hockey team together? The Big 10 hockey conference will be coming soon, you’re welcome to join the party.
Starting to get excited about the Big Game. My brain hasn’t quite accepted that last day of work != day before Saturday.
I hope Hoke can end the cheat’s streak this year.
There are other sports?
I would say Volleyball has the 2nd-biggest following (due to all of Nebraska’s beaches), and just clinched the Big Ten. Not bad for a conference with 4 top ten teams including powerhouse Penn State. We’re now #2 in the nation.
Baseball had a nice run in the early 00s, with multple College World Series appearances in Omaha. And this was with the warm-weather Texas schools. But things have tapered off. I suppose it’s better without having to play them anymore. Darin Erstad is our new coach, so that adds a little excitement.
Basketball? It’s like asking a Duke or Indiana fan about their football team. We just don’t take it that seriously. We’ll sell out when Kansas or Texas comes to town, celebrate the (very) occasional upset, and then lose next week to Maryland-Eastern Shore. NU usually finished in the bottom half of the Big 8 and then Big XII, and probably will do the same in the Big 10. Raised in the Big Eight, I actually followed Kansas more in hoops.
Hockey? Nope. But our Omaha campus has hockey and played in the CCHA with the Michigan schools.
Nebraska does well in other sports, from gymnastics to wrestling to track (esp indoor). We were usually #2 to Texas if we take the aggregate of all sports. I’d imagine that trend would continue in the Big Ten. But football not only drives the bus, it is the bus, the stops, and all the roads.
We joined due to our football team*, and that’s how we’ll judge our Big Ten entry. While I wish there was more consistency, we seem to be one of the top tier Big Ten teams. And check this out: last year, we lose 3 games in-conference, win our division, and we go to the Holiday Bowl. This year: 3 losses, no division title, but we (likely) go to the Capital One Bowl on January 1st! We’re going to like it here.
*I’m not sure what happened with that AAU status. Something about our medical school being in Omaha, rather than on-campus? Perhaps I’m oversimplifying things, but if we’re lacking something else, my attitude is “How do we get back into the AAU? Okay, then fix it. Now.”
I hear more and more sports heads saying that if Michigan wins they will get a B[sub]c[/sub]S invite. I know it makes me a shitty fan, but I would rather they not get one. Don’t get me wrong, nothing would make me want to lose to Ohio, so if that’s the price of things, that’s the price, but I don’t think they are ready for that yet, another creaming against a top tier team would hurt over the summer. A good matchup against a second tier team(which I consider Michigan to be also) would give them a good chance for confidence starting next year. And next year has a chance to be a very good year, as they start with Alabama, so everything they want is in their own hands.
I understand that way of thinking. I have a work buddy who is a HUGE Virginia Tech fan. The *last *thing he wants is for Tech to somehow slip into the NC game. He knows they will be annihilated, and what fan wants that?
Emotionally hedging your bets before the game? Not a bad idea, actually.

I love bashing the SEC, but after seeing what LSU did to Arkansas yesterday, I can’t think of any team that’s looking forward to meeting them in the BCS.
ETA: I’m mildly stoked that my Bears ended the season strong, winning 3 of their last 4 and looking good in the loss; and upgrading their bowl assignment from probably the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl to something much more prestigious, like the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl, or (dare we hope) Holiday Bowl.
Unless LSU loses the SEC Championship, we got some clarity in the muddy BCS picture the last two days. LSU thumped Arkansas and Bama dominated Auburn.
It looks like Bama will get their re-match against LSU in the BCS game. In New Orleans.
The door was wide open for Oregon, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Stanford even Clemson, but each team trip over the threshold.
I think Trent Richardson locked up the Heisman trophy today. He had a incredible day. … Unless Luck has an incredible game against Notre Dame tonight.
Illinois started 6-0, and finished 6-6 (losing to a bad Minnesota team) and, although ESPN claims they are bowl eligible, won’t be going to a bowl because one of the 6 wins was against a 1-AA team. The defense is very good and the offense is very bad. We should improve next year as we get most of our defensive starters back. But any improvement is greatly subject to recruiting, of course.
What do you think Zook’s chances are?
According to wiki, you are allowed one win against an FCS team (with a disclaimer).
Wisconsin’s Montee Ball has had a better season. He’s rushed for almost 200 more yards in fewer carries. He’s also scored 29 rushing TD’s vs. Richardson’s 20. Ball’s 34 total TD’s is second in NCAA history, behind only Barry Sander’s 39 for OK St. in 1988.
Ball’s problem is that all the hype early in the season went to his teammate Russel Wilson, so Ball hasn’t been on the radar until just recently.
Ah. That must be a recent change. Illinois shouldn’t get a bowl anyway, not after losing to Minnesota.
I noticed an interesting anomoly with UCLA. They are 6-5 right now before they play USC tonight. Even with a loss tonight they should be bowl eligible with their 6 wins. BUT because of USC’s post season ban, UCLA has already wrapped up their division and will play Oregon next week in the PAC-10 championship game. Unforetunately the rules state that you can’t be bowl eligible with a losing record so if UCLA loses tonight and next week they’ll finish 6-7 and no bowl! They’re basically looking at being punished for winning their division.
According to this article (with rule citation), UCLA could petition to get a waiver because the PAC-12 has 7 bowl commitments but only 6 bowl-eligible teams (USC is still suspended).
Gamecocks 34, Clemson 13. Sweet!
