College football fans: how's your team look? -- 2011 Version

Tough shit for them. Win more games. And don’t wear all white against USC. I was looking forward to turning this on and seeing the cardinal and gold against baby blue and gold.

For those bringing up LSU vs UGA in the SECCG, it looks like it doesn’t matter what happens in that game, LSU is going to be playing for their third crystal ball (all in New Orleans, BTW).

And don’t be so fast to assume Bama is in the game. If Okie St beats OU, they likely will be LSU’s opponent. Okie St is already ahead of Bama in the computers (and will extend their lead next week). They only need 25% of the #2 votes among the human folk and they will be in NOLA. The talk is all Bama now, but that will change if State takes care of business.

As an LSU fan, I’m hoping that happens. Not only because I think another team deserves a shot to do what Bama couldn’t (at home, even), but I also think Bama is the ONLY team that has a chance to beat LSU. Well, that, and tickets to the NCG will be cheaper if OSU goes.

Well it looks like according to most predictors Michigan either doesn’t make the BCS, or they make the Sugar bowl against Houston. That’s a better situation than I expected. No disrepect to Houston(okay, I’ll be honest, a moderate amount of disrespect to Houston). That is a much easier matchup than the Capital one bowl. That might be a lot of fun

That can only happen if my Spartans get stiffed by the BCS. If MSU beats Wisconsin, then MSU and Wisconsin both get BCS bowls. If Wisconsin wins, then Michigan may very well get the 2nd BCS because they would put more fannies in the seats. U-M did beat Nebraska and Notre Dame, the two teams that beat MSU. But MSU beat Wisconsin, whom Michigan didn’t play, beat Iowa , whom Michigan lost to, shut down OSU in Columbus, and won the head to head with Michigan. Yet Michigan may wind up with the BCS invite simply because they’re the “name” school.

That being said, the best thing to do about the situation is head down to Indy and paste Wisconsin.

The loser of the Big Ten Championship game (Wisconsin or MSU) is not going to a BCS bowl because they would have 3 losses and be knocked out of the top 14 of the BCS rankings. It has nothing to do with who beat who or which team has the better “name.” Yes, MSU beat Michigan but if they lose the championship they will no longer be ranked in the top 14 and be eligible for a BCS at-large berth. Same for Wisky. If they win, there are no problems.

This is one of the things that the Big Ten fans have to get used to now that it has a conference championship game. Does is hurt to possibly see a bitter rival move ahead because they play one less game? Sure. But next year it might be MSU benefiting from the setup. Stanford and Alabama will benefit from it this year as well, so it is not just Michigan.

IMO, it is not about who they beat, or who beat them, it is how many they lost. Michigan only has 2 losses, and that will be one less than either Wisky or Sparty. They will get the 2nd BCS bid over either team.
edit: what Wolverine said
Going to the Championship with a good record is not a guarantee of BCS bowl. UGA only goes to a BCS game if they beat LSU. A loss means to a lesser bowl. (I don’t even want to think about how UCLA’s is in the PAC12 Championship game.)

Wolverine: what you will also see with a Championship game is that the Big 10 winner Schedule strength gets better with a 13th game.

IIRC, the computer rely considerably on SoS when doing its calculations. And the SoS is additive, not averaged. A 13th game can only help the winner.

At least it’s just a one year problem (most likely). Last night, the announcers during the USC game pointed out that 20 of their starters are non-seniors. Their 3 starting LBs are freshmen. If Barkley comes back, they sure look to be coming back to their old standards pretty quickly.

Oh come on. It’s not even about how many they lost, let alone who beat whom. It’s about which of the teams eligible to play in my bowl game will result in the highest television ratings and ticket sales. It’s not about the better record, or the stronger team. It’s about money. That’s all the BCS has ever been about. If anyone in a decision-making capacity cared about fairness or athletic contests there’d be a playoff instead of the current insane system.

In the meantime, Michigan will be always be chosen over Michigan State because the Wolverines will draw more eyes on the game, regardless of who has the better team.

IMO, there is more money to be made from a 8 team playoff system than the current BCS 2 team playoff.

I’m not sure there is. For TV probably. But The Bowls them selves and the city they are in make a shit ton of money for bodies in the town and in the seats. Some people will travel to three rounds of playoffs, but a lot of people don’t have that kind of money or time, and lose perspective on their own team. A lot People will save their money to go to the championship game, even if their team has no shot at it. With the current set up and every team has only one more game no matter, they are going pull out their credit cards and go.

There may be, but it wouldn’t be made by the same people.

I didn’t watch the game (and I made sure to stay well away from Cville yesterday), but it doesn’t look like that went so well. I don’t know beans about football, but I think that UVAers can still be happy with a stronger than expected season with a still new coach.

…aaaand Texas Tech is out of bowl eligibility. Injuries have taken their toll. We looked good for a while there against Baylor, especially when they started making mistakes, and then we promptly starting making more.

Tech had been bowl-eligible for 18 straight seasons, the longest streak in the Big 12. Well, so much for that. Mike Leach is probably laughing his ass off right now.

Bowl game time!

Hopefully I will be able to scrape the cash/air miles together to go watch the Commodores. Of course, once again, it is going to be the Music City Bowl, so I won’t get to see a new city. But Nashville strikes me as a pretty good place to spend New Year’s Eve once again,

That was pretty. Fight On!

What the hell happened in that game? I know SC is very good, and UCLA is very not so much…but still. Did they totally fold up and phone it in?

Meanwhile, in other Pac-12 news: Wazzu just hired Mike Leach.

It turns out that Cal next year will face Urban Meyer, Rich Rodriguez and Mike Leach*. I expect ASU and UCLA to reanimate Knute Rockne and Bear Bryant to fill their vacancies.
*actually, given the new Pac scheduling, we will miss one or more of the Oregons, Washingtons and Arizonas, so this may not be true.

Anyone know how FOX got the TV rights to the PAC12 Championship and B1G Championship games after not televising any NCAA football games all season?

Well, screw me for giving up on the NIU Huskies. I turned that game off after watching the travesty of a first half, with Ohio up 20-0. I guess they were just spotting them some points to make it interesting. :stuck_out_tongue: (Not my team per se, but the closest Div I school to my hometown, and my sister’s alma mater. And my father used to be part of the broadcast team for their games before he retired. So I still kinda follow them …)

Okie State is doing their best to impress the voters. but I don’t think they will make a dent. Can’t believe this team lost to Iowa State a few weeks ago.

Kinda of glad Houston won.

Georgia looked good for the first 30 minutes. Then Reality kicked in the door.

I didn’t think Clemson would win.

LSU will have beaten three BCS teams (WVa, Ore, Bama), and possibly a 4th one (Ark) if they would allow more than two teams from a conference.

Houston and OU losing means Michigan will get a BCS bid. (I think) TCU (or Boise?) as well?

TCU, I think Baylor just scored again from the first game of the season.

BCS Bama vs LSU (SEC whiners unite)
Rose Oregon vs B1G winner (looking like Sparty)
Sugar Michigan vs TCU (or Boise)
Orange Clemson vs WVA
Fiesta Stanford vs Ok State

As much as I didn’t want a rematch, I think LSU and Bama are the two best teams, by far.

BCS is going to get it right. IMO
