DS, talking about the OkSt vs Tulsa game? It started at 12:15 AM local time. Say that out loud. the game started at 12;15 am!
Yep. Glad I didn’t make the drive over, though I found out I could have gotten in free for the actual game. Would have gotten home after 4, and I just crashed and burned after a long day at about 2.
Well, I think I called it. The running game was absent, the defense played it’s heart out but gave up the late score, EJ Manuel was still inconsistent and is now hurt and questionable for next week, and the receiving corps is proving very fragile with now three starters out. Another tough one coming up at Death Valley against a tougher-than-expected Clemson.
The drop to 11 in the AP Poll surprised me a bit, we hung with the number 1 team in the country for 55 minutes and didn’t lose big. I expected us to be 9 or 10 in the new poll. Jimbo said it best last night, we have simply got to find a running game somewhere or EJ/Trickett are going to take a beating this year.
Still, can’t say I’m terribly disappointed, I figured we were going to lose this game. As I said before, we just need to not lose any more.
On the plus side, the excitement is certainly back. That stadium was rocking last night. Good to see FSU back in the spotlight after a bad 7-10 years.
Zakalwe, the bits of FSU-OU that I saw (watching the Canes game obviously) was some of the hardest hitting I’ve seen in a long, long time by both sides. OU looks like they might finally have a defense that can hang with an SEC team should they play in New Orleans for the BCS title. I didn’t see Clemson yesterday, but it sounds like they were really good. FSU-Clemson looks like a big one.
Miami finally played a smart game yesterday. The 8+ minute drive to end the game with a touchdown was beautiful. 14 plays, 8:48 minutes, 69 yards…awesome. Just 5 penalties. Lamar Miller is a f’ing man. Now we need to follow it up with a win against KSU next week. We’ve seen wins the past few years (VPI in '08, OU in '09 specifically) where we think it’s what will finally get Miami to turn the corner, only to follow-up soon after with a L. Beat KSU next week, and then it’s I-AA Bethune Cookman before going to Blacksburg.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you your 3 and 0 Vanderbilt Commodores.
Of course, with the next two weeks being at the Gamecocks and at Bama, this might change in a major fashion. But now if we can beat Army, Kentucky & Wake Forest, we’ll be bowl eligible.
Don’t give them to me, I don’t want them. I already have the 3-0 University of Illinois Fighting Illini; which is about as tentative a 3-0 as you can get. I have tickets to the Ohio St. game on October 15th, which is now looking very interesting.
I won’t get too excited about the 3-0 Longhorns, because they haven’t played anybody good (UCLA looked overmatched) yet. I stil don’t see them beating Oklahoma, and they’ll have a hard time topping Oklahoma State or A & M.
But Case McCoy is a HUGE step up from Garrett Gilbert, and apart from Oklahoma, there’s nobody on the schedule they CAN’T beat.
So, the way I figure it… they’ll definitely lose to the Sooners, they’ll probably lose to EITHER the Cowboys or the Aggies, and then… they’ll find a way to blow one winnable game (Missouri, maybe).
So, I’ll say they go 9-3 and take a trip to the Holiday Bowl.
As for Notre Dame… I give up. They have more talent than I expected, but they’re KILLNG themselves with dumb turnovers (they even made a bunch against Michigan State). It wouldn’t surprise me if they win the rest of their games and end up getting stomped 56-3 in a BCS bowl… but it also wouldn’t surprise me if they keep shooting themselves in the foot and end up 6-6.
Nebraska’s 3-0. Struggled against a couple of cupcakes, where our offense looked anemic. Husker fans wondering if we’re a tad overrated going into our Big Ten schedule. Our coach spends more times concocting temper tantrums than trying to develop an offense. It’s starting to look like that story hasn’t changed.
Then, wham! 44-17 over Washington during the meat of the game. True, they called off the dogs a little early to make it 51-38, but the outcome wasn’t really in doubt*. I was very pleased with our offense, and we might come out of this okay.
We play AT Wyoming next weekend. How did they pull that off? After that, it’s the trip to Madison, a baptism by fire in our new conference.
- PS: Yes, Washington fans, there were some strange calls by the refs. It was kind of surreal, as most times the refs have it in for us (Penn St '82, Florida St '93, and Texas '09). It felt weird being a beneficiary of bad calls.
I don’t know if it received much attention nationally, but with the win over Presbyterian College*, Jeff Tedford became the winningest coach in Cal football history (75 wins).
The previous mark was held for 80+ years by Andrew Latham Smith. Andy Smith guided the Bears to undefeated seasons from 1920-1924, including 3 national championships**. He died quite young, or I’m sure his record would still stand for quite a while.
*seriously. Due to playing this season in AT&T Park, the Bears had to scramble to fill their schedule.
**granted, that national championships were fuzzily defined in the 20s.
I know that Cal is renovating Memorial Stadium, but why would that affect them and their scheduling for this year? Did a team back out because they didn’t want to play in a baseball stadium?
Cal had to wait for the Giants to finalize their schedule, and for the Pac-12 to release its new schedule.
Oh, right. :smack:
So. Damn. True.
Decent win for the Illini. Nice 4-minute offense, but we should have blown these guys out. That Carder kid is impressive and Jordan White would look good in Bears uni, but this close game is a let down after last week.
Here’s to the Illini going 4-0 for the first time since 1951.
No words. Just. No. Words.
Okay, some words. If we can’t figure out how to run the ball, we will lose another 3-4 games and possibly put our bowl streak in jeopardy. Trickett did well, but no one can win with a one-dimensional offense.
Ga Tech is 4-0 and the march is on to a BCS Bowl! Offense looks pretty potent. Defense? Don’t want to talk about it. For the first time this season, we did not score a TD on the first offensive play from scrimmage. (but it was a first down!)
The Minnesota Golden Gopher fans are deep in hiding at this point. Losses to USC (good loss on the road) and home losses to New Mexico State and FCS North Dakota State tonight.
Next week the Big Ten schedule starts. Oy.
Yeah, and at Michigan, no less.
Did anyone watch Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma St. today? A&M was down 30-27 with 2:20 left and didn’t try an onside kick. The A&M coach was apparently worried about field position, but they needed a 3-and-out regardless of field position. With 2:20 left, it makes no difference if OK St. has possession at midfield or at their own 20-yard-line, if they get a couple of first downs, the game is over. At least with an onside attempt, you have a chance of taking possession of the ball. A&M did have 3 timeouts available, but I think that was a poor decision.
Michigan is 4-0 for the first time since…last year… and the year before.
And neither of those turned out particularly well so I’m holding my hopes realistic.Next two games are very winnable , so they could be 6-0 without a real test.
After that the Hoke era really starts and we can see if he’s got the winner’s touch, or if it’s more of the same. But still some gaping holes on D and and the same old offense of “dick around for a bit then just have Denard make something happen”
Cal fans expected our team to have a great defense (just based on incoming recruits from the past 2 classes) front 7, questions in the secondary and on offense. We expected close, low scoring games.
We’re getting close, high scoring games. The offense is surprisingly good, with probably the best WR tandem in the Pac-12 in Keenan Allen and Marvin Jones. But the front 7 is getting no pressure and the secondary is awful. Matt Barkley and Andrew Luck can play in shorts and flip-flops against us, and throw for 400+ yards.
