College Football November and early December 2009

Predictions I’ve seen have Boise going to the Fiesta and TCU to the Orange. Which makes sense; the fan bases for each are unproven or not perceived as strong, so send them as close as possible.
We were sooooooooooooooooooooo close yesterday to having complete BCS chaos. I wish that each of the one-point games had gone the other way. 'Bama v TCU in the Championship would have been interesting; with Cincy and Texas losing, could have sent Boise almost anywhere as the odd-man out team.

If only there had been just a little more air under that last Texas pass… Oh well. Now I’ve got two despised teams in the final. I guess I’ll root for Texas only because they’re not it the SEC and they don’t have two former Spartan coaches on the sidelines. My dream bowl results- Big Ten wins all, SEC loses all.

So we get another crappy ‘national championship’ for teams people THINK are best, simply because they were ranked that way ahead of the season. Sure, Alabama is probably the best team in the country, but number 2 is a toss up, and frankly, the only reason Texas is ahead is because they’re Texas, not because they deserve to be. (Not that Texas might not be the second best or even the best…just that it’s certainly not clear cut).

As with most years, the ‘national champion’ will be a joke championship. I love college football GAMES, but I just can’t get any interest in college football as a whole because it’s a glorified beauty pageant at the end. I hate it. You’ve got FIVE undefeated teams this year, and only two get to play for the title? So basically, TCU, Cincinnati, and Boise all were eliminated from national championship contention before the season even began, and that’s simply unforgivable.

ESPN reported this morning

Oregon/OhSU
Fiesta TCU/BSU
Sugar UF/UC
Orange GT/Iowa
BCS Bama/Tex

If this scenario pans out, the two “flies in the ointment” play each other, and the winner will not get the respect that it desperately wants. They still don’t beat an “established” BCS team

Nope, he needs to learn a lesson from Tom Hanks: Are you crying?! THERE’S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!

That really sucks. I’d love to see TCU play Florida. I think Boise St is the weakest of the Little 3.

Exactly. Football’s a man’s game. There are players on the field who get bones shattered without crying. And poor widdle Timmy is going to cry because he doesn’t get to go for a third National Championship? Give me a frickin’ break. Get some perspective and grow some balls.

Their schedules suck. Hawaii did it a couple times. They played creampuff schedules and declared them selves champions. Then got in a bowl and got exposed as frauds. I want Cincy and Boise to get games against good teams in the bowls.
The BCS encourages teams to schedule weakly. It is even better for a big time program to do it. Who can complain if Michigan, Notre Dame or Texas gets a bowl with a clean record against crappy non conference opponents? The BCS should be trashed.

The BCS came in 1998. Before then, Michigan played non conference games with Colorado, Noter Dame, Texas, Texas A & M, Baylor, Alabama, UCLA and teams like that. Now they add Bowling Green, Massachusetts, Delaware State, Eastern and Western Michigan, Appalachian State and teams like that. They still charge full price.

Hey, that was a good game.

It was a litmus game. it showed them they need to get serious and make some changes. It was also a freak.

In addition to the BCS being a joke, the Gator Bowl is trying like hell to pick Florida State to host Bobby Bowden’s last game.

Never mind that Florida State is only 6-6 and four other ACC teams are ranked higher than them. If they are going to continue to let these private entities run the bowls, they should at least insist that they select the teams in order. The Gator Bowl is one notch below the BCS bowls. In my opinion, a .500 team should not be eligible for a bowl, let alone in a marquee one.

Part I- I agree, Clemson should be going to the Gator Bowl

But I do disagreee with Part II.

Reason #1, the kids worked all year long. Starting in August with “Two-a-Days”, lifting wieghts all years long, watching film etc. They deserve a holiday after a long season.

Reason #2, Its an opportunity to see some BCS schools play other BCS schools rather than the cupcake OOC matchups we see all year long. I am interested in see a Minnesota play a Missouri, not for the game itself, but to see who wins. Its games that are seldom seen otherwise. Or a Boston College play California.

Sugar: Florida v. Cincinatti
Rose: Oregon v. Ohio State
Fiesta: TCU v. Boise State
Orange: Georgia Tech v. Iowa
BCS: Texas v. Bama
My picks to win are listed 1st. And huzzah to the BCS for matching up the non-AQ schools against each other. Would hate to see a BCS school get beat by the peons. I think TCU and BSU can order victory shirts for this game that say co-national champs. TCU/Florida and BSU/Cincy would have been great matchups.

I’ll take Cincy (due to Florida apathy), Ohio State, Boise State, Georgia Tech, and… hmm… Texas.

Computer Polls…Top 3

Anderson/Hester…Bama, Cincy, Tex
Billingsley…Bama,Tex,Florida
Colley…Bama,Tex,Cincy
Massey…Bama,Florida,Cincy
Sagarin…Bama,Florida,Cincy
Wolfe…Bama,Cincy,Tex

2 computers picked a Bama/Florida rematch, 2 computer picked Bama/Tex, and two picked Bama/Cincy.

Here is how the computer shook out for the top 10

Bama
Cincy
Texas
Florida
TCU
Boise/Oregon Tie
Georgia Tech
LSU
Iowa

Sagarin hates Ohio State and Penn St. OhSU was 23rd and Penn St was not even in the top 25. Massey did not rank Penn St either.

I can’t stand that TCU and Boise are paired…I know that’s a good matchup, but it seems like a cowards matchup, with none of the bowls wanting to see a good BCS team get beaten by a little guy. God forbid people question the BCS system. What a joke. Oh, and if Cinci blows out Florida, they have just as much claim to the national title as anyone else. As will the TCU/Boise winner. College football ticks me off. What could be so great is instead a farce.

I totally agree with this. What are we supposed to learn from a TCU-BSU game?

I agree that TCU-Boise St was a copout. David can’t knock off Goliath if David has to play another David.

Should have been Cincy vs TCU and Florida vs Boise State.

But the bowls wanted to avoid:

  1. Boise State beating Florida, which would have looked incredibly bad for the BCS.

  2. The Cincy/TCU winner would have basically been a co-champion.
