comfort food

Just curious. What are some of people’s favorite comfort foods?

Green Grass Cookies!

The favourites: Buttered toast and jam, tamari roasted almonds, dried fruit, cherries, garlic pistachios, grilled cheese sandwiches (extra-sharp aged cheddar only) and lentil soup. Not necessarily all at once, mind you.

I’m also capable of chowing down large portions of Indian food but that’s a lot more expensive and so not as common.

Wouldn’t you rather have special brownies???

oreos, twinkies, devil dogs, and junior mints

This sounds like more of an IMHO thread to me.

As to comfort foods, a beloved childhood food most often will meet this definition. For me, one of my all time favorites are tacos. I love 'em and make them in several styles. I have liked tacos all of my life, even as a child they were a prefered food. Danish licorice is another item that heads the list. Roast turkey is always a good candidate as it reminds many of the holidays. As you can see, this is a highly subjective concept. Here is a list of my favorites:

[li] Tacos[/li][li] Danish Licorice[/li][li] BLT sandwiches[/li][li] Egg and tomato sandwiches[/li][li] Vegetable beef soup with a dollop of sour cream[/li][li] Chicken noodle soup[/li][li] Danish pancakes[/li][li] Toasted cheese sandwiches[/li][li] Fried mashed potato patties[/li][li] Li’l Smokie sausages[/li][li] Hash browns[/li][li] English muffins (Thomas’)[/li][li] Poached eggs on toast[/li][li] Avocados with Mayonnaise[/li][li] Butterhorns[/li][li] Blood oranges[/li][li] Chicken or cheese flautas[/li][li] Bagels and lox with cream cheese[/li][li] Laughing Cow cheese cubes[/li]I’ll remember a few more as soon as I hit the “Submit Reply” button.

fried potatoes (no onions)
beef and noodles (must be noodles made by mom)
Kraft macaroni and cheese (sprials only; must be slightly undercooked)
grilled cheese (must be made by dad and cut into 4 triangles)

Could you guess that I was a picky eater as a child?

I guess comfort food is sort of a nostalgia thing too.
Last night I went to a diner and had a chocolate egg cream.
It brought me back to being about 7 or 8 years old and going to a soda fountain around the corner from my house when I was a kid. On the other hand they are also foods that make you feel warm and safe when you feel shitty for whatever reason. Some of mine are roast turkey with stuffing, roast beef with baked potatoes and gravy and lots of desserts and confections like ice cream sodas and cheesecake.

This is an IMHO rather than a GQ, so I’ll move it.

any kind of chocolate!

Alphagetti (a very disgusting food, but makes me feel like a kid)
Boiled Eggs
Toast with Honey

Real mashed potatoes; forget that instant stuff, yech!

ummmm… my fingers? (i nibble my fingers… i’m still trying to kick the habit [which is about five years old by now] but i’m obviously not succeeding :()

the only other one that comes to mind is candy

Homemade macaroni and cheese
Chicken and Dumplings

Chocolate ice cream
Ice cream with chocolate bits
Chocolate chip cookies
Brownies
Fast food french fries
Broccoli/cheese/rice casserole
Fried chicken
My grandpa’s stew
Homemade bread
My mom’s pot roast with carrots and potatoes
My mom’s steak fingers
Taco Bell burrito supreme

Gawd, now I’m hungry!

Lorie

Meatloaf with mashed potatoes.
Beans & cornbread.
Oatmeal.
Waffles.
Peach yogurt.
Chocolate ice cream.
Chocolate chip cookies(must be homemade).

I’m not hungry right now, but just thinking about these foods makes me comfortable.

Grilled cheese sandwiches made with Velveeta
Homemade mashed potatoes
Fried potatoes (cubes, not slices, that are crispy and brown.)
Tater tots
Potato soup

I’m noticing a theme here… perhaps it’s time for me to try a lower-carb diet? Idaho should love me.

When I’m in need of comfort:
[ul]
[li]Tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich[/li][li]Baked potato[/li][li]Potato soup[/li][li]Toast with cinnamon and sugar[/li][li]Mild homemade chili and cornbread[/li][li]Homemade chicken and dumplings with carrots[/li][li]Pecan pie[/li][/ul]

Homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Chicken divan.
Apples & cinnamon.

I don’t really have very many comfort foods, but I do have a few, I guess.

Cheesetoast and large curd cottage cheese. It has to be large curd. The cheesetoast must be rye bread with American cheese.

Leftover homemade (mine only!) spaghetti.

Leftover homemade (my husband’s only!) chili-mac.

Grilled cheese sandwiches dipped in tomato soup that has been made with milk instead of water. In fact, I can’t even eat tomato soup that’s been made with water.

And if I really feel bad or upset, nothing will help except a Kit Kat. (The candy bar, not an animal!! )
