Bad news indeed for fans of this quite brilliant show. It seems as if “Community” is destined to be NBC’s version of “Arrested Development.” Regardless of if the show re-appears in the spring, the fact it was placed on hiatus is a very bad omen for its chances of being picked up for next year. Ratings have been very poor.
I don’t think it’s necessarily anything to worry about. I think it’s just that 30 Rock is coming back and there are only four slots on Thursday for sitcoms. (One alternative is what they did last year, which was to run sitcoms at 10pm, but that killed Outsourced, and I think that show could have succeeded at an earlier hour.)
BOOOOOOOOOO
Someone get Inspector Spacetime to go back and fix this bad decision by the NBC brass.
Exactly. NBC has about seven sitcoms right now and, ideally, it wants to run all of them on Thursday. Unless you’re Thursday at 9 PM Show, something is always being bumped around to a new slot or going on hiatus for a few weeks.
I think Parks And Rec is on shaky ground as well. 30 Rock has gone too long already. Honestly I thought 30 Rock was already cancelled. If Community is cancelled while Whitney continues…well,…that’s just messed up.
Is there a historical precedent to what happens to shows in this situation? Are the episodes produced but unaired?
The Futon Critic tweeted that all of the episodes for this season will be shot and aired.
30 Rock had some good episodes but it’s played. Now every episode is just Liz being an over-the-top frazzled career woman, Jack being an over-the-top egomaniacal superconservative, Tracey being an over-the-top psychotic douchebag, Jenna being an over-the-top neurotic diva, Kenneth being an over-the-top fundie hillbilly, and whatever special guest star they have as that week’s over the top guest. The show doesn’t have, and really never has had, a heart. Basically it’s Community if Chang, the Dean and Pierce were the main characters instead of supporting characters.
Community is actually a strangely sweet show. For one thing the core characters are lonely people who have their hang-ups but ultimately really care about each other.
Gah! NBC, you are the worst.
Boo Hiss! Still, the optimist in me says it will still be renewed…it’s renewal never really had anything to do with rating but syndication money anyway.
It’s the Brita of networks.
I hope this is only a temporary leave of absence and not a cancellation. Community is one of my favorite shows, and IMHO the best comedy currently on network TV.
Considering their ratings, NBC has been pretty patient. So as with Arrested Development, I’ll just be happy that they got to make even three seasons of it.
And then when it is a post facto hit on DVD/streaming we can all be super smug about how we watched it before it made us cool.
Phew, for a second there I thought I was going to have to make a series of pacts with friends to stage any of our untimely deaths to look like a suicide due to their cancellation. Well that’s a load off.
Just because they’re going to marathon the episodes they’ve already paid for at 4:00 PM on a Sunday months from now doesn’t mean that it hasn’t received the kiss of death.
Would they really cancel anything featuring Chevy Chase?

SIX SEASONS AND A MOVIE! six seasons and a movie… sob…
Where’s the petition to get them to cancel Whitney? And can it be the same petition? Two birds, etc.
