My daughter cranked up the old computer today (running Windows ME) and the display was HUGE and there was no mouse control. The following error appeared:
WCMDMGR has caused an error in KERNAL32.DLL.
I was able to use a Restore point and got the system up and running again. However, I got this message:
The utility VSNETUTILS.DLL is missing.
The computer appears to running OK now, but I’m afraid the problem will reappear. I have no idea what the above .dll is nor what is does.
This DLL is part of ZoneAlarm, at least it’s listed as one that should be removed by the ZA uninstall:
The file may have become corrupt due to a file system problem or gotten erased by something else, so ZoneAlarm is failing to start when you boot. You may be able to fix the problem by reinstalling ZA.
After I regained composure, I found this out. My daughter, although she wouldn’t admit it, may have caused this problem accidentally. When I first started using Zone Alarm, it would ask a lot of questions about which programs were allowed to access my computer. She answered no to the use of the program “WCMDMGR” AND checked the box telling ZA to remember that answer every time it was asked. I had to go in and remove that checkbox. I’m going to “un-restore” back to the problem to see if this is what caused the freak out. If not, I can always go back and re-install ZA.
A quick search indicates it’s related to games from WildTangent. wcmdmgr.exe is apparently a bit of spyware which goes online to check for program updates.
Here is an excellent freeware spyware cleaner utility that will remove (at your choice) any spyware resident on your system. I’ve used it and it works perfectly.
