That photo is pretty tame, wherever it came from. It’s not as though he was naked or anything.
Easy way for him to make the whole thing go away is to issue a statement saying “It wasn’t my penis. Mine is smaller.” The flap would die in a heartbeat.
Jury? Conviction?
Hacking a twitter account isn’t a crime, nor is sending a photo of your underoos to another adult. Which explains why he hasn’t approached the police. It is also possible he knows who exactly who did this.
Well the details have grown, his position has become more firm and his tone is increasingly rigid, while the truth is absolutely throbbing to cum out…
Oh, don’t tell me none of you didn’t immediately have the same assumption.
Conviction for what? What would he be prosecuted for?
I think we’re missing the truly horrifying aspect of this story. Assume his account was hacked. That would make it a hacked Weiner account!
It is absolutely true that Weiner, even if guilty of everything being asserted, did nothing illegal.
However, the Right’s contention is people like Chris Lee likewise did nothing illegal but his actions ended his job in Congress.
The political Right would LOVE to take down Anthony Weiner. He is one of the bigger thorns in their side.
So, they are attempting to say this is the same thing to discredit Weiner. Take him down a notch or two.
I have no idea if Weiner did this. I suspect it is a smear job but Weiner’s press conference yesterday made him look guilty as hell and that is from my eyes as someone who is a fan of Anthony Weiner.
At the end of the day though the difference is Weiner has not run a “I am holier than thou” campaign preaching family values and such. That is why Chris Lee was busted.
At worst Weiner sent a suggestive picture to a 21 year old. Nothing illegal about it. Stupid maybe (if he did it) but not illegal.
All this will really do is feed the fire that there is a double standard where the “liberal media” beats up the likes of Chris Lee and gives Anthony Weiner a pass.
It is a false equivalency but the case the right will make and ride for all it’s worth.
The media didn’t make Chris Lee resign. Neither did the Democrats. He resigned because he was screwed with his own party.
It was also a lot more clear cut that he DID something. It’s a lot less clear whether Weiner did anything at all. The woman in question said he never said anything inappropriate to her.
That may well be true. But Derleth mentioned prosecutors and a jury, meaning a criminal proceeding. Even if these allegations turn out to be true or Weiner is pressured into resigning (which seems unlikely at this juncture, but who knows), I don’t see what he would be prosecuted for.
Well, someone’s got to do it. One other thing in Weiner’s favor is this is the woman he recently married. If he was messing around on her, he deserves all the scorn and shame he can get.
Huma, Huma.
The only thing I have seen about potential criminal proceedings is if Weiner’s account was hacked. In that case the hacker committed a crime and considering it is a Congresscritter he hacked whoever he(she) is will get a lot of scrutiny.
Hypothetically if Weiner admitted to all this he has done absolutely nothing illegal. I suppose if he gets a criminal investiagtion rolling against some hacker who does not exist he might get in trouble for that (false report to police or something?).
At worst Weiner’s troubles are political fallout. Not legal (again assuming the worst for him).
No one should be cheating on their wife period regardless of looks but yeah, she is beautiful. (Although Dennis Kucinich wins the award for dirty old man congressman nabbing a young, beautiful woman who makes them look like a real odd couple.)
That said he’d hardly be the first guy to do so.
Hugh Grant cheated on Elizabeth Hurley with a cheap Vegas hooker. I think Elizabeth Hurley is one of the most beautiful women in the world and I suspect Grant could pick up women easily in Vegas or afford a high price hooker. He went for the street hooker though…go figure.
Arnold Schwarzenegger cheated on this with this.
Again, I am NOT saying cheating is “ok” if the chick you cheat with is hotter than your current GF/spouse. It is just astounding that people like this (and I am sure we could come up with more), who could probably gain access to some of the hottest women there are not to mention having beautiful GFs/wives, do this.
I just don’t get it. As I guy I have a serious, “WTF were you thinking?” when I see shit like this.
This is great (from Wikipedia): “According to Thompson, the attention of a policeman was aroused by Grant repeatedly pressing the brake pedal of his BMW with his foot, causing the brake lights to flash.”
Lost in the moment, I guess…
Does anyone remember the promo for Nine Months? In one clip, he’s getting a mugshot. I went to see a movie a couple of days after the arrest and was putting up with the promos when said clip occurred–the audience reacted with roars of laughter, catcalls, and whooping that lasted for a full minute.
once again rachel maddow has done some actual research and investigating. she had a segment on how one could send things out under other people’s accounts. also rep. weiner appeared and said that there is a private security company going through his office and working on finding out what happened and how to guard against it.
rep. weiner did mention mr stewart’s defense.
One Having The Last Name Weiner: An Open Letter to Anthony Weiner
Anthony himself has stated “I heard my last original weiner joke in the fifth grade.”
ETA: Would this story have such legs if it happened to a different politician with a different last name. Say, Clinton?
Okay - why is a private security firm involved here? When Sarah Palin’s email was hacked that case was referred to the Justice Department and prosecuted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. On the face of it this seems like a similar case.
And yeah - that story had legs (pardon the pun) and actual consequences.
There is speculation that Weiner is not referring this matter to the police or the FBI because he either committed the incident in question or knows the person who did it and is protecting them. By referring the matter to a security firm and making a show of beefing up his internet security, he can try to put the matter behind him without submitting to an actual criminal investigation.
I’m tempted to make a joke about her habit of making a federal case out of everything. Yes, that case is similar and Weiner could be blustering and trying to avoid getting in trouble for making a false complaint. It’s also possible that he doesn’t want anything else embarrassing to get out there (for example, if he did take the picture and didn’t tweet it, but did intend it for someone other than his wife) or just wants to get the story out of the news while a federal investigation would keep it there longer.
…
All of those possibilities about his intentions might be true. Time might tell.
