Convert Me(To your Fandom, that is.)

I am just an enormous fan of Slash/Yaoi fanfiction, (that is to say, fiction written by fans of various outlets of fiction depicting character as homosexuals) and of (non-slash) Doctor Who, the show, the books, and the fanfiction.

I am now in the mood for something a little lighter then my last thread to amuse myself with, and would like something new, so I am asking for examples of fanfiction, episodes of shows, or books, (but mostly fanfiction, really, seeing as how it is a lot easier to get a hold of then a video tape, or a book from the library), that you think is likely to fascinate me, and have me asking for more. Peraps’ I will post some of my favorite fics later, but for now, I want to hear from you! What genres, sub-genres, shub-niggurath, series, types of game, do you like, and think I might too? What stories pairing up Harry/Hermione, or maybe Harry/ Snape ( I have read one before, don’t worry prudes, it takes place years after Harry has graduated) do you think I would like? I have never read any fiction concerning a pairing between any stars of eighties actions shows, but I know they are out there. Any one here who has read them? Tales of relationship between two different people who love the same guy, but get stuck having to share him, plan old original fiction concerning romantic affairs, and even male/female couples, are all of interest to me, assuming you can pick out an interesting, well-told example.

I don’t know if it’s the kind of thing you’d be interested in, but for years, I wrote Star Trek: DS9, mostly Garak/Bashir but some gen and other pairings. I’ve got about 50 stories in that genre, some of which won awards in the old alt.startrek.creative newsgroups.

Right now, I’m writing hobbit murder mysteries, mildly slashy (the two pairs of hobbits are paired off, but it’s all PG).

Sherlock Holmes / Dr. Watson, baby. Victorian courtship, where there are corsets and petticoats and “making love” is another word for wooing.

proceeds to flee hordes of screaming fans

If you’re into YAOI, you probably all know about Gravitation – an anime frequently compared to Queer as Folk, but a lot sweeter and sillier. On the off chance you haven’t heard of it, I highly recommend it. The anime is good, though the manga is even better.

Speaking of sweet, silly YAOI (you did ask for something lighter), I’m just getting into something called Kyou Kara Maou. Sort of a takeoff on an old homophobic soap-operatic anime called Fushigi Yuugi, but with mostly queer relationships substituted for the straight ones. I’m also detecting an influence of Harry Potter YAOI doujinshi in it – especially in the two main characters.

Maybe, I don’t know if I don’t see it. How abut a link? If it is on usenet, well, goofle has a usenet archive that responds well to hotlinks.
Kythereia, I can enter in search terms to look up this fandom, but how about some links to good examples, recollections of stories you remember, but can’t find, or the story that first peaked your interest? If, like many of the Digimon stories I remember, no longer has as many pages up anymore, there is always the Internet Archive

Hamish, you are recomending Kyou Kara Maou! Judging from the fan pages, visually, it appears to be closer to Revolutionary Girl Utena, with boys. Interesting.

Thank you guys, but please, can you send me links, within the context of this thread? Oh, yes, and my email address is in my profile, Miss Mapp, thus, can you please send me your newest story? Oh, and when I said lighter, I meant in terms of threads, as opposed to my current obsession of catching certain people using strawmen in other threads, not of story types. For story types, I am asking for light and happy, or dark and angsty, or what-have-you, just all types.

It’s a lot fluffier than Utena, but that element of the forced-same-sex-engagement-which-gradually-turns-into-a-love-match seems to be there (although I’m still not finished the first season, so I may be premature). In any event, it’s clearly shounen ai. Pretty much every male in the story falls in love with – or tries to come on to – the main character.

I so far haven’t seen any scans that do the series justice. Part of it is the energy of the characters, and the dialogue – not to mention the slapstick humour – none of which can be captured in still form.

This archive is a great place to start…

I am currentley enjoting Miss Mapp’s stories, and have looked over Kythereia’s link, as well as having seen clips of Hamish 's show.

However, it still is not enought. I want more. There are so many fans of misc. series, and most of them have a web presence. Come on everybuddy, please tell me what episode of a show is likely to make me into a slavering fanboy of Stargate SG-1, or what fanfiction makes Tracey seem like an interesting guy, please. I know there are fans out there, I can hear you breathing.

I just found this neat live journal community, crack_van which has lots of multifandom recs. And the really cool thing is if you click the fandom links over to the side, there’s a short summary of each fandom. I’d always wondered what Hard Core Logo and Boondock Saints were all about and now I know. Currently, I’m in a retro mood and I’m working my way through the Starsky and Hutch recs.

Another site you might like is the Yuletide Treasure archive which is devoted to obscure fandoms. I’ve found most of the writing on the site to be surprisingly good for slash. And there are some really interesting stories in really weird little fandoms like the Breakfast Club (I’m all about Bender and Andrew now) and the Venture Brothers.
