Coronavirus COVID-19 (2019-nCoV) Thread - 2020 Breaking News

## Only 1 in 10 U.S. coronavirus cases are likely to have been identified, C.D.C. chief says.

I’m not a math whiz and big, scary numbers make my mind go blank, but is he saying there are likely TWENTY-THREE MILLION people infected, not 2.3 million?
:scream:

Meanwhile in Australia…

Victorian state authorities are worried that we’re about to become the “sick man of Australia” since our new daily cases are bouncing back into the double figures.

So this is happening…

That be what he’s saying. I wondered if Redfield would ever find his balls.

And remember, the CDC also predicted that 70% of the country was going to get the virus.

If Redfield’s numbers are right, we’re only about 6.5% of the way there.

Actually Thelma there are now 2.5 million cases along with over 40,000 new cases in the U.S. today–the most new cases the U.S. has ever had in a day.

and there is this:

# New research explores how conservative media misinformation may have intensified the severity of the pandemic…In recent weeks, three studies have focused on conservative media’s role in fostering confusion about the seriousness of the coronavirus. Taken together, they paint a picture of a media ecosystem that amplifies misinformation, entertains conspiracy theories and discourages audiences from taking concrete steps to protect themselves and others.

The end result, according to one of the studies, is that infection and mortality rates are higher in places where one pundit who initially downplayed the severity of the pandemic - Fox News’ Sean Hannity - reaches the largest audiences…ut those who relied on conservative sources, such as Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, were more likely to believe in conspiracy theories or unfounded rumors, such as the belief that taking vitamin C could prevent infection, that the Chinese government had created the virus, and that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was exaggerating the pandemic’s threat “to damage the Trump presidency.”

9,711,780 total cases
491,797 dead
5,247,174 recovered

In the US:

2,504,588 total cases
126,780 dead
1,052,293 recovered

Yesterday’s numbers for comparison:

As noted earlier, the US had a record day for new cases with over 40,000.

Something’s weird there–in your next to last post it was around 800 deaths in one day. In your last, it is around 2,500.

CDC is now estimating that 20 million Americans have been infected by Corona virus (i.e. had it in their systems, symptomatic or not), almost 10x more than individual testing has revealed. They are estimating 5% to 8% of Americans infected at some point. That leaves well over 90% who have not yet been infected, many of whom are both more vulnerable to the disease and who are more at risk to being exposed to it than previously supposed.

Did y’all miss me?

I haven’t been posting here because in truth, there isn’t much going on here in Austria. For several weeks now daily life has been fairly close to “back to normal” (well, maybe unless you’re one of the tens of thousands of people who are still unemployed or on furlough, though those numbers are steadily improving). Major coronavirus stories have long since dropped off the front page, and the newspapers I follow dropped their coronavirus tickers weeks ago. There still remain some restrictions on public assemblies, though they’re not completely banned, and face coverings are required only in pharmacies, hospitals, and places where it’s not possible to maintain social distance (such as in public transit). People seem to be sticking to these rules.

The biggest story nowadays, it seems, is where everyone is going to take their summer holiday, or even if people will be able to afford them. By 1 July most of the EU will have completely lifted its internal travel restrictions. (Right now it’s possible for Austrians to freely travel back and forth only to neighbouring countries, plus a patchwork of others.) A recent poll shows that 53% of Austrians will be vacationing within the country, with 82% travelling by car or train. Only 12% will be flying to their holiday destination, despite rock-bottom prices on many flights. (We saw plenty of intra-EU flights from Vienna for €10 to €40, and not just on budget airlines.) The top holiday destinations outside Austria are Croatia (13%), Italy (5%), Germany (5%), and Greece (3%). A few places in Europe (Sweden, Portugal, the UK, and parts of Italy) remain off-limits, as do most countries outside Europe, and the government has threatened to garnish the wages of anyone who travels there in defiance of the ban.

Several weeks ago I wrote that the mayor of Vienna planned to kickstart the local gastronomical industry by mailing restaurant vouchers to every household in the city. Singles get a €25 voucher and families get €50. The vouchers were finally dispatched this week, though this has turned into somewhat of a fiasco: since the vouchers were not personalized, there has been widespread theft of them. People in apartment complexes are reporting that thieves have gained entry to the apartment lobbies and forced open all the mailboxes to get what is essentially free money (or at least free food). Oops! The mayor says the city will replace stolen vouchers and will be on the lookout for people trying to sell lots of them on eBay and other online marketplaces.

In other news, relief for one of the country’s last remaining industries still under lockdown: as of 11 July, the country’s 8000 registered prostitutes will be permitted to resume business.

Current statistics: 17,477 confirmed cases, 698 deaths, 16,320 recovered. The current number of active cases is 459, which has remained steady for about a month. As of 17 June, the R0 was sitting at 1.05.

New Jersey just went through their records and added a bunch of probable / presumed COVID deaths from earlier in the outbreak, when a lot of people died without being able to get tested.

YES! Welcome home to your new home. :sunglasses:

Y’all are headed in the right direction while everything here is turning to crap.

What I can’t figure out is: what’s in it for them?

It’s their own listeners they’re killing off. Yes, others will die too; but the ones who believe this crap are the ones who are put most at risk.

Many of the people repeating it of course believe it. But can all the media spreading it possibly believe it? and if so, why?

There’s bound to be a certain amount of ‘I really want this not to be happening so I’m going to pretend that it isn’t’, but that doesn’t seem to me to be enough to explain it.

San Antonio is in a world of hurt.

:worried:

Well, when the president says, “If we stop testing, we won’t have so many cases”… whatcha gonna do? (That comment may be out of line for this forum. Sorry.)

Will these “news” outlets make money from peddling conspiracy theories and crap?

Yes?

Then that is what they will do. Forget it Jake. It’s Corona-town.

Abbott take a step back.

Here’s a Newsweek article that talks about the increasing number of new cases in the South and West, and refers to it as a possible “second wave.”

However, this is a complete misunderstanding of the situation. The South and West are not experiencing a second wave. This is still the first wave, because they never made any real effort to contain the virus in the first place, and then promptly abandoned those meager efforts back in early May in favor of reopening the economy.

See here. A second wave would imply that a region had gotten through the first wave, meaning that they had been able to get the number of new cases under control. It is evident that is not the case for the South and West regions of the United States.

We likely do have an actual second wave coming here in the Northeast, probably in the fall. But you won’t have a discernible second wave in a region until you get through the first wave.

When I posted this, I was only looking at the death rate. Today I noticed that the number of cases is multiples higher in Tennessee.

If this is true, maybe it’s a good thing, and more people might have already had it than we thought?
