Crafty Dopers, what are you working on?

Thanks! The bookmarks were unembossed (is that a word? I’m making it a word.) I painted the gold dust directly on the clay and it is so fine that it doesn’t really fall off. Each time I tried to glaze it, it would lose the shine.

The magnets I tried with just spray acrylic that I picked up from my work (hardware store.) Makes them nice and shiny but for some reason sticky as well. Not going to use it anymore, but I’ve been thinking about going over to older ones and putting a new layer of something else on them.

For the earrings and bracelet I’m using sculpey glaze, with a gloss finish. It seems to be doing a decent job. A jewelery artist/seller told me that I should think about using a matte finish instead so I might have to pick up some Modge Podge next time I’m out.

nikonikosuru, those are really cool.

I also create with Sculpey. These are some of my latest creations–planters for succulents.

EmilyG, how do you make those little pianos?

They’re made from cardboard (poster board/Bristol board.) About 14 years ago I figured out how to make a piano pattern, and I’ve been making them from the pattern. Parts are made from foam and a toothpick as well. They take several days to make, but I never make just 1 at a time.

What a bunch of crafty people we are. Love the sculpey stuff. Especially the asymmetrical pot for the plant. The one with the orange and red planks. Those pianos are way cool. Do you make other cardboard stuff? You could make one super-duper diorama for school with that, if you were still in grade school, that is.

I am so loving this thread! I love seeing how talented my fellow Dopers are!

I do have just a wee tiny brag. I don’t find out until next week how well I did at state.

You go girl!

Those little planters are the cutest things. Loving the pianos and I’m in sock-envy.

I’m trying to crochet this, and I’m a complete beginner so I’m finding the band challenging. I’ll keep on trying

I used to do SCA, so there were always costume, armor, and other craft projects around our house. Grad school put a temporary end to that. Have started getting back into things with the 501st, and am working on a Sith Acolyte costume for my son so he can be in the Galactic Academy.

Most recent project started? A scale replica of Callandor, the sword that is not a sword, from Robert’ Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. Basically a longsword that looks like it is made from crystal. Decide to go with laminated Plexiglas rather than clear resin casting for cost and ease of build.

Hooray!!

Some random craziness…

It won’t let me see. Says I need to register.

Wow, I’m impressed by the talent and the projects.
Last winter, I learned nålbinding, an art using one four-inch needle and thumb that predates in invention of knitting. Vikings did it, hence the name I’m using for it (neulakinna in Finnish), but the ancient Egyptians practiced this art, too. I love the look of the strong fabric it creates, the process is very slow, soothing, and I can do it on airplanes.

After making the moebius scarf that was the goal of the class, I decided to make a vest from a gorgeous Madeleine Tosh hand-painted yarn in faded denim colors. I’m more than half done with it.
I still need to invent the method for doing the back I have in mind.

Sorry, I don’t have a site for photos, so I can’t show my work. But here are three links about the art, for anyone who is interested.

None of your links are working for me.

Links don’t work for me either.

Pictures for nalbinding, and I COULD TOTALLY DO THAT WITH THE FOSSILIZED MAMMOTH-BONE YARN NEEDLE THAT A PALEOANTHROPOLOGIST FRIEND OF MINE MADE FOR ME USING PALEOLITHIC BONE-WORKING TECHNIQUES.

Found out my socks did not win anything at state, but my Seed Stitch Tam received an Honorable Mention. The matching scarf took third at county.

This was my first time entering anything in the local fairs. I had fun. I think I will do it again next year.

To qualify as “crafty” does it have to be small stuff–jewelry, quilts…like that–or would a large crafty item qualify?

Congratulations. That tam is lovely. Are you on Ravelry? (I am there as kayT.) I’ll have to see if there are county fairs here I can enter. I used to live in Los Angeles and visited the LA County fair every year and admired the entries but never did enter. Maybe someday. If you do next year be sure to post pictures!

Currently I’m knitting an afghan as a wedding present for my cousin’s daughter. It’s an off-white in superwash wool, which is lovely. Sport weight so goes slowly; lacy pattern. I really like how it looks. However, it’s a little warm here in TX for having a wool afghan in one’s lap. I don’t have pictures of it yet but here’s a picture of one I made for her sister a few years ago that’s similar.

KayT, that is so lovely. And remember, it won’t always be a roasting hot oven outside (she says as she suffers through the 3rd 90+ day so early in the hot season).

I’m not the starter or the arbiter of what belongs in the thread, but I’d sure like to see what you’ve got going on NoCoolUsername.
Oh, I should add. Right now I’m trying to do something “manly” as I have a gift I need to make for a guy at work. I’ve been experimenting with different copper patinas and, well, what’s manly in jewelry. If I post my results, will you give your opinion on which is manliest?

Oh yes, show us some manly jewelry. Bracelets, maybe?

And I too would like to see what NoCoolUsername is up to.

And it may not be roasting hot forever but this afghan needs to get done as the wedding is June 15. Hope the AC bill can take the strain. Thanks for the kind words.
