Crocs (the shoes): what do you think?

Looking for summer shoes that are comfortable and can be worn in places other than the beach, but can also get wet. Lots of my students like Crocs and say they are very comfortable. They also apparently do not retain foot odor like so many other shoes worn without socks, allegedly. I think they’re kind of ugly, but if they really are comfortable, don’t get all funky like leather sandals or Tivas, and can be worn in the water, maybe they’re worth the $30?

Anyone have them? Do you like them? Are they durable?

Thanks.

I love 'em. I got a pair because I suffer from plantar fasciitis and my podiatrist recommended them.

I absolutely love my crocs, especially for the reasons you list in the OP: very comfy and don’t get the weird foot funk and smell. They do resemble clown shoes a bit, but when you have clown feet like me, that is a good thing.

The only complaint I have about them is when I wear them in my local supermarket, I build up a fierce static charge and get some nasty shocks.

Personally, I think they look stupid. However, that being said, I do own a pair. They are very slip-resistant, and I work ion a kitchen, where floors are VERY slippery with water, oil, grease, etc…I know lots of people who work in potentially slippery environments wear them. I haven’t found them to be that comfortable, though. My feet hurt more after being on my feet in them for ten hours than they did when I wore sneakers (and fell down a lot.)

I wear orthotics in my shoes but can’t wear them in open shoes, so this is good to know.

Yeah, they’re dopey looking, which is why I have resisted getting them. Also, quite trendy right now. But enough people have now told me they are comfortable that I am considering overriding my aversion of them.

The next question is, are they worth $30? How long do they last? I’ve heard the knock-offs are crap and not durable at all, but are the originals? And which design is better, the Beach one or the Cayman one?

They look ridiculous, like toy shoes. There are lots of shoes out there that are highly functional that don’t make you look like a tard. Sure, they might cost a few bucks more, but a few bucks is worth retaining some dignity and not ruining your appearance.

Well, you asked what we thought.

How about giving me some examples of shoes that would better suit my purpose? That is:

  1. Waterproof
  2. Odor-proof
  3. Comfortable/good for the feet, without orthotics
  4. Can be worn in summer without socks

Preferably in black. I’m open to suggestion. Thanks.

I’ve had a pair for almost two years. I bought them becuase they were ridiculous and pink. They’re the fake kind, though.

They are very comfortable. I don’t like to wear sandals (ballerina feet and such), and they’re great for summertime.

You can stand in them all day, walk all over the place in them… they do get dirt inside, but you can just rinse them out. They’re excellent for any situation where your foot is somehow injured- like if you find yourself covered in blisters or if you split a toanail or whatever. They don’t press or rub anywhere.

And I think they’re cute! so there! I don’t care if they look like clown shoes!

It’s kind of a toss-up about where this should go, but since the thread seems to be (mostly) discussing the practicality of the shoes (moreso than the fashion), I think this would be a better fit in MPSIMS.

Fine for gardening. Hideous everywhere else. Unless your 9 and then they’re just fine. My niece looks super cute in hers.

I don’t think they’re attractive at all, except in an “I feel like wearing silly shoes” way (which, IMHO, is a good enough reason, I wear silly stuff sometimes too) but I confess that the biggest reason I have for not buying them is that I assumed that, being plastic-y, they would make your feet sweaty and stinky.

Alternatives? Hmm… maybe nurse shoes? I have a pair that are pretty comfy, but I haven’t worn them sockless, and I wouldn’t swear that they’re actually waterPROOF so much as “don’t appear to suffer much from exposure to water.” I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where I’ve needed them to be more waterproof than other shoes.

They need to be wearable to the beach, but not embarrassing to wear elsewhere. I liked my Tevas but they did get kinda stinky, which these apparently don’t, thus the attraction.

Of the three fora, I’d think MPSIMS would be the LEAST likely place for this. It’s about shoes, which is fashion and thus CS. It’s about peple’s opinions on the shoes, which is IMHO. It’s definitely NOT anything I’m sharing.

Are straw shoes like this OK for your feet? They’re reasonably cute, but I can’t even hazard a guess as to their support level - not much, I’d wager?

I have an extremely high instep (tall foot) Crocs don’t fit me, they hurt across the top of my instep.

If you go to crocs.com, they now come in lots of different shapes not just the big clown shoes. I’m thinking of getting some of the slim sandals, probably the Cleo.

I have two pairs of the Caymens, I bought them instead of the Beach because it uses real sizing, not just S-M-L. I also bought them for a foot injury but they’re so heavenly I keep wearing them.

Make sure you get them on the large side so they’re sort of roomy. They should fit very loose with no pressure points. They don’t get stinky. They can get a little sweaty but the lack of pressure points keeps the air flowing.

Totally worth $30.

What surprised me is that they’re amazingly light for how clunky they look. I wear mine all over the place, I know they look stupid but they’re worth it for the comfort. Mine are green caymans. They make me look like I have Gumby feet, but that’s okay.

I think they’re pretty ugly but have two pairs, one beach and one of the no-holes variety, which, IMO, look better than the ones with holes, but still not great. I got the first pair for work (vet tech) and liked them enough to get another pair. Both are brown, therefore minimizing their ugliness.

They’re very good for rocky beaches and times when you’re dressing down. I recently got some keen sandals (about $100) which have turned out not to be very good for beaches because pebbles get stuck in them and are difficult to dislodge. The Crocks will loose their shine after a while (I think you can get something to put on them to restore them), but mine are still functional over a year later.

I have these crocs. I’m a hospital nurse and I’m on my feet all night, and these are the only shoes I’ve worn in my 11 years of nursing that don’t make my feet hurt. I’ve worn all kinds of nurse shoes, sneakers, clogs, and none of them helped. When you’re in scrubs (that look like pajamas anyway), Crocs don’t look stupid. Especially when they’re a dark color like blue and don’t have the holes in the top.

And if I see a person with Crocs on, having the experience I do with them, I don’t think “that person looks stupid”. I bet that person is probably comfortable and is able to concentrate on more important things than their sore feet or what other people think of their shoes.

You might be interested in Shoes for Crews, I swore by them when I used to work in a fast food joint. When they were new, you could spill grease on the floor, get a running start, jump, and land on the puddle, without slipping more than a 1/2" or so. They’re pretty cheap, too, about $30, IIRC.
