So I see all over the business news that the makers of Crocs are on their last legs. They are ugly shoes and don’t even look to me to be comfortable. But I’ve never had a pair.
Were they popular just because it was trendy or is there real comfort behind them?
I own a pair (the mary jane type which are marginally less ugly than the clog type) and they are very comfortable, but to me no more than a good pair of athletic walking shoes. But in the summer, they’re lighter and cooler.
I understand that they are popular with nurses and other health care workers not just for the comfort, but because you can rinse the blood/poo/vomit off them more easily than other shoes. And nurse shoes are pretty ugly anyway.
Unfortunately, Crocs don’t fit me, as I’m exactly between sizes and picky about shoe fit. I have a couple of pairs of mock-Crocs, though, and they are genuinely super-comfortable. I don’t wear them out of the house except for a quick trip to the car or something, but they’re my in-house footwear of choice. (I find it more comfortable to wear some sort of shoe when doing chores and housework.)
The problem with some styles is when they have holes in the top - blood or other nasty biohazardous material can then run right into your shoe and potentially come in contact with a cut or sore on your foot.
They’re made of a foam resin which does keep things very light and cool, yes. However, I felt like I was wearing packing material when I tried on a pair. No appeal to me at all.
I’m moderately anti-trendy, but I like the Crocs my wife gave me for Xmas.
They go off and on easier than almost any shoe, and are more comfortable and secure than almost any non-buckling sandal.
I can do medium hard yard work in them, such as digging with a shovel, and then slip them off at the door.
The ones I was given have a piece of perforated leather on the top and I get compliments on the appearance. I’ll probably buy a cheap pair at a thrift store to use for dirty work, so the nice ones will last longer.
I am very happy with my off-brand Walmart crocs. I don’t know how much better the Croc brand is but mine are very comfortable and cool in the summer. I have four pairs and I don’t think I paid more than five bucks for each. I know most people make fun of them but I could go my whole life without another style. That’s my only problem. I can’t stand wearing any other shoe. My tennies feel so constricting now and my feet feel so sweaty and HOT I can’t stand them anymore.
I’m wearing a pair now and I love them. They are brown with a leather top so unless you look close you really can’t tell they are Crocs (wearing them with jeans and a golf shirt).
I’ve had times when I’ve been working with something dirty and I just wear them straight into the shower to clean me and the shoes up (a different pair, not the leather ones, but I probably could with these as well).
One other thing nobody else has mentioned is they are anti-bacterial, so unlike other summer shoes worn without socks… these don’t stink.
I’ll be upset if they go under… may have to stock up on a few pairs. Yes, I plan to be the man wearing the 20 year old fashion trend that everyone will be pointing at.
I have the same problem, because I wear size 10 1/2 shoes, and Crocs are only available in full sizes. I have a pair of size 10’s that are too small, but size 11’s were way too big when I tried them on.
I’m a shoe nut and was very skeptical, especially since so many of them are so ugly. Still, for working at LEAST eight hours on your feet, those are the best and I’ve spent over $300 for shoes to wear at work.
I don’t have the name brand but I have a version sold in the hospital and they are very comfortable. They’re bouncy! I like to have them during mud season and to go to the dump as they can be rinsed off.
They’re incredibly comfortable. The only problem is that, like Rushgeekgirl, any other shoes seem less comfortable now. So soft, and so airy in hot weather.
Mine are black and don’t look ugly. I had to get these little totem things to stick in a couple of the holes because I kept putting on my GF’s shoes - identical to mine except for being two sizes bigger.
If the Crocs company are going under, it won’t be because their shoes are less popular, but because they’re so easy for other companies to copy.
I’ve had a pair for a few years now and really like them. My style has no holes on the top… at the time I think they were marketed as “orthopedic” crocs. They have vent holes along the edge but they are still very hot and sticky when worn without socks. I prefer to wear them with socks but that’s not very practical around the house.
