And Nicklz?
You can have Sosa. As Crunchy has heard a million times, Sosa is lazy in the outfield. Give me Edmonds, who always goes for it.
[sub]And I can hear Crunchy’s evil cackling as I admit to liking a Cardinal’s player. “The mind control is working! Soon she will be in my evil thrall!”::[/sub]
Well as long as we have A. Jones out there, he could cover for Sammy.
Sorry, Edmonds is a Cardinal and still has 6 years left on his contract with us. He’s ours. Although, since you can’t support your teams best player (the trade-off is offense for lack of defense), if the Cubs did get him, I think it won’t be long before you complain about Edmonds strike-outs (167 times last season) and sub-.300 batting average (although .285-.295 is respectable).
Edmonds plays great in the outfield and does some amazing things defensively, but he’s not going to win any batting titles. There’s your trade-off, offense for defense. Neither player is what one would call well-rounded.
And the “lady” comment was not a compliment. It was more of a Jerry Lewis-like “Hey laaady” sort of thing.
hardy, dear, don’t make me hurt you. Sammy’s the only great (and almost the only GOOD) position player the Cubs have. Mueller’s good, or, at least he was before the injury. Everyone else is average AT BEST.
He’s the single reason the Cubs have any offense. He’s the only reason they’re within sight of anything resembling the postseason. (Yeah, the bullpen has been great, until recently, but a great bullpen does not a playoff team make if you can’t hit. And the Cubs can’t hit).
And, with Baylor around, he’s likely to be the only Cub that can hit for a few more years, too…
I’ve got to stop going off on Cubs rants. It’s only depressing me more…
Bite me, Crunchy
Oh sure, take your anger out on the Cardinal fan.
Face it, Sosa is the Cubs’ best player. Any team would like to have him. Ernie Banks is a great Cub, and he’s not known for his defense either.
BTW, that’s MY line you stole there, sparky.
Oh, yes, how quickly I forgot, Crunchy. Only you can use the phrase “bite me”.
Sparky? Hey, Lady? Don’t blame me for your lack of flirting success.
::sigh::
Looks like there’ll be a pic of me, with a godawful, completely clashes with my hair, Cardinals hat on Frog Boy’s webpage. Better keep me away from sharp objects, prescription drugs and closed garage doors. :rolleyes
I will also be scanning and posting the ad you’ll need to take out for the newspaper. Need help writing it?
I sort of feel sorry for Cubs fans this year, that team should be taken out and given to the fans for a couple of hours.
The Cards have given me a bit of a worry this year but in complete opposition to the Cubs they seemed to have pulled it out when it counts.
But as good sports fans I think it behoves us to be fair, there still is a chance, and there is always next year.
Not that that is going to get you out of any bets you know you were betting on the Cubs going into it. 28 years is plenty of time to learn that supporting them is fine, but investing in them is just plain futile.
Britt, would you mind if I worked this into the ad that hardygrrl will have to take out in the Post-Dispatch?
I can never hold my head up high…my ancestors are rolling in their graves…
Oh, the pain.
Revel for now Crunchy, do the happy dance, for as every Cubs fan learns as a small child…
There’s always next year
Because Barry Bonds just his his 68th homer and I feel like lashing out at someone else, I’ll so a premature stomp on the Cubs’ next season:
Next season, unless the Cubs find a diamond rookie or make some incredible trades, they’ll still just have Slammin’ Sammy on offense. Lieber may be able to repeat the good year he had this year, but Kerry Wood’s health may be an issue again.
The Cardinals however, will be returning with Fernando Vina, JD Drew, Placido Polanco, and NL ROY Albert Pujols - all of whom are .300 hitters. Jim Edmonds will be back, good for 25-30 HRs and about a .290 average. McGwire (if he doesn’t retire) will be back, and if this year’s exceptionally poor batting average turns out to not be a fluke, he’ll still be the scariest damn thing a pitcher could see coming out of the dugout to pinch-hit. Renteria, after a slow start, is lingering close to .270 again. Mike Matheny is never a great offensive threat, but is a top defensive catcher in the league. If McGwire does retire, we can play Craig Paquette (great clutch hitter this year) or the uber-fast Kerry Robinson in the OF.
And that’s just the line-up.
The pitching staff will feature 20-game winners Darryl Kile and Matt Morris. Rick Ankiel seems to have gotten his head on straight in the minors this year and will most likely return to the lineup next year. Rookie Bud Smith has been great (how 'bout that no-hitter, folks?) and will most likely be back. For the 5th starter we can choose from Dustin Hermanson, Woody Williams, one of the Benes brothers (who are good when they’re healthy), or Garret Stephenson (although Stephenson is returning from surgery, so he’ll probably work out of the bullpen next year).
Yeah, the Cubs have next year, but they look to be the same team, while the Cardinals look like they’ll be better with a solid pitching staff, which they lacked in the first half this year.
