Absolutely. For one thing, there’s some controversy about the accusations against Franken.
For another, even if the accusations against Cuomo were doubtful (and they’re not), Cuomo has a longstanding and apparently well-deserved reputation as a political thug and a bully, and as a result he doesn’t have a single friend in the Senate, in the Assembly, in the State of New York, or in the Democratic Party as a whole, including (obviously) on the national level.
So he’s done. He can tough it out and get impeached (and convicted), or he can resign now. Those are the only choices available to him.
And worth noting (or re-noting if already mentioned): during the New York State version of impeachment the impeached person doesn’t get to sit in his (or her) seat and sneer at the proceedings—he (or she) is removed from power while the process continues.
So we’ll have no Trump-style ignoring of the ‘witch hunt’ while continuing to exercise power, from Cuomo.
True, he never confessed. OK, so a confessed sexual predator nominated an alcoholic sexual predator.
Back to Cuomo, I am totally amazed that he hasn’t stepped down. He is going to have to do that or he will be removed. He has few friends in the state house, surely not enough to stave off the inevitable impeachment and removal. Sad ending to a political dynasty.
He still thinks he has a most powerful person who not only can but will grant him a pardon before anything gets out of hand. Of course, he’s wrong, but hey, that’s what you get for hitching your wagon to that “star”.
If nothing else, he could probably do a political about face and Cozy up to Trump ala Blagojevich. Trump would probably views him as a kindred spirit, and interestingly, hasn’t to my knowledge, hasn’t attacked Cuomo since the scandal came out, despite the fact that he is an easy target Democrat. Finally, a number of Trump allies have come to his defense.
No, Cuomo is the Democratic governor of New York. You seem to be mixing him up with Matt Gaetz, a Republican congressman who was also mentioned in this thread and who had directly requested a pardon from Trump.
I think you’re giving people too much credit. Trump bragged about groping women and people voted for him.
There’s a mindset that look at a situation where somebody is being victimized and they don’t sympathize with the victim; they envy the victimizer. And they imagine if they support predators like this, they will someday rise to their level. They won’t, of course. They’re just being victimized in a different way and are too stupid to understand it.
I agree completely with what you say here. But what I was suggesting as being ‘a bridge too far’ for some who are disposed to be unsympathetic to victims, is the overt job-related retaliation Cuomo apparently practiced–transferring those who complained to dead-end jobs, etc.
Trump was never accused of that. If he had been, it might have tested the ardor of some of his fans. They were okay with him groping, and even with him insulting those he groped. But if the stories had been about him, as President, using the power of the Presidency to harm the careers of those he groped—well, we’ll never know.
Melissa DeRosa, Cuomo’s top aid who was heavily implicated in the James report in attempting to discredit the Governor’s accusers and pressure victims to remain silent, has resigned.
One of the few things that Trump bragged about that might have been true was how he could have stood on a street corner shooting people and he would still get votes.
Now I would like to think he’d lose some voters if he was proven to have fired people who objected to sexual harassment, maybe even enough to lose the first election (it was somewhat close after all). But many of his core supporters would let it slide or even think it proved how dominant and macho he was.
And now Roberta Kaplan, chairwoman and co-founder of the group Time’s Up and a lawyer who represented Ms. De Rosa in the AG’s investigation, has resigned from her position with Time’s Up. The AG’s investigation had revealed Ms. Kaplan had reviewed an Op-Ed letter attacking Cuomo’s first accuser, Lindsey Boylan. The letter was never published.
For those not familiar with the group, Time’s Up was founded by prominent Hollywood women to fight sexual abuse in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein mess.
