I think Trump supporters would see the firing/demotion as perfectly justified, given that the woman in question was obviously lying just to get at Trump’s money. Among the obvious sins they have ignored or tried to explain away, firing a subordinate who wouldn’t put out wouldn’t even make the top ten.
By all means, lets compare something that happened in most of our lifetimes to something that happened over 150 years ago.
The important question is whether or not those who made the decisions back then and those in power in the Republican Party now are the same people. It doesn’t matter whose lifetime things happened in. That’s irrelevant.
WaPo media columnist Margaret Sullivan (she writes op-eds discussing how the media are handling various things; formerly did the same at NYT) has a column comparing coverage of Cuomo by local Albany NY paper vs coverage by CNN and kid brother Chris Cuomo.
tl;dr: She highly approves of the local Albany paper coverage, but trashes Chris Cuomo’s and CNN’s behavior in covering the story.
The head of the NY State Senate says they may still impeach even if he resigns. He would do that to make sure Cuomo never holds statewide office again.
Hmm… sounds like a warning shot to his members that if you are now grumbling to impeach, don’t go on to say “oh, he’s gone now, don’t make me vote on it, next thing please!” if he’s out the door by then…
But that IS a sensible move if you can tell he’s going to be uncooperative and will be looking to get payback later.
I thought of it as a message to Cuomo – if you make this easy by resigning now, we’ll drop it. If you make us actually start impeachment proceedings, we’re going to finish that process whether you’re around or not.
Pretty much.
Meanwhile, behind closed doors in the Governor’s office…
Is Cuomo ever not in a fighting mood?
Breaking news - Cuomo is speaking right now and announcing his resignation.
whoa, nelly, he just resigned!!!
w00t!
And he is gone!
Not quite yet - it takes effect in 2 weeks. Not sure why but at least he will be gone soon.
i’m figuring some i dotting and t crossing.
perhaps some making sure his side of things is pushed.
Unless it’s a Trumpian “two weeks” (i.e., never). But I don’t think he could get away with it — he’d set a record for the fastest impeachment/conviction/removal in history.
I was under the impression that his impeachment might happen sooner than two weeks. It’ll be interesting to see what the NY state legislature does with this news. Part of me wants him to be impeached anyway, but I"m not sure whether that’s coming from a place of political or ethical wisdom, or vindictiveness.
Cuomo just resigned.
I think they will drop the impeachment proceedings, with some kind of handshake agreement that he won’t run for statewide office again.
Better get it in writing.
