All true. But it doesn’t need to work that way and it shouldn’t. It has little bearing on the harassment charges except it shows him to be a bully. I don’t like bullies. That many politicians are bullies rather than fair-minded negotiators doesn’t make me any more tolerant of that sort of behavior. No one gets a pass just because it is common.
I don’t think it happens a hundred times a day. I find your expectation that it does very disturbing. The last time someone in management tried to bully me I handed it right back to him and basically dared him to go forward with it.
If the allegations of this are true then this is classic predator behavior. Predators seek out people who they feel they can manipulate.
99 state legislative bodies. Two federal legislative bodies. Fifty governors. An untold number of city, county and other local bodies and executives.
A hundred times a day? That’s probably a remarkably low estimate.
Well, sure. I couldn’t agree more. But sometimes it does work that way. Of all the charges against Cuomo at the moment, this is the one that bothers me the least.
It seems like a rather broad brush in which to paint politicians.
…this isn’t normal behaviour. And it isn’t happening hundreds of times a day.
It doesn’t surprise me that something like this happens in Hollywood because of it’s history. I’m not saying there wasn’t significant wielders of power in politics but in the age of communication the propensity to hang oneself no longer requires barrels of ink.
Maybe some have a rosier view of politics than I do. Maybe they’re right. Who knows.
I do recommend to everyone Robert Caro’s four-volume (so far) biography of Lyndon Johnson. Maybe that’s where I got my view of political thuggishness.
But, as I said above, whether or not Cuomo’s conversation with Kim was unusual, I’ve despised Cuomo for years. If he’s forced to resign, I won’t shed a tear.
Right now, our lieutenant governor is kind of a non-entity. But there will ultimately be an election, which will be a chance to start without Cuomo’s dominance and ballot machinations guaranteeing him re-election.
…if it happens hundreds of times a day then you should be able to provide multiple examples of it happening today. Name one.
Andrew Cuomo and Ron Kim.

…GRRRRRRRR
Chris Christie was apparently known to do this also.
I would expect there are others. Chicago has produced a lot of Governors that ended up in jail.
…I’m sure there are others. But that kinda misses the point. Just because there are others doesn’t mean we should ignore it in this thread. This thread doesn’t even touch on many of the other reasons why Cuomo should go: from prisons to bail reform, this man is a walking disaster.
No, I got your point, you foolishly said name one on of all places the Straight Dope. You got to know we’ll rise to the occasion.
Given that these are private conversations to which I am not privy, and the Cuomo/Kim conversation is likely to be the exception in that Kim recounted his conversation with Cuomo to journalists, I can’t do that, of course. And I expect you knew that.
It seems very important to you that I’m wrong, and that politics is nicer than I think it is. No problem. I concede. I’m not sure why it’s so important, but (as I said above) maybe you’re right.
But are you under the impression that I’m defending Cuomo? He’s been a terrible governor from the start, and I’ve despised him since he started his first term.
But, if you must have a cite, I recommended a book (books, actually) above. It’s a fantastic read.
I am not a fan of Cuomo, to put it mildly, but I think his refuse-to-back-down approach is the right one, strategically. No one can force him to resign, and that’s the smart approach for him to take.
You see it again and again. Politicians who resign in the face of scandal have their images frozen in time as “the Guy Who Resigned Due to the Scandal” and that’s all people remember of them. When people ride it out, the public eventually loses interest and moves on. If Ralph Northam would have resigned in the face of public pressure over the blackface contretemps, he would be a pariah forever. But now, he’s just another governor with a “controversies” section in his Wiki page. There are allegations against Joe Biden which are remarkably similar to those against Cuomo, but people carried on about them for a while and now they’re Old News, and discussion about Biden is not about that.
The only real issue for Cuomo as I see it is that he’s up for reelection in 2022, and if these investigations drag on for a long time, they could still be making headlines and be harder to shake by that time, which could imperil his reelection bid if a serious challenger emerges.
Assuming he makes it that far, he should do the right thing and not run again. There are plenty of good politicians in New York State who could pursue his preferred policies and not have these stains on them.
Assuming these accusations turn out to be real, he should be pressured to resign immediately. We need to make it clear that no one can treat women like this. We’ll see how much of a lasting impact the #MeToo movement has made.
Turns out that Cuomo’s aides actually were cooking the books:
Top aides to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo were alarmed: A report written by state health officials had just landed, and it included a count of how many nursing home residents in New York had died in the pandemic.
The number — more than 9,000 by that point in June — was not public, and the governor’s most senior aides wanted to keep it that way. They rewrote the report to take it out, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The New York Times.
I wonder if this will seal the deal on a resignation.
Not that the harassment is any less bad, but even without the harassment (which seems pretty well documented, btw), people can’t tolerate deliberately manipulating data. Once you go down that road, you’re green lighting all kinds of shit.
I never thought I’d say this, but he needs to step away. He can make up a health reason for all I care but he needs to let someone else run the state. He’s lost his moral authority. Too bad because I basically liked Cuomo’s handling of the COVID crisis in his state, but I guess it was misleading.
Biden has been accused of telling 25 year-old-women that he’s open to having sex with women in their twenties?
Biden has been accused of getting a 20-something underling alone with him and telling her he’s lonely?
Biden has been accused of forcing a mouth-kiss on a young woman?
Really?
I don’t like what Biden has been accused of–being sort of hands-on patriarchal and overly affectionate. It’s not professionally appropriate behavior. It’s insensitive and disrespectful and patronizing, and I hope he never does any of that again.
But I haven’t heard of any credible accusations of him propositioning women who work for him.
…???
