A few years back I bought a brand new large 4WD Ute (or pickup truck) which was silver/grey colour.
So I got special plates for it. BTL5tR.
I bet the autism support plate design is fairly new. Last 5 years, 10 for sure. ETA: AI tells me it came out in Aug 2025, so not even a year ago.
Their personalization decision may predate that.
Which brings up an interesting question: How difficult is it in whichever state, to move a personalized plate from one background to a different background? I could imagine it’s trivial if the state bureaucracy thought of that idea, or a nearly impossible Catch-22 if they did not.
In Virginia, you have to renew your vehicle registration every 1 or 2 years (you can choose, 2 years gets you a small discount), at that time, you can order a new license plate with a different design and if it is a personalized plate, as long as all the letters still fit on the new design, then you can get it. What most people don’t seem to realize (at least from what I can tell), is that that the cost of registration is the same regardless of whether you opt to have a physical plate delivered or just the required stickers (with the month and year). So if your plate is all dirty and beat up, you can just choose to do get a new plate and it would not cost you more for registration.

I suspect nowadays that many people think that’s a good thing. It might thwart license plate readers, but be an innocent explanation, not the result of hiding your plate behind a cover or something similar. For which you might get cited.
Here in FL they issue you a new metal plate (with a new number) every 10 years whether you want that or not. I haven’t gone 10 years with a personalized plate yet, so I don’t know what happens then. But I bet I get to keep my custom letters.
As to plate backgrounds, there is slow continuous turnover in what backgrounds are offered. So there has to be a way to deal with a customer who has background X that’s no longer on offer. There should be a way for them to have the customer specify what they want instead. We’ll see.
That is a good possibility, but I think it is just that they don’t realize that all they have to do is check a box. It is easier and faster to just have them send the stickers. Also, there is no obligation that you use the new physical plates your received. They are technically invalid if you don’t have the registration stickers on them, so if you think your plate is particular clever, you can display one of them in your house.
Anyway enough about talking about how you can get THEPL8 you want and back to providing a SAMPL of the ones you see.

BTHGOOD on a white Mach-e with a frame that read “Believe in good” (Yes, I saw it close enough that I could see that it said “good” and not “God”). My best guess is that plate means “Be the good.”
Wisconsin has had an issue, particularly for plates made in the late 2000s and early 2010s, with plates on which the paint (or sheeting, or whatever process they used) would literally peel off of the metal.
The state mandates that people with damaged plates like these replace them, but unless the plate is less than 5 years old when it becomes damaged, the owner has to pay an $8 fee for new plates.
Because of people being cheap, lazy, and/or liking the idea that it’s hard for the police to read their plates, one still sees a lot of those illegible plates on the road there.
