Custom Licence Plates — Seen in the Wild

Since we’re onto Teslas just now …

Today I saw a Model S with a Miami Heat plate background. Those only hold 5 characters. It was ITFLYS.

Following who I’m assuming is a Prince fan through town today- a Jeep with DOVS CRY

Today I saw someone who likes FIR3FLI whether it is the show or the bug, I do not know. If it is the later then they might get along with TH3HGR. Also, 1-ICEMOM who likes hockey by the looks of the stickers on her car may not like K9MUM since most dogs aren’t great on ice.

I’m not sure how to interpret this one:

Also recently saw:
WKNDGRL. I assume Weekend Girl and I’ll leave it up to the reader to decide what that means.
KATMAN2

My front frame says “You are beginning to damage my calm.”

Seen today, while driving home to Illinois from my parents’ house in Wisconsin: a Milwaukee Brewers Wisconsin plate, with NOHTTR.

For non-baseball fans: a no-hitter is a baseball game in which the pitcher(s) for one team do not give up any hits over the course of the game.

The Golden State Warriors’ recent championship dynasty started in 2015 and includes 4 championships, in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.

This fan appears to be paying homage to those 4 titles.

GSWFAN4

Yesterday I saw a newish jeep with a decent set of off-road customizations. The plate read BG⎵WRNR.

Meaningful to insiders; meaningless to the plebs. IOW, perfect.

Or else GSWFAN, GSWFAN1, GSWFAN2, and GSWFAN3 were already taken.

That too!

After considerable fussing w the CA DMV’s awkward plate ordering system I’ve found that GSWFAN and GSWFAN1 are taken but GSWFAN2 and GSWFAN3 are available. As is GSWFAN5 for anyone optimistic about their future playoff chances.

So homage it was. Good call, there @Bullitt.

For anyone wanting to test out CA plates, start here Special Interest and Personalized License Plates Orders - California DMV, then click [Order personalized plates]. After a terms & conditions page (which tells you anything involving “69” is restricted  ) you get to the page to select your plate background. The first choice, labeled “Environmental”, is the ordinary-looking plain plate. Then you finally get to where you can input your chosen letters/numbers and can click [Check Availability].

Here in FL things are simpler: Personalized License Plate Check.

What is it with Teslas and custom plates? I saw ROOSTER on a red Tesla in the grocery store parking lot today. The S might have been a 5… it was kind of far away.

Yes the California process is unnecessarily cumbersome.

Another minor but significant detail is, if you want a half space among the maximum 7 characters, you cannot use the online application because only 7 characters are available therestrong text (and you need an 8th, for the “/” half space). You must physically go into a DMV office to order it on their paper form.

That’s what I had to do, over two months ago. I wanted and ordered M151 OBW.

I definitely did not want what’s available through the online application process. This is what it would look like:

Very different from M151 OBW.

I ordered special plates over 2 months ago and they still have not arrived. But a good sign is that when I entered those characters just now the system said it is unavailable. Which means my request is in the California database. Yay!

I hope it is true that TCH4EVR is serious as we are in the need of good educators.

I’m not sure a 95yo makes a great educator. Most are nearly deaf curmudgeons by then.

Yesterday I saw a small SUV/family van with ART ⎵⎵SEE. The 60-ish lady driving did have that “art fair lady” look about her.

Not 2 miles later I rolled up behind a VW new Beetle painted white with black racing stripes a la Herbie from oh so many years ago. But stylistically modernized; they weren’t a direct copy of 1960s stripes. And with the word “TURBO” prominently across the rump. The plate read GIRL⎵EEE. I did not get a look at the driver but I did want to meet her. Sigh; 'twas not to be.

Some searching tells me 2019 was the last model year for the new new (sic) Beetle. There was some rumoring about it coming back in 2025 or 2025-1/2, but so far that looks to be an illusion.

Teslas, like Corvettes are “look at me” cars. Not all Tesla owners of course, but a lot of them. So a personalized license plate goes along with that well.

I saw a Chevy tahoe SUV thing today. It was a dark red color with a hint of purple / maroon in it.

The plate said CRANBRY. Which was a pretty good description of the color.

I seem to be on a roll with this theme.

A few minutes ago I pulled up behind a mildly customized late model Toyota Tundra pickup truck in a striking shade of bright blue.

The plate read VODOBLU. With a bit of thinking I came up Voodoo blue. But what’s the significance? Well, it is a very blue truck. Hmm. Sure enough, that’s the name of the factory paint color. Pretty snazzy: toyota tundra voodoo blue - Google Image Search
