D & D on the Straight Dope setup thread. (In Middle Earth FA63)

I’m having trouble accessing 5Etools as my browser is old (and not updateable). Is it similar to the Lucky feat in the PHB?

I understand you use point buy to generte stats. How many points do I get? Any limits (other than min 8 and max 20?)

I’ll start with two levels of Bard, then Wiz 1, Clr 1 and Bard 3.

ETA A Took. If you use the PHB subraces, a Lightfoot.

Bountiful Luck in from XGE, within 30’, as a reaction, a Hobbit can allow an ally to reroll a 1 on a d20 attack, ability check or save.
I was giving players a base 86 total, then Race, Feats and possibly your special will come into play. (I’ll give you 3 choices shortly). No real restrictions on the stats. 8-20. But for a Hobbit you could have a 6 strength.

A lightfoot looks perfect, +2 dex, +1 Cha.

Specials: Choose 1 of these 4.
Guardian Spirit : Will save you from death, using tripping you, embarrassing you or anything else. Branches or Rocks may intercept, etc.

Powerful : Use Bonus action to up cast spell by 1 level or for advantage attack. 1/prof bonus/rest

+1 Wis: Comfort Cook : takes 1 hr: Meal heal d6+Prof bonus or Brew drink 1hr dur Bless as if full caster 1/long; @11th cast Heroes Feast 1/lg

+1 Int: Beaver Spirit : Carpenter Skill, Swim @ Walk, Hold Breath 10 min, Mend Wood

Clerics of Lorien Irmo. require: Int 15+, Cha 13+; No Weapon use, but illusion & sleep Spells. Irmo is basically the “God” of Bards, Poets, Illusionists and The Hobbits favorite Wizard, Gandalf. Holy Symbol: The Cleric

Manwë Súlimo: LG: LN NG Lord of the Valar; Winds, Clouds, Swift Birds especially the Great Eagles. The throne is on Oiolosse the utmost tower of Taniquetil. When Manwë and Varda are together on the throne they see and hear all. Holy Symbol: Silver Eagle Clerics : need Wis 18+; Int 14+, Speak to eagles, Can take the Wind spells; Perception Skill

Nessa Celebration & Dance, Lady of the Deer. She can outrun Deer. Holy Symbol: deer.
Clerics & Druids: needs Cha 16+; Usually Female; Always prepared charm & @7th Charm Monster. Longstrider 1/rest self. Adv. reactions & Speak with Deer @will. Get Performance Skill free.

Olórin Gandalf the White, Followed by Wizards, Hobbits, Elves, Tricksters & Fire oriented.

They all look nice. Questions :-
Does Powerful reset on a long rest or a short rest?
If I choose Beaver or Comfort Cook, do I gt +1 to the indicated stat?
When do I get the chosen one?

See above for clerical patrons.

My crib notes of /rest means long or short.
You start with the special and you do get the stat bonus if indicated. So potentially an extra Int or Wis.

Thanks.

Despite the urge to Moar Power!!! represented by the Powerful option, I’m going to choose Comfort Cook because it suits the character, (All Hobbits are gourmets).

Good choice, and welcome.

Note I just put in a plausible meeting moment in the main thread-if I jumped the gun I apologize.

As you’re building the character, feel free to be resting between performances at “The Half Pint” and meet & greet the odd party that walked in.

Yay! Welcome Mhaye! We need a hobbit and someone with a lot of 5e experience both!

That’s what I’ll do.

I’m up to 3rd level right now. Next up Wiz 1 then Bard 3.

I’ll do details like spells, equipment and numbers after I’ve done all the levels and crafted a background.

I’m Watching the game thread and the setup thread.

One warning: there are times when I am simply not available. These re Mon, Wed and Fri between mid afternoon (say 3) and about 10pm, and Saturday afternoon and evening until late, as I roleplay online with a longstanding group of friends. This is UK time, so I can be on afterwards, in time for the evening in the Americas.

There may be the occasional hospital appointment, and likely a midweek game Thursday.

Onward!

Male or Female hobbit? Just so I can fix a post in the game thread.

Male.

I’ll use the Mandolin as suggested (along with pan pipes and tom-tom)

Every Middle-earth party should have at least one hobbit. It is known. Welcome, MHaye!

Welcome aboard, @MHaye!

I was unable to find a clear delineation of the Valar’s portfolios (to use a D&D term of art) so I resorted to the Valaquenta.

The valar with wide knowledge appear to me to be Manwe, Varda and Namo (aka Mandos). Namo has the widest breadth of knowledge (he “forgets nothing: and he knows all things that shall be, save only those that lie still in the freedom of Iluvatar” (Sil p28)) but never reveals knowledge without permission from Manwe.

Manwe and Varda together can see and hear all (ibid p26) and seem to be a bettr fit than the smewhat grim Namo for a cheerful Hobbit.

All quotations from the first edition hardback printed 1977.

What do you think?

Did you see what I posted above?

I very much agree that Namo is not a good choice for a Hobbit Bard in my opinion.
I’ll find my Varda notes and edit this post with it.

Varda Elbereth: G: LN N Elves Lady of the Stars; Beauty & Stars; Fighters of the Undead & Astronomers
Holy Symbol: Silver Star Clerics: 16+ Cha, usually Female & Elf-friend speaking Quenya. Undead save at Disadv for Turns.

I must have missed that in my search. Sorry.

I can only meet the requirements for Varda to be my patron right now, so that will be fine by me. (I only have Wis 13, unfortunately).

ETA: It’s a good thing I speak Quenya.

Lorien, Olorin & Nessa remain options though.
Lorien is tough though as no weapons. But hey, don’t even need a Holy Symbol. You are the Holy Symbol.

Olorin is beloved of Hobbits of an adventuring mind. We would give you some bonus with either Fire or a free Sleight of Hand skill.

Nessa makes you good with Deer and gives you a free Performance skill.

You know, this sounds somewhat appropriate. I was going to take Sleight of Hand proficiency anyway when I entered the College of Lore, so I think I’ll follow the precepts of Olorin.

Cool, that should be fun.

The Tooks, Brandybucks, Gamgees, Gardners and Fairbairns of the Towers hold Gandalf in the highest esteem for obvious reasons.

Fairbairns of the Towers are also descended from Samwise through Sam’s eldest daughter Elanor who married Fastred of Greenholm. They moved to the new area of the Shire under the Tower Hills.

As a follower of Olorin, we’ll give you Control Flames as an extra cantrip.
You can also have Pyrotechnics (2nd) as a spell you always have memorized. Doesn’t count against your memorized spells.

You also learn Fireball & Lightning Bolt Wizard spells for free in your Wizard’s Spell Book. But these you have to memorize of course. I’m not sure if you’ll ever be able to cast them or not.
