D & D on the Straight Dope setup thread. (In Middle Earth FA63)

Oh, absolutely.
And please don’t think I’m trying to push you into any role. :o

I’m certain Brin and Gil-Gandel will make excellent outriders / bowmen / pathfinders.
But if the going gets tough, you both do pack a melee punch!

I can’t remember which Hollywood Star was going to turn down a role, but then decided the character’s death scene was so memorable (and prolonged!) that they took the role.
Maybe we should start a thread on characters that die, but appear anyway in the sequel…

D_Odds: Let’s hope they’re smoking cigarettes; that will give me something to aim for.

Scene: An Orc Guardpost. NIGHT.

Bolg: Oi - you there, Grishnâkh?
Grishnâkh: What you want, foul-breath?

Bolg: Be like that, dummy - I don’t ‘ave t’ share.
Grishnâkh: Share what?

Bolg: You know that 'afling we took…well 'e 'ad some pipeweed!
Grishnâkh: Gimme, or I smash you.

Bolg: OK, OK, … 'ere it is.
Grishnâkh: Gotta light?

Bolg: Oh, dat’s good.
Grishnâkh: Aaah.

Sound effect: WHOOSH.

Bolg: Oh, dat’s really good.
Grishnâkh: Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhh!

Sound effect: Body hitting ground.

Bolg: Stop messing about!
Grishnâkh: (I’m not going to be in the sequel, am I?)

Does Gandalf count?

Wimps. Next you’ll be telling me that you fart through Greenwood-silk pajamas.

I’m married, have three boys and own my house. I can send people to jail or impose civil damages in the millions. Then again, I love Tolkien, Star Trek, Sherlock Holmes and Hellboy, while not ever playing the glockenspiel. Don’t know quite where I rank on the Geek Spectrum.

Well you are no stereotypical geek, but I always felt your geek cred is good with us.

I have known very few “True Geeks”. No one living in their parents basement past 30 that collects comic books, wears bad glasses, never dates, role plays and quotes liberally from Star Trek, Star Wars or Monty Python.

I have known people that covered several of those categories, including myself of course.

Jim

I don’t fart. I break wind.

I hope you can only send convicted criminals to jail.
Now I can give essays or tell my class to “SHUT UP!”

It’s slightly tricky, but I think Gandalf the Grey does die, so yes.

I was thinking of Obi-Wan Kenobe, who speaks (if I remember correctly) in a later film.

Hmmm, I live in our attic because my in-laws have the master bedroom, but my wife and I own the house, so I’m not sure where that comes in

Already I’ve had MP and SW references in this thread somewhere.

I guess I pass.

You’re a Wose. You don’t break wind; you break the spirits of the staunchest men who have the displeasure of being anywhere downwind of you.

Where’s the fun in that?

Obi Wan Kenobi speaks in the second and third films (or are they the 5th and 6th, I get confused ;)). He also doesn’t quite die as much as he just…vanishes.

I see you have experienced our Wose special curry - Bangalore Phâl! :smack:

I am sad to report that Gary Gygax passed away at age 69.

Well, that’s what they tell me I’m supposed to do, anyway. Heheheheh.

I am really excited to see how our first battle goes down. I know as a Dwarf my main job is to “hit em again” with my axe, but our battle plan sounds…devistating. I can’t wait to see how it playes out.

It’s great you are enjoying it!

Also Casters like me can only do well behind the protection of Fighters like you.

Given we are just posting individually whenever we have time, I think there has been excellent player co-ordination. (And our DM has coped well with a stream of orders.)

I think that Sleep is a devastating weapon against low-level monsters like orcs, and that our 3rd level Fighters and Pathfinder Archers will simply make mincemeat of the rest.

It all looks suspiciously easy, so I am actually expecting some trickery - perhaps more orcs turn up, or the man from Lossarnach turns out be a traitor.

I was told that all “peanut gallery” remarks should go here. Unfortunately this thread is not located in the pit so it would be against the rules to tease you all for your lunch money.

(actually I am rather fascinated, it’s just a shame that the black -> dark green highlight doesn’t contrast well on a black and white printer)

The last bunch I played with regularly used “plot cards” - a made-up deck with the odd keyword on them, so if the players thought the encounter needed spicing up, they could indeed play something like “Traitor” or “Surprise!” or “Setback”. Sometimes this meant a little retrofitting, but we turned the necessary blind eyes to that.

A chap **with only a black and white printer ** thinks he can tease others?
Us nerdy types are all on laser printers and damn the expense!

bbs2k: careful, you know how some geeks fight back and are really underhanded about it. That was ‘me’ in my school days. The handful of those that would bother geeks, knew not to do so to my friends. One kid was pushed down a flight of stairs and told if he ever bothered my friends, again I would kill him. I came off as just enough of a psychotic little angry Italian guy that he bought it and left us alone. Mostly though I just got along with most people. Actually, you probably can still see some of that kid in my posting habits.

Did you mean color laser? Because when you are more of techie geek these days then a D&D/comic book* geek, you have a networked Color Laser as the primary printer and a dedicated photo printer for the digital camera.

  • BTW: reducing by geek cred: I was never into comic books and I only ever bought about 30-40, most of those where some Marvel collection that Identified most superheroes and villains. These were actually a gaming aid for Champions. I might or might not still have them.

I do have a networked colour Laser as it happens.
I don’t have a photo printer, because there’s no time to take pictures and still master Civilisation 4 Warlords.

That makes sense.

Hey, I played Champions my first two years of college! We had a very good GM, and it was a blast. My PC was a very fast British superhero named Nightspeed who was 'way cool. Or so I thought, at least. Just one more point to bolster my geek cred, huh?

Nice work on the battle and rescue in the game thread, What Exit? Your summary of how it unfolded was actually pretty exciting to read. I could visualize it all.
