D & D on the Straight Dope setup thread. (In Middle Earth FA63)

Hehe read through your thread here, good stuff.

People I GMed quickly quickly found out that folks who bitch about the ‘Guy stumbles in looking for help’ opening, next time might find themselves in the ‘You wake up naked in a prison cell with a headache ,no memeory and 5 other guys you have never seen before’ opening"

I played and ref’d Champions between 1988 and 1991 I think. I am not a comic book guy, so it was interesting for me. I was told my game was exciting. I think it helped that I just had it take place in the (then) current time of downtown Manhattan.

I prefer D&D & I enjoyed my Traveler campaigns. Few rules to get in the way of the game play in Traveler. I tried my hand as everything from Gamma World & Mutants and Magic to Boothill to Space Opera to MERP & ICE. I always go back to D&D, usually in Middle Earth.

Thank you for the compliment on the battle. I have some hope that the game will not only be fun, but be readable to any observers. Similar to some of the collaborative story thread you started or were involved in.

I just want to let most everyone check in, before we move on.

Hee. Almost word for word the last (also online) game I got into, except it was a bedroom in an inn, one of the guys was dead, and there were feet coming up the stairs…

Been there, done that, apologised profusely, gained revenge by the end of the scenario. :stuck_out_tongue:

I ref’d Champions (from 1st edition) and Shadowrun (from 1st edition), using standard universe, and with Champions I tried a campaign where the bad guys had actually won (Dr. Destroyer won, re-programmed Mechanon, and used some villians as mercenaries while other megalomaniacs turned out to be the proverbial “enemy of my enemy…”). Also ref’d DC Universe, Legion of Super Heroes era. Tried MERP, but the Rolemaster system was too complicated even with the simplified MERP rules. Players wanted quicker and easier.

As to what I’ve played…the list stretches on for miles. I think I’ve taken a chance at every superhero RPG. I’ve played Dragonball Z RPG. AD&D, Runemaster, Tunnels & Trolls, Cyperpunk, Traveller, Star Wars RPG, RIFTS, Robotech RPG, Doctor Who RPG, some Pirate RPG…and I apologize to any games I forgotten.

This is making me rethink running superhero RPG here on the board. Hmmm…

Heheheheh. Of course they’d have to be “big, ugly and horny guys” to really get the adventure off to a good start.

Ta.

My group spent 5 years going through all the Dragonlance modules. By the end, we were about 12th level, with magic items to fit.
The DM then mentioned that he still had some adventures we hadn’t needed to do to achieve victoryand would we like to do an ‘After the War’ continuation?
We said yes, of course.
He said our characters would have to be slightly ‘powered down’ to balance things.
We said fine.
Here is the resulting intro:

After preventing the evil God Takhisis from entering and ruling the World of Krynn, you are hailed as heroes by everyone from the Knights of Solamnia to the Kenders.
You are treated to a massive banquet in your honour, with plenty of fine wines, ale and mead.

You wake up hungover, wearing only a loincloth, shackled in a prison wagon being led by Draconians. They laugh as they tell you that you die tomorrow.
The only piece of equipment you have is the lockpick the Scout keeps hideen on his person…

Slightly better than the starting scenario where we were thrown into a world with no plot and no background and just wandered around in the wilderness until we came upon a slaving party. As we were about 5th level each we could have completely waxed them, but when they demanded that we give up and became their slaves we just shrugged our shoulders and said “okay”. Even within the cages and stripped of our goods we could have escaped at any time but we wanted to know what would happen. Nothing did. (That DM didn’t last past that session.)

I need to ask the players.

**Is the game thread moving at a good speed or too slow or too fast? **
I am afraid it might be going too fast for some, but I also don’t want to let too many posts accumulate, unanswered. I am trying to find the right balance. This is much different from any other game I have ref’d.

I think the combat worked well. I like the healthy paranoia the players are exhibiting over it being too easy. It was however a very good battle plan.

Try to imagine the woods as old, tall and light on underbrush. Very good passage for horses and possible for wagons.

I like the pace so far. I like your pattern of allowing us to converse among ourselves and give our desired actions, then responding with periodic long posts of your own, giving outcomes and further narration.

Yes, it’s working fine as far as I can see. Good system for handling the combat.

Ditto. I find myself smiling a lot as I read and write. This is fun!

I think it is a good pace. I will proably start keeping up better as I start figuring out what I am doing more and what I can do other than “whack em with my axe.” Which is a fine thing to do don’t get me wrong, axe whacking is ton o’ fun

I would think as the Dwarf, this impasse of the innately peaceful would be your opportunity to step in and start questioning the orcs. Someone has to start it. We no the young Hobbit is far to busy.

Good idea!

ok, so I don’t want to get ahead of myself with what is possible. I want to make sure that Thoroncir is willing to help with the interigation and that the orcs have been woken up before I start questioning. Should I just submit a list of questions in green now and wait for everything else to work itself out?

I know this game is being run well because I look forward to reading the thread each time I log on. And it’s never got too far ahead…

Given that we have not agreed things face-to-face and have never played as a group before, we are doing extremely well.

There’s nothing wrong in starting with a relatively easy combat. We could have blundered into it and it was also excellent practice.

I’m sorry you had that experience.
My dungeon was run by an experienced DM, who knew we could cope with the guards if we planned our break-out.
It was fun though, fighting wolves in the forest with tree branches.
There was a huge cheer when one of our clerics finally managed to make a Holy Symbol.
(As Joni Mitchell memorably put it “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”)

Things are moving well in the game thread.

I think you can always say in that thread e.g. ‘My character offers to put **these questions ** to the orcs.’ Then characters have something concrete to discuss.

This speed is fine for now. However, I’m on spring break starting this weekend and my posting will be sporadic. In general, if you need to run a battle or something without me, do it.
