D & D on the Straight Dope setup thread. (In Middle Earth FA63)

If at first you don’t succeed…

Crapballs!

Good luck Cat.

Hah! Just posted a wikipedia link to ettercap in the game thread.

Good catch on the backstab, btw. You’re quite right - though the Monster Manual makes the same error that I did, and in its section on “Subduing Dragons” quotes an example fight in which a thief gets a backstab multiplier against a dragon.

I’m sure elves, especially those who hang around in what used to be Mirkwood, are quite well schooled in spiders’ vulnerable spots, but we took it to the cleaners anyway. Now for some orcs!

We’re ready for Shelob now

::shuddering::

Don’t say that. She’s probably still out there somewhere, meaner and hungrier (if not bigger) than ever.

May have been overkill- it looks like the archers could have taken it down on their own. Still, I’d rather overcompensate than undercompensate. Well played!

Oh, she is still out there and perhaps you will get a chance at her, but you are far from being ready for her and her children. She has become far more paranoid and cautious since that certain incident 63 years ago.

I had a feeling you’d say that.

Somebody else gets to play Fly for that one, I think I have used up my quota of annoying spiders.

Hobbits are 1 - 1 against Shelob. That’s a better record than any other race!

No, but I know who you are thinking of, do you recall who Renee’s Great Grandmother is?

I’m not even exactly sure who Renee is; I’ve read LOTR but not carefully in years.

Well she is Arwen’s Daughter, who is Galadriel’s Granddaughter, who made that nice little Vial for Frodo on short notice.

Just remember, your character does not know this.

Of course using the term bauble may not have been the best idea.

Oh, well, that does make sense. “Bauble” just sent me straight off down the other path.

No, Deor has an inkling that Renee is either important or just of interest to Thoroncir, one or the other.

I’d say she’s both.

Thoroncir probably just wants three of her hairs as a keepsake (mixing up references a bit there!)

Well, this is Tolkienesque romantic High Fantasy after all, but if all goes well he’d like much more than that…

So the question becomes, what next, the 11 orcs in this room are dead and the small door barred.

I’m just curious, is anyone trying to map the place so far?
