D & D on the Straight Dope setup thread. (In Middle Earth FA63)

This Swiss valley, which Tolkien hiked with friends in his youth, was the inspiration for Rivendell. Scroll down for some stunning pictures: Lauterbrunnen - Wikipedia

Excellent.

Prepare for the new unseen, unheard, untraceable Mulligan, appearing in a game near you soon.

And prepare for Gil-Gandel to play some beautiful music on the one-string harp. A +3 bow, possibly with +3 arrows, Str bonus, Dex bonus, Elf bonus and firing four times a round… that’s verging on the egregious.

Wait a moment, as of right now it is only 3 shots per round. You just have a big bonus to your initiative. Your first arrow will nearly always fly before the enemy goes. There is a chance of it being further improved to a 4 rof but it is not there yet.

BTW: Just for perspective, how many shots per round do you think Legolas gets?
I’ll give you a hint it makes 3 look like few.

Re: Thoroncir’s confusion as to the first Gilraen’s grave

I was thinking of the LOTR movie. :smack: There’s an extended-edition DVD scene of Aragorn pausing by her grave in Rivendell:

As best I could recall, she grew old and died in Rivendell. What Exit? has pointed out the books have it differently.

Worth clarifying I think, this war is indeed part of the reason that the Elves were looking for help. The other half concerned Glorfindel’s plans in Angmar where he wants to finish the job he started over 1000 years ago. The Dwarves are key though. No people are better fighting in Goblin caves than Heavy Infantry Dwarves.

Despite Bofur’s sales pitch, the ground work for this war was laid out many months ago and Elladan and Elrohir have been on board with helping it since near the beginning. Indeed Elladan had traveled to Minas Tirith with Curunauth to speak to the Queen and King and arrange for coordination with them for the small forces of the North.

Elladan is acting as the Aragorn’s Captain in the North and there will be a good dozen Ranger Veterans. The men of Arnor are on a heightened watch for enemy activities. They just don’t know the exact reason.

Cirdan even sent a small group of Elves to help including an ancient Elven Mage nearly as old as Glorfindel, though she is only a little more skilled than Deor in magic. She is an Elf of the Light. Four warrior-mariners have already crossed over the pass to meet the Eastern forces and the Elven Mage joined a group that is scouting Angmar.

As to Kkósal, that has just begun.

Thingol was indeed said to be “the tallest of all the Children of Ilúvatar” and I believe Galadriel was said to be 6’4" and Celeborn was taller yet.

Glorfindel’s height was never listed but I didn’t perceive Elwe to tower over him. I would think Elu Thingol would not be much over 7’ and I just decided that based on Tolkien describing Glorfindel as tall for the Elves that 6’10" would be about right. Any clues to Elu Thingol’s actual height?

Actually Elendil the Tall was well over 7’ as I recall. I found a note that Elendil was 2.5 rangar or around 7’11". This means I might actually be shorting Glorfindel and Thingol must be over 8’ tall.

Aragorn was 6’6" and the tallest of the Fellowship though Boromir was apparently broader at 6’4".

Should I adjust Glorfindel’s height even taller? He was considered tall among Turgon’s captains. Turgon was the second tallest of the Children of Ilúvatar after Thingol. So he too had to be 8’+.

I’m trying to avoid any NPC posts to the game thread until all the players have a chance to respond to the request for help from Bofur.

I do remember a reference somewhere that put Thingol at about the eight-foot mark. But perhaps the reborn Glorfindel was scaled down a mite so as not to be intimidatingly huge among the Children of a later age. Six foot ten is fairly huge by most standards (in the Harry Potter films, Hagrid is played in long shot by Martin Bayfield, former England rugby international of that height).

Hmmm. With all of these towering characters, maybe there could be a cameo appearance by Yao Ming (7’ 6") in the forthcoming Hobbit movies…

Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends!

Quick call out to anyone following the game. Miron is an NPC for a while and the group could use another brick (front line, well armored fighter type).

If anyone wants to join the game, this is a very good time as we are between adventures.

Yes please,

JOIN US!!!

The more the merrier.

Oh and Elendil’s Heir, I cannot believe you had Thoroncir walk up to Glorfindel and ask what it’s like to be dead and come back again

When would he next have the opportunity to do so, pray? Wouldn’t you want to know the answer?

“as brazen as Beren” is insulting? His Brazenness is renown by most. When he first brazenly presented the Simaril to Thingol his hand that was holding the Holy Gem was in Carcharoth’s gullet. His brazenness finally one the good will of the father of Lúthien Tinúviel.

I think we have a problem of language here.

Perhaps so. “Brazen” is generally used pejoratively, in my experience, although it can also mean “bold.” I think Thoroncir would take the remark about Beren, followed on directly by the one about Tuor, to be insulting coming from someone he just met, and would respond accordingly, for all the reasons stated in my post.

It was meant as bold and normally comparisons to Beren are not looked at as insults. Though it is true that Glorfindel does not think quite as highly of Beren as Tuor, he does think very highly of him all the same.

I am sending out Character updates tonight and tomorrow. Please review and let me know if I missed anything or if you have questions. I’ve put too many hours into it today and I think the text started spinning. So please review and let me know.

We’ll keep the Fourth Adventure thread open until we resolve questions and are ready to march out of Rivendell.

Received the update- thanks!

All the Characters were sent out.

Received OK, thanks.

Got mine.
