D & D on the Straight Dope setup thread. (In Middle Earth FA63)

Bitur son of Bofur has been sent out. Like Gwaelur he uses Axe & War Shield and Xbow. He wears Dwarven Plate Mail though.

Welcome to the game Hoopy Frood.

Welcome to both hoopy and shadow!

I am going to hold off posting an official welcome to Hoopy until I get our shared history straight. I can’t imagine that we don’t at *least *know of each other with our history overlapping so frequently.

Welcome to the newcomers!

Just a warning to all involved that I’m quite swamped as finals approach, so I’ll be limited to posts directly involving gameplay for the time being. I should be back fully in about a week and a half.

Good luck on your finals - I know you’ll ace 'em!

Once Mulligan resolves if she is buying any bullets or stones, I would like to get you to the day of the attack and into probably inside the door.

Sorted. Should be very useful for the two hobbits.

Good luck with the finals, appleciders

Just a reminder: Please try to keep game mechanics to the setup thread.

The general idea is for the adventure threads to read more like an cooperative story and the setup thread to be for longer game questions or really any questions not related to the story itself. Heck, we had a great discourse on pipeweed packaging appropriate for the technology of the time.

As to turn, it is level of turner vs a chart of undead. On a successful turn the undead will flee as fast as they can in numbers of either 1-12 or 7-12 depending on the difference on the chart or at higher levels the turner can destroy undead.

Gilraen has many bonus and can turn at 8th level for double numbers. So she can destroy up to shadows (especially with her bauble) and can turn even a Ring Wraith on a 20 or a lesser wraith (Spectre) on a 10+.

Hraedsig as a Paladin turns at only 3rd level so he could turn a Barrow Wight or minor wraith (Wraith) on a 20 and Shadows on a 13+.

It was made for Arwen by Galadriel (or perhaps for Celebrian I forget now). It was given as a gift to Gilraen by Arwen when she became a Healer of Ëste and thus might actually expect to heal the undead by sending them from this mortal realm. It is similar to Frodo’s vial from Galadriel but a different shape.

Additionally even as a small girl Gilraen was very fascinated by the bauble as she named it and often slept with it. Arwen was always amazed by how well it responded to her second daughter. She could get it to blaze forth like Arwen could only do as an adult.

**The Request: ** Please try to avoid quoting in the game thread, especially large posts. It is not a huge deal but it does decrease readability.

I know that beyond **D_Odds **trying to catch back up, we also have others reading the threads. It also makes searching for specific posts simpler.

Again this is minor, just a reminder to try an avoid quoting when possible.

04-10-2008, 07:58 PM: Me: Renee offers up a small bit of help, “I have a very special bauble that might help. I can get it to glow quite bright. It is a treasure from my mom, who got it from her mom who got it from hers. It is quite old now, but once I get it glowing I can hand it off to someone. It would defeat my cloak and protections, would someone like to carry it?”

appleciders: Aren’t you mixing your English high-fantasy enchantresses here?
04-10-2008, 08:10 PM: Me: Well she is Arwen’s Daughter, who is Galadriel’s Granddaughter, who made that nice little Vial for Frodo on short notice.

Just remember, your character does not know this.

Of course using the term bauble may not have been the best idea.
Searching only on the Game Room for Bauble revealed only one post that was not from our game. So that worked very well.

I just heard Handel’s Messiah tonight, performed by a local Baroque orchestra; it’s one of my holiday favorites. This passage (although obviously not written about him) always makes me think of King Elessar and his first triumphant entry into Minas Tirith after Sauron’s downfall:

*Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in. Who is the King of Glory? Who is this King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle, the Lord of Hosts. He is the King of Glory, the Lord of Hosts. *

Psalm 24:7-10.

The War Shield or Combat shield does double duty. It defends and attack at the same time.

A shield used in combat need to be strong enough to bash an opponent with. The Dwarven War Shield adds a lot of spikes on the shield and the edges of the shield. It is built as a weopon from the beginning.

Since you asked for comments, What Exit?

I like the in-thread tactical map you posted tonight (of our party and the attacking mummies), but if it’s too much trouble to do it that way, the previous method was fine.

What he said.

It was quite nice, but I could read the other just fine. So if it’s a pain to create don’t bother.

I’ll see what I can do to pick up some speed techniques. That was my first try. The worst part is actually the white spaces. I thought I found an alt-key symbol for it but then found that that it varies by browser and PC and sometimes is a box and sometimes a fix space.

Alt-0141
Alt-0160 isn’t fixed size.

I used mostly Extended ASCII Codes: http://www.asciitable.com/

Well, with Christmas up on us, I’m not going to be around much until the New Year.

Have fun.

Try not to get us all killed.

I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Years. We add to the pair Chanukah in my house just to add to the fun and chaos. I grew up a lapsed Roman Catholic and my wife a lapsed Jew.

Happy Holidays to everyone else, I hope you all have a good time.

Same here - safe holidays to everyone! I’m not traveling anywhere, so I’ll still be able to play.

I may or may not have access from the 24th to the 29th. It depends on if I can find a coffeehouse with free wifi.
