Damn Dirty April! (Monthly Mini-Rants)

So I’m sitting here minding my own business when the phone rings. The caller ID comes up as “likely spam” so I press the button to put it on speakerphone just for amusement. Lo and behold it’s my bank, telling me that they had blocked a fraudulent transaction with my debit card at some carpet place and cancelled my debit card, and would I please call them at the provided 877 number.

Instead, I called the bank’s telephone banking line and asked for the fraud department. The fraud department first sent a security code to my cell phone which I had to read back to them. They then informed me that no one from the bank had called me today, that the 877 number was not one that they recognized, and that my debit card was not cancelled and fully valid.

A nasty phishing attempt that I almost fell for, though I probably would have got suspicious if I had actually called that number and they started asking a lot of questions. It’s disturbing that they knew what bank my debit card was associated with. And I almost never use it, so there wouldn’t be a lot of receipts lying around.
