OK - popping in again after watching some TeeVee with the kiddos. Just waiting for Dante to do the set-up.
A quick question, our Almighty Host of Destiny, may Your Name never be besmirched - can we add more color commentary than the last game had (players, that is), or do you wish things to just go hell-bent-for-leather…?

As in, once the set-up is done, can we create a game “character” (kinda more what I was used to on another board)? If that’s not the game, no problem, but I’d just like to know.

That’s just it though - I’m not allowing for posting of role PM’s.

Ya see, I was introduced to this game years ago and was always taught that role claiming was frowned upon and that it was taking the easy way out. I tend to agree. I mean, if you are going to sign up for a game that’s all about deception and deduction and manipulation, then be prepared to play that kind of game. Don’t go into it thinking that you can always save your life with a role claim, or try to get all players to claim as an elaborate strategy. To me, the game is more fun when you can’t claim.

Just my opinion though.

I know what you are saying. And I’m pointing out that you can get over your issue by making sure that the Scum can claim perfectly valid roles. It makes far more sense to nerf claims than to forbid what people can talk about.

You’ve never actually played a game with claiming. You were out of this first game before claiming was an issue. How do you know that having claiming in a game makes it less fun? Claiming allows for a lot more deception and manipulation. And it requires more deduction to figure out who is lying.

And, since you allow claiming without role PMs, there will be claiming in this game. But you’ve made it harder on the Scum, since they will have to make up their fake claim. And that’s fine, if the game is balanced with that in mind.

All I was doing was explaining how the people here deal with your objection. You seem to be stuck on the idea that claiming breaks the game. You’ve apparently never seen the many games where a fake claim actually won the game for Scum.

This is only my second game on Straight Dope, including the one I’m running now.

I have played in games on other sites that had claiming in them, but like I said, it was frowned upon. People rarely claimed and the one time a player claimed by posting his role PM, well that got a lot of the seasoned players upset.

I personally don’t like to claim, but that’s just the way I play. I will try other ways to save myself if I’m really hardcore into the game.

It’s just a game play preference more than anything.

And for the record, I have played in many games where no claiming happened and Scum won and they won fairly easily at times.
