Daredevil on Netflix viewing thread (open spoilers)

Setting aside whether Nobu’s death was intentional or good luck, there’s a huge difference between killing someone who is explicitly trying to kill you in that moment, and setting out to murder someone (even a bad someone) in cold blood, as Matt was trying to do in that episode. At the start of the fight with Nobu, he warned him that he was after Fisk and had no quarrel with him.

I thought it was the gunfire from Fisk and his crew that created the sparks that set Nabu on fire. Not Matt’s actions.

Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, is the big bald dude. He brought together the various organized crime outfits in the city and got them working together for their mutual benefit. His long range goal is to use the money from his criminal activities to buy up damaged real estate in New York and turn it into high-priced condos and fancy stores, earning him a shit load of legitimate money. His new partners in this effort consist of:

The Russian mob, who are led by two brothers. Their interests are in drug deals and human trafficking. They’re very much the lowest gang on the totem pole, basically just thugs.

The Chinese, led by Madame Gao. They provide the heroin being sold by the Russians, but apparently are following their own agenda that’s not fully revealed by the end of the season. There’s strong hints that Madame Gao is going to be an antagonist in Iron Fist.

The Japanese, led by Nobu. These guys are almost certainly the Hand, a ninja clan that’s a recurring Marvel-verse villainous organization. It’s not clear what they bring to the table, but they’re interested in buying up a lot of NYC real estate.

The last member is Leland Owlsley, who’s not technically a mobster, and not nearly as snappy a dresser as he is in the comics. He’s a Wall Street tycoon who uses his financial expertise to launder money for a variety of criminal enterprises.

There’s also Wesley, Fisk’s smarmy lawyer/right-hand man, and best friend.

Lastly, there’s Turk, perennial street thug and narrative butt monkey. He’s a low level enforcer/superhero punching bag.

Thanks for the awesome recap Miller! So there’s no one above Fisk, right? Or in other words, he’s the one whose name everyone refuses to say?

Right.

Damn. I got all excited at the chance to write an explanation when I saw Red’s question. That was better than I would have done.

Just finished the season and I liked it quite a bit.

Was there a significance to the way Karen looked at him when he held out his hand at the end of the show? Was she suspecting he is the Daredevil or was it just a look?

We did find it odd that when Matt got surrounded by the blind folks at the heroin factory, it never showed how he got out of that. It just cut to him in an action scene next time they came back to him.

Since everybody but me seems to be aware of tie-ins to other series, who was the guy with the lats that Stick reported to at the end of episode 7?

Apparently, this guy named Stone, who’s another apprentice of Stick’s. Doesn’t seem to be an apprentice in the show, though.

Matt knows something’s not right about her, and Karen is freaked out at the possibility that he somehow knows she killed Wesley.

I just finished the series yesterday and I loved it. I can’t wait for more. Yeah, it wasn’t perfect, but it kept me interested the entire time.

I realized I could never be a character on the show.

“You really shouldn’t be poking your nose around.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right. Shit’s getting real. I’m moving to California.”

“You’re going to have to kill him.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right. He’s dangerous.”

A couple of things:

1: Karen is a selfish person.
2: It kinda put me off of the MCU. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that Daredevil is in the same universe as a talking raccoon who shoots machine guns.

Yeah, not being Catholic, I would have killed the shit out of Fisk and only stressed about being sure I didn’t leave evidence behind.

And yet Rocket was one of the best developed characters in the movie. And it was a hell of a good movie.

Heck, I am Catholic and I would have killed him until he died from it.

He/it really was. It just seems weird to me. I don’t know.

What really shows the dichotomy is the realization that the horrible situation in Hell’s Kitchen is supposed to be the direct result of an ALIEN FUCKING INVASION. How’s that for cognitive dissonance?

The Marvel Universe contains everything from the ridiculous to the sublime. The Guardians of the Galaxy had a Howard the Duck teaser, for crying out loud. You just wait until the Impossible Man movie comes out.

I can’t believe this thread was only started about 2 or 3 weeks ago because …

I just discovered this show yesterday and it is a total fluke that I discovered the show and this thread just a day apart.

This show is just wonderful. I posted a lot in another show on this board (Cafe Society) and hardly ever posted anything about any other show and I just wish I could somehow post in the other thread to tell people there about this show.

Why? Because both shows are dedicated to incredibly excellent shows. I consider this show to be incredibly excellent and I am very much saddened that it’s against the rules of this forum to post about other shows in a forum about one show. I forget what it’s called - maybe “thread jacking” or something like that?

But there are so many reasons why I think this show is so excellent.

  1. The major factor that I think makes a show excellent is the writing and this show has wonderful writing. It draws me right into the action and makes me wish I was part of the action and could participate with the characters.

  2. The acting and directing - I was going to say the actors and directors. But some actors can be really good in one show but not so good in another. Same goes for directors. But it seems to me that both the actors and director(s) are firing on all 8 pistons (or however many pistons they have) and the result it just wonderful.

The other show I loved has just ended it’s season and I’m just so very happy that I now have 13 episodes of this show I can watch.

OK. Let’s see. So far I have given:

  1. The writing

  2. The actors and director(s)

  3. Number 3 would have to be the show runner(s). Not always the same as the director(s). The people in overall charge really have to share their vision with the director(s) in order for things to work.

I know there are more factors than just these three. But maybe I should wait till I’ve seen more episodes. So far I’ve only watched the first 3.

Oh. This doesn’t apply to all shows. But I first saw Deborah Ann Woll in True Blood and I was smitten. She is one of the most incredibly beautiful women I’ve ever seen. But in this show, she got more of the focus and I got to spend a lot more time studying her acting ability and I was shocked to learn that not only is she incredibly beautiful. But she is also an extremely talented actor.

Oops! I spelled “beautiful” as “beautitful” and got caught by the spell checker. But there is a wonderful scene in the first episode where she removes her shirt and you can see a little side view of one of her breasts. It was just a very tiny bit of her breast but for any fans who love Deborah and get excited by seeing any kind of nudity, it was truly an exciting moment. It was done in very good taste and it made me very happy.

I have a lot more to say. But I don’t want to monopolize this thread.

Let me just say that NETFLIX has hit one out of the park with DAREDEVIL. A real winner. A beautiful show. I’m so very happy to have discovered it.

My complaint about Wilson Fisk is that I never really understood his plan. He needs a massive criminal conspiracy that kills dozens (hundreds?) of people in order to…make more money and do some urban renewal? Isn’t that actually doing things the hard way?

He wanted to rebuild Hell’s Kitchen, but to do that he had to clear away the old buildings… and he wasn’t above killing people who didn’t want to move someplace else to make way for his plan.

He also needed to grease a lot of palms to make his plans come to fruition, hence the various dirty enterprises to raise the needed capital.
