DC Comics' 52... dammit, now I'm psyched.

I am just as glad he put it seperate, since I don’t read the comic threads. I get my stuff once a month, after you guys have spent weeks discussing it.

Don’t think it will be Ollie that gets any powers. He is going to be the mayor of Star City. Who doesn’t comment on the vigilante Green Arrow running around his city. :dubious:

It’ll be interesting to find out if anyone manages to see past the tiny pair of glasses that Ollie’s Van Dyke uses as a disguise.

Will Jack Bauer be making an appearance?

Considering the typical comic book reader I think Kim Bauer might be a better bet.

Aren’t these polar opposites?

There’s a great fight: Jack Bauer v. Batman. The two always-prepared, pretty much unbeatable, unbreakable heroes.

(Although I think Deathstroke could beat them both, honestly.)

I was going to say Robin resurrecting his father, but I don’t think Robin was ever in the JLA, was he? Plus, referring to his father as an “old friend” doesn’t fit well, unless they are purposely being misleading.

Jack Bauer and Batman v. Deathstroke and Catman. Who wins? The fans.

One thing…It seems to me that Wizard has a history of posting red herrings in their lists of upcoming events. I have to wonder just how much of this list is real?

Indeed. I’ll take two.

There’s red herrings and then there’s the creators changing their minds before the thing sees publication.

Which is certainly fair. I’m not going to hold them to any item on this thing (besides the vague promises of quality).

Late-night thoughts about the Question, one of my favorite characters:

I dig the fact that the Question is now an “urban shaman” who was able to commune with Metropolis itself in the Veitch/Edwards miniseries (sorta like a non-powered cross between Jack Hawksmoor and The Doctor from Authority). I also don’t mind the fact that he kills people – I always thought he should be one of the “heroes” who is okay with killing people who deserve it. I now find it interesting that he went to Metropolis to horn in on Superman’s turf (in that miniseries), and will now be going to Gotham City while Batman isn’t home (in 52). Anything’s better than Hub City, I guess.

I think he works best as a multifaceted character, ironic because he has no face at all: a combination of obsessive-compulsive detective (the obvious Batman influence), conspiracy theorist (JLU portrayal/Fox Mulder influence), muckraking journalist (something Clark Kent never seemed to live up to the potential of), and creepy, violent, street-fighting vigilante (Rorschach influence), but someone who scares evil corporate suits as much as he freaks out street criminals. Hell, throw in the “urban shaman” stuff too, why not? Needless to say, I’m a Question fan mostly for the untapped potential and “blank slate” quality of the character (heh, blank, just like his face). He is so cool visually that a good writer can use him for just about anything, and I feel like the JLU writers have created the best niche for him so far.

I should mention that the “conspiracy theorist” thing works extra-well because:

  1. Question and Blue Beetle were both Charlton characters created by Steve Ditko between 1966 and '67.
  2. They teamed up in old Charlton comics as well as DC’s Blue Beetle #5-7 (1986-ish), and provided the inspirations for Rorschach and Nite Owl from Watchmen, by Moore and Gibbons (also 1986-ish).
  3. Blue Beetle stumbled upon a vast conspiracy against the heroes in Countdown To Infinite Crisis (early 2005).
  4. Rorschach stumbled upon a vast conspiracy against the heroes in Watchmen (1986).
  5. Question stumbled upon a vast conspiracy against the heroes in the JLU cartoon (early 2005).
  6. I’m hoping that in 52, some of these writers (Rucka or Giffen?) explore these “coincidences,” and that Booster Gold, another key character in 52 and Blue Beetle’s best friend, has something to do with it as well.

Elongated Man and Zatanna as a pairing almost seems too obvious to me: both JLA members, and there aren’t oo many female members around from that era.

Quite a drop from Constantine, though.

The *Comedian * stumbled upon a vast conspiracy in WATCHMEN. Rorschach came along later, narrow-mindedly followed a very small piece of the puzzle and jumped to the wrong conclusion, which Ozymandias deliberately validated by faking his own assassination. Only when Nite Owl intervened did Rorschach get on the right track and discover the conspiracy was much bigger than he imagined.

First Among Daves. Shoot, it’s an even bigger drop from The Phantom Stranger.

Eel O’Brien

Technically you’re correct, but most people will remember the Comedian’s death at the beginning as the plot point necessary to kick off Rorschach’s investigation, and Rorschach is the character we follow through those early chapters.

Now that would be amusing.

Using the list BBVL provided, and paring out the irrelevant items. 52 Spoilers update, based on Week #1-6, plus cover previews available at dccomics.com for upcoming issues.

1. Luthor’s JLA: With the JLA disbanded, the bald baddie forms his own Justice League, comprised of entirely new characters plus one familiar face.

Booster still looks good as the familiar face, and they’ve revealed that the new JLA debuts in Week 9.

2. Wholesale Destruction: An entire country within the DC Universe will be leveled by a known power player, killing every man, woman and child within.

Too soon to tell. Khandaq could be on the chopping block. There’s also another spoiler about someone becoming head of a country below - it could be that one that bites it.

3. Batwoman Begins: A new female crimefighter takes to the streets of Gotham, but who’s behind the mask? Here’s a hint: It’s not who you think.

This one’s been spoiled to death. Kathy Kane. Week 11.

5 Star Wars - A new villian will be introduced in the outer reaches of space. Early word has this new tyrant giving Darkseid a run for his money.

I find the mention of Darkseid interesting in this context. Week 9’s cover has Animal Man, Adam Strange, and Starfire menaced by longtime Forever People villain, Devilance.

8. Weird Science - A Shadowy figure is abducting big brains like T.O. Morrow, Will Magnus and Dr. Sivana with an eye toward altering the world of technology.

Magnus and Morrow are still unabducted, last I checked. Wonder who the villain is?

12. Girls Gone Wild - Down-on-her-luck Montoya will see her bed become a revolving door of lovers – one of whom will make her mark on the DCU before all is said and done.

See note for Batwoman.

12. Man becomes Superman - A DC hero known for getting the job done without metahuman powers will get their abilities augmented in a major way.

Combines with other spoiler about Supernova, I suspect. Supernova debuts in Week 10.

18. Ralph Dibny: The Next Step - Nobody in the DCU has suffered more in the past two years than Elongated Man, but in 52, Ralph Dibny tries to move on in way that will shock you.

Could mean his suicide attempt. Could be something else.

23. Wedding Bells - One of the DCU’s most eligable bachelors finally meets the super-woman who can tame him enough to settle down.

Black Adam. See Week 12, Week 16.

25. Final Farewell - Some members of the team Donna Troy took into space during Infinite Crisis won’t be back by the first issues of 52, and some won’t be coming back at all.

Now we know a little more.

26. Wind of Change - A new Red Tornado unlike anything that’s come before will ride the eye of the storm into 52 and possible beyond.

We’ve seen a costume for the new guy, in the pages of Infinite Crisis. That’s all. Though I’d be shocked if it didn’t tie in to the scientist plot.

28. Fortune & Glory - One character’s long-fought quest for respect comes to an end when they become the leader of their own country.

Now this is just downright odd.

32. From Beyond the Grave - Having seen Superman, Green Arrow and now Hal Jordan return from the dead, a fomer Justice League member attempts to resurrect an old friend.

The answer is Sue Dibny, as to the resurectee. Week 13.

33. Monster Mash - Lex Luthor changes the face of humanity forever through a series of experiments on Monster Island.

This probably relates to his synthetic metagene.

37. The Main Man? - Is Lobo going back to basics? We’ve heard whispers, but it’s too soon to say…

Week 17.

40. Changing the Future - Booster Gold and sidekick Skeets will attempt to use their knowledge of the past from the future to prevent major disasters before they happen. Will they succeed, or destroy the timestream in the process?

Lots of hints in Week 6 about this.

41. JLA=S.E.X. - Two former Justice Leaguers you would NOT expect will bump uglies by year’s end. Awk-ward!

Booster and Fire, I’m thinking.

44. Not that there’s anything wrong with that - A new gay character make their first appearance in 52, before moving on to their own ongoing series.

Batwoman.

47. Look! Up in the Sky! - A mysterious and powerful new character named Supernova will make his debut in Metropolis. But is this actually a famillar face with a new look?

I bet it is.

49. Powerless - One of DC’s biggest icons spends the years as a civilian, unable to prevent what they once would have handed with ease.

Superman, of course.

50. Don’t get too attached - One of the six leads of 52 won’t see the end of the year. Who’ll bite the dust?

I hope I’m wrong, but Week 16 doesn’t look good for Booster.

I’m thinkin Brainiac.

I’m thinkin Fire & Guy Gardner. After the last Giffen Special, they seemed close.

Don’t really keep up with DCU continuity, but could it be Black Manta?
